Linguistics

I'm probably being dense on this point, but isn't it possible that any phone call was made on an unknown's cell phone? Then you wouldn't have the records because they wouldn't know who was on either end.

Or am I missing something about this? I feel like the only remedial student in here! The thing is, trying to find info in other threads here is impossible. So much going on and so many comments on it all!

Anyway, what about the phone scenario?

No, you're not dense, you're quite right. We don't know who this person was, so until we do, we can't check their mobile phone records (assuming these records still exist now). Of course, there would be the other end as well, which may be a landline rather than a mobile phone, and if so, might be traceable.

This is the phone scenario:

Just to add to that, tapu, when you consider the linguistics of the RN, you should also consider the possibility that the 'experts' have been confused about it because:

1. It was not intended to be read by PR, but heard over the telephone by JR.
2. It was not written down by the author of the words.
3. There may have been more than one author of the words (two people/man & woman in tandem), thus the alteration in tone.
4. The handwriting could have been either male or female, but the reason for it appearing to be 'disguised' is that it was taken down hastily from oral dictation and also there could have been one or more words mis-heard (country/company).

When we find the motive, we might be able to narrow it down, assuming the person(s) is/are actually on that list.

I think the RN is the best clue to what motivated it (not, perhaps, to what actually occurred).

HOTYH feels it's primarily cultural (hated what they stood for).

I think it's primarily about the money (someone felt cheated).

RDI thinks it's designed to mislead (cover up).

I agree, the RN is the best clue. And yes, primarily cultural might have been the justification that the perp used. A rationalization for murder. Really, though, the motive probably is more base than that. Pedophelia is possible because nobody really is going to sexually assault a child that isn't a pedophile. If an intruder did it, then they went to a lot of trouble and had an elaborate plan. They escaped a lot of investigation. If a SFF did it, then it probably wasn't for money because 118K hardly covers the travel expenses.

So the motive was presented as money, but that motive probably was fake because nobody would risk leaving their handwriting unless they were holding JBR for the ransom. If something went wrong with a kidnap for ransom and they killed JBR to prevent her from identifying them, they then would've taken back the ransom note, for fear that their handwriting would be subject to comparison.

Instead, they left the note without fear of leaving their own handwriting. To me this suggests an author that knew he'd be far away and not subject to comparison. They left the note knowing they wouldn't be getting 118K because JBR was murdered. This suggests an author who wanted the parents & LE to read the note even though JBR was in the basement already. Then the only effect the note has is to cause a delay if JR chooses to comply with it and not call police. That means the author was afraid of the cops and was using the ransom note to delay JR's action, get him focused on the bank. The note also has the effect of causing PR/JR to have false hope--to believe for a time that JBR was alive but being held for ransom. Another effect would've been to interrupt the house search for JBR that was going on. Why continue the search of the house when JBR is with kidnappers? This probably caused an hours-long delay in finding JBR.

I've got an insy-winsy baby of a theory. Something like this: a person from Boulder or nearabouts, perhaps had some money invested (sold their rights in an invention or a business, in return for shares in another company) and they ended up with worthless paper. (It happened quite a bit around here for a while. Companies looked good on paper and then went belly-up, or when they were discovered to have overstated the value of assets, $10 shares became 10c shares.)

Anyhow it was 'all they had' so eventhough it seems small potatoes to us, they were very keen to get it back. The company I envisage is probably not AG, but something to do with LM, perhaps even an acquisition that was 'asset stripped'. So they see JR in the newspaper with $1B sales and focus all their hatred on him as an 'employee' of LM and someone rolling in money.

They 'engage' a couple (or 3?) people (family/acquaintances) to pull a little scam. These people let themselves into the Rs house while they are out and wait inside till everyone is alseep. Then they creep upstairs and capture the smallest kid, that cute little 6yo. (Perhaps one of the people was known to her so there's a possibility she was 'lured' downstairs -- I keep thinking of a Santa Suit). They take her downstairs and hide her (tied and gagged and wrapped in the blanket) in the wine cellar or crawlspace. ***** (see below) They leave (via a door) and get into their car/van and wait till nearly morning then call JR on the phone (via their mobile) and read out the RN. They then keep tabs on JR while he gets the dough and goes back home. When he gets home, they call again and instruct him where to leave the dough. They follow him there and back home and make sure no-one (FBI, cops) is watching, (maybe leave one or two watching the dough), call the 'boss' to make the pick-up. When this is done money safely in hand, they call the Rs and let them know where they can find JBR (in the basement/crawlspace).

They just have to make sure they don't leave fingerprints, so all are wearing gloves and coveralls. It's a sweet plan and once out of the house, it's risk free. One makes sure he knows where JR is at all times the others watch the money to ensure it's not a trap. All can escape if it turns out he has called the cops.

**** This is where the plan went wrong.

One person was left with her. It was a bad choice. When the other(s) go downstairs to find out what's keeping him. OMG!!! He's killed her!! And he's gone!! The accomplice cleans her up, pulls up her pants, drags her into the winecellar and gets the hell outa there. So much in shock he forgets the RN lying on the stairs where he was reading it, forgets the flashlight. Scarpers home as quickly as he can.

Been on both camps now and both are sometimes rude and sarcastic&mocking when it's about disagreeing:) but after all it's good that we're all here,or? And we definitely care more than officials do,so it seems...unfortunately. Imagine that the BPD or the DA would spend so much time investigating like we do!

Couldn't have said it better.

While I believe its SFF, and you in company-related revenge, we are both willing to be wrong if it means justice, right?

Anyway, to adapt your style to my theory, it would sound a lot different:

This one powerful guy has grown to hate the capitalist way of life not just a little but a lot. He was raised hating Americans. He especially hates rich children showing themselves off and could even hold them responsible and not the parents. An ideological mission, serial killer or Kaczynski-style, to remove unwanted people from the earth.

He's a crazy sociopath and is used to sadistical affairs. He gets everything he wants and always has. Whats left? Little kid fantasies? As Smit said, a pedophile's dream, right? He's kidnapped before, killed before, beheaded before. And denied people proper burial before.

Nobody misses him on Christmas night as he's neither an American family man nor a Christian. But he does get everything he wants and a small American girl is going to be one of them. Part revenge, part sadistic fantasy, part child fantasy.

He plans for months, travels for days, and his paid accomplices have already staked out the house communications and all. The accomplices THOUGHT it was to be a kidnapping because he spent the WHOLE AFTERNOON writing the RN and it says so long as JR plays along the girl is returned.

Instead of the ransom kidnapping, the sadistic fantasy plays out complete with bizarre sexual assault, strangulation and headbash. What are the accomplices going to do? Come forward? I dont' think so.

A massive narcissist is probably understatement. He's got it all worked out that this and everything else he does is OK and doesn't care if he strikes fear into his close associates. Probably easily recognized as a megalomaniac.

Take a look at the photo of JB's bed from that day. NO blanket was pulled off that bed. LE discussed this very thing with Patsy, who reluctantly admitted that the bed did seem to have been made without a blanket and that no blanket could have been pulled off the bed and have the foot portion remain so neatly made. No one carried her from her bed in that blanket. It was pulled out of the basement dryer, where only her parents and LHP knew it was.

Exactly! I am in complete agreement. Also in that photo at the foot of the bed, is the Christmas sweater that PR lent to LHP's daughter, sorry can't remember her name. PR had lent it to her for the Christmas party on the 23rd, the last day that LHP had changed JBR's bedding and washed it in the basement. For that reason, I believe that the blanket was in the dryer and taken out to cover JBR in the wine cellar.

Ok, lets look at it.

That 'monster thing' was it the pillow? Is it just me or does that not match the sheet? Wouldn't you use the matching pillow case?
Why is there no top sheet either?

Just the bottom sheet and the bedspread.

Please someone correct me if I am wrong, but I enlarged the pic and the sheet and pillow case appear to be Beauty and the Beast. On the pillow is the beast, at least the side thats showing. I had to turn my laptop sideways to make the beast out. He has on a blue jacket trimmed in gold or yellow. From what I could make out on the sheet I think he is on that too. Not sure if Beauty is on the set or not. As for the top sheet, I can only speak from experience that when my son's were small I didn't use a top sheet either. For some reason they didn't like a top or flat sheet. I think it was because a flat sheet is tucked in at the bottom of the bed and they didn't like that on their toes. Too tight fitting. Hubby feels the same way, always kicking the tucked part of the sheet out.

My kids, too, slept with only a loose sheet (summer) or a blanket (winter) on top. The way the bed is there indicates to me that there probably was a blanket on top and that it went with JB.

(btw, I doubt they sell Beast without Beauty :) )

Hey! You guys are sucking me in! Seems like all the JBR threads become general. Are there any other verbal or written aspects to the case? 911 calls, for example?

Well, there you go, I thought the sheet was Mother Goose!!

Now how could you mix your Mother G with the B & da B?? Ya couldn't sleep.

I couldn't imagine making a bed with just a top sheet and a bedspread, eventhough I'm pretty slack about bed making these days. Usually you'd have a top sheet if you have a blanket, but not if you have a duvet/doona with a cover on it.

While I used both top and bottom sheet for my kids, my grandkids use only a bottom sheet and blanket.
That "monster" thing is the beast from Beauty & the Beast. It does match the sheet.

LOL! Thanks for helping me to get it straight. I just took another look and you are correct. The sheet is Mother Goose. That is not the pic that I was looking at though. The pic I used was from further away. I am just sitting here giggling at my mistake, but feeling like a fool. Sorry all. The Pillow sham is the Beast though (I think) and I can't make out if Beauty is on it with him. Someone help me with this, please! Am I correct about the sham? I'm doubting my own eyes now, although I did enlarge & rotate to see the face & chest of the beast. And you are right.....how could she sleep with her head on the Beast???? That is, if it is. If not, then I need to make an eye appointment.

The pillow is definitely the Beast. I thought the sheets were too, because I think the teacups are part of the Beauty & the Beast characters. But that being said, even if they do not match, I can envision Patsy (or any busy mom) changing the bottom sheet if that it all that was wet, and leaving the unsoiled pillow case alone. Patsy was accustomed to having LHP make up JB's bed with fresh sheets anyway, and Patsy was expecting to have LHP come after they left for their trip anyway. I'm sure Patsy would have left the beds unmade and had LHP change the sheets.
BTW, when you have a kid that wets the bed chronically, you'd tend to use the minimum amount if bedding. A bottom sheet, pillowcase and washable blanket would be all I'd put on over a waterproof mattress pad.

Ok, while we are on this subject, there's something else I want you to look at.

I'm a bit hesitant, cause I know how RDI will interpret about this.......LOL

However, if you look at the 'close up' of the bed again, can you see a 'tide mark'?

Ok DD quick research and you are correct! The 'goose' is actually Fifi Feather Duster. Don't know what the teacups are about. Anyway, it is a set, so thank goodness, I can now rest easy LOL.

Hey! You guys are sucking me in! Seems like all the JBR threads become general. Are there any other verbal or written aspects to the case? 911 calls, for example?

Yep, the other thread was hijacked by the repetitive and unsubstantial claims of soiled underwear and now this one by cartoon bedding. And how it all dovetails with a brutal child murder. Heck we all know how many filicides were motivated by dirty underwear and victims wrapped in their own blanket.

I guess its a new rule I've never heard of before: only people who already know whats in the dryer are allowed to open the door and take stuff out. Although I'm still having a hard time understanding what is so hard about opening a dryer door and taking something out.

Anyway I have a couple of big exemplars but I'm waiting for some better criteria before going thru them. Is repetition and legal terms considered a linguistic match? What about grammatical errors? Does the ransom note have any? What about unique sentence structure patterns? Are there any of those in the ransom note? If the exemplars have the word victory in them a lot, does that mean anything?
