Some interesting data about speed and altitude in this report,

Lion Air crash: Indonesia to inspect Boeing 737-Max 8 planes - Jet inspections ordered after crash

The two charts presented in the linked story show a loss of altitude with a corresponding increase in speed at/around the 2 minute mark. I am definitely not an aircraft expert, but as they say in Kentucky. . . "that ain't right."

The Hudson landing was amazing but I think he was flying lower and slower as he'd just taken off, would that make a difference perhaps? Mind you, this one hadn't been in the air too long either. Going back to MH370 I've often wondered if that somehow landed on it's belly and slowly sunk, hence lack of debris.

I've watched a lot on Sully's landing because that was in my back yard so to speak. Yes, he was in control of the plane the whole time even though the engines went out. He had landed a plane like that in the military, had all sorts of training.

Hello fellow New Yorker.

I dont live there anymore but have fond memories of walking the east blocks of Brooklyn to the piers to look across the Hudson at the Manhattan skyline. Which btw is not the same look unfortunately with the missing towers.

Yeah, Sully's miraculous landing is etched in my mind as one of the most miraculous "saves" in aviation history. A truly remarkable safe landing and to get everyone on boats before they succumbed to the icy cold water. He had to avoid bridges and had to do a perfect belly flop so that the nose didnt hit first. When the nose hits first in water then a plane is likely to dig in and cartwheel or break apart into lots of pieces.

It was an amazing happy ending because of Sullys flying skills. Such a cool cucumber in the middle of a disaster. He was so "matter of fact" about it afterwards you could tell he knows how to keep his cool in a disaster. I suspect many pilots panic in disasters and cannot function even with basics.

Brings to memory when Kennedy Jr. plane went down. I think he may have panicked when he realized he could not see the ground in the dark and haze and I think he panicked and got disoriented leading up to the accident.

Do any airlines in the US use this type of plane?

Lots.

Very advanced aircraft with almost no problems reported. This looks like a problem that was botched by the mechanics and/or management pencil whipping the paperwork.

In other words, this plane has a lot of self diagnostic abilities... if it told them the problem was in the air speed "system", simply changing out the air speed measuring device would not have necessarily fixed it.

There is a TV show that shows airline disasters; very eye opening.

Very sad this plane crashed. I'm wondering what we can apply about debris to the Malaysian flight that hasn't been found yet. Why has no one found the amount of debris that this flight had? That flight supposedly dropped out of the sky too.

This flight was only in the air for 13 minutes. They knew exactly where to look and so they found the wreckage quickly. Especially if there were actually witnesses.

They don't have the slightest clue where MH370 went down so it's a totally different story when looking for that plane.

I am worried and wondering where Caariis is. He always had the vest scoop on airplane issues.

Has anyone heard from him! This is something he would be posting on

I hope he is ok he has always been very kind to me. I wish Emirates1957 was here too to get her opinion as she is very knowledgable about aircraft and works in the industry.

I'm from North Jersey. Used to hang in NYC in 1983-1984. Soon as I could drive, I went there in my 69 Mustang or my 440LTD Kawasaki.

You're not kidding pilots panic. You really have to watch some of those airline disaster shows. There were a few disasters that pretty much changed the way pilots interacted. Before they each had a job but didn't know how to communicate to come together to save a plane. Wish I could recall the name of the crashes but it's too early. Scary.

You're so right.

(O/T, I think many of you guys might enjoy the new show “Manifest”, 5 episodes so far I think. It’s about plane that disappears for 5 years— fiction:

Manifest: NBC Series Creator Has a Six Season Plan - canceled TV shows - TV Series Finale )

I haven't seen an episode but removed it from my DVR after horrible reviews by people that watch the same shows as me at another board I go to.

I was interested in it due to MH370 but it doesn't sound like anything we'd like. Cross between touched by an angel and Lost from what I hear

They have had problems with this model. They were actually grounded once for engine problems.

Renton, Washington-based Boeing Airplanes grounded all 737MAX flights indefinitely due to engine quality concerns.

The airline said in a statement, “Out of an abundance of caution, we decided to temporarily suspend MAX flights. The step is consistent with our priority focus on safety for all who use and fly our products.

The grounding is said to be focusing on the CFM Leap-1B engines outfitted on all operational 737MAX aircraft built so far.

This is a massive speed bump to the otherwise smooth and quick development program of Boeing’s newest single-aisle airliner, the 737MAX.

Jamie Jewell, a CFM spokeswoman, told CNN that last week’s inspections found “some anomalies in the process” of manufacturing disks for the CFM Leap turbine. She also noted that there were no previous problems with the engine in over 2,000 hours of testing the aircraft over the last 15 months.

But they have been talking about information differences between pilot copilot instruments

Indonesian investigators have found the flight data recorder from Lion Air Flight JT610, a discovery that should help explain why the new Boeing 737 crashed Monday, killing all 189 people on board.

CNN Indonesia showed images of divers bringing the device, commonly known as a "black box," on board one of the rescue ships in the sea close to Jakarta Thursday, four days after the Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet disappeared off radar during a routine short-haul flight.
The cockpit voice recorder (CVR), which records audio from the cockpit, is yet to be found, but is believed to be located on the seabed, some 35 meters (114 feet) deep.
National Transportation Safety Commission (KNKT) Deputy Director Haryo Satmiko told CNN that it will take two to three weeks to read the data from flight data recorder, and a further two to three months to analyze it.

Another link on the discovery of one of the black boxes.

'Haryo Satmiko, deputy chief of the national transport safety panel, told Reuters earlier an underwater drone had detected an object suspected to be part of the fuselage in waters about 30 meters (98 feet) deep not far from the site where the aircraft lost contact.'

'Strong currents have hampered efforts to find the fuselage of the plane, with efforts complicated by the presence of energy pipelines in the area.'

Yes I miss him too, especially on a thread like this. Hope he's alright!

Still following.

So glad they found the black box. This will give them the technical readings on instrumentation.

Once they find the cockpit voice recorder (and they will find it), this will tell them what the pilots said and did to try to correct the problem(s).

Most former investigators commenting on this flight are perplexed with what could have happened. Several things add up to them but many other do not. Why did the plane not start the turn back? Why was it not said to be an emergency? What did the mechanics actually check or fix after the previous flight problems? Why the erratic speed and altitude? Engines only? Engines and speed indicator at the same time?

It’s good to hear that one of the black boxes has been recovered. The flight data recorder was buried in debris on the sea floor had to be dug out. I hope the other one is found soon. I read somewhere that the pilot panicked. I imagine many of them would if they knew a crash was inevitable and they had seconds left to live.

This short video shows some of the plane wreckage on the sea bed.

I've been put on time out before twice I think.

I suspect that the first news we get re the black boxes will be from America via the plane manufacturer as it will be a joint investigation, should get a premimry report with in 2-3 weeks after they have downloaded the data from the recorders. It doesn't take long,
