Los Angeles schools closed due to threat

LA Mayor: "....So we will be here and continue to be here. We have also activated the city's Emergency Operations Center, at Level I, which is our lowest level, but constant staffing, to make sure we can follow this, continue to share any intelligence, work with our Federal LEOs, and do whatever the School District asks of us. My #1 priority is keeping this city safe, and I will continue to do that. No matter who reaches out to us? We have an incredibly well trained police force. And one last thing I would say to the people of LA: whether this pans out as something that could have happened or not; and we might not ever be able to conclude that, definitively. I do not want people to say, because sometimes things don't result in a shooting , or don't result in a foiled plot, to not speak up, and to not speak out. We need to continue to have 'If you see something, say something.' Visit iWatchLA.com and learn how you can be more vigilant. As we continue to live our lives here in the city of Los Angeles. And values that we hold, of freedom, of our liberty, we want to make sure, also, that we are safe.

Chief Charlie Beck:
"I would say this to people that are critical. It is very easy, in hindsight, to criticize a decision based on results that the decider could never have known. It is also very easy to criticize a decision when you have no responsibility for the outcome of that decision."

Honestly, I don't even consider these things "pranks" or "hoaxes." A prank is leaving a rubber snake in your sister's bed. A bomb-less bomb threat is a still a terrorist threat.

I don't know why I still get surprised when folks trip out about an "overreaction," when things like San Bernadino happen and then it's all "why didn't they prevent this?" Again, I'd rather err on the side of caution and be inconvenienced than burying my child. Imagine if something had happened in both New York and LA today, and only LA closed down...

whatever

I heard one of the talking heads earlier mentioning that Farook had inspected schools and had images of some of them on his phone. He suggested that even though it wasn't LA schools, they still would need to take that into consideration. We still don't know the extent of their plans and if anyone else is connected so I can understand the precautions they are taking.

Can you imagine the Lawsuits if they did not heed a warning and something happened? Not demeaning the loss of life that could happen but can any State afford in any manner to ignore a warning? Given our current situation. It's a new normal that's so dang abnormal. Stupid asshats ! as to whomever is behind this!

Chief Charlie Beck:
"The school district safeguards three quarters of a million lives every day. When they make a decision, they have to take into the account the safety of the children of Los Angeles. I think it's irresponsible, based on facts yet to be determined, to criticize that decision at this point. All of us make tough choices. All of us have the same goal in mind. We want to keep our kids safe. These are tough times. These communities, our communities, Southern California, has been through a lot in the recent weeks. Can we risk putting our children through the same?"

LAC Sheriff: "...A lot of work is being done to be able to run this to ground. And we're working together to ensure that the 700,000 young people who go to LA Unified are safe. And that we continue to move forward with that common goal in mind..."

All I can say about NY is that DeBlasio had better hope that nothing happens there today. I don't like how he says that LA overreacted. I think they UNDER reacted.

NY deemed it was a hoax in part because the person in the email didn't capitalize "Allah"
Really?

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2015/12/15/new-york-schools-terror-threat/#.VnBdEmNAqpU.twitter

I think it was inappropriate for DeBlasio to even comment on how L.A. responded. He should talk about how N.Y. responded, what steps they were taking and leave the decisions in L.A. to L.A.

I also have to wonder what people who truly want to harm us think about N.Y. NOT closing down schools in the face of a threat that another school district considered credible.

Abslolutely and given what Cali has just endured.

To me, they deemed it credible, and it is better to be safe than sorry.
And if they don't find anything after searching all the schools, then that is Great.
But if they did find something,or will find something, they may have saved many lives.
IMOO.

Again, a balance yet be found. This kind of climate brings out the crazies of every flavor, it just does. I wrote in the Paris attack thread of this- of working 9/11 and afterwards at an NGO that was targeted with an anthrax threat, of having to fly out of Washington DC a week after 9/11 and witnessing an airport taken over by bomb sniffing dogs and the US Army, fully armed, of staying at a hotel that was evacuated for a bomb scare.

The crazy in those days was palatable, and it fed on fear. The more fear the more crazies felt encouraged to be crazy.

School kids need to be protected, but the best way of doing that IMO is for the adults around them and responsible for them to take a deep breath and do rational risk assessment before upping the fear ante.

Excellent point you raise. I had forgotten about the school images found.

LA School Chief of Police: LAPD has taken the lead as a result of threat, as is normal protocol. I assure you, as the chief of police of this school district, that while our campuses are having a walk-through as we speak, that none of our schools will be reopened until not only I feel that we have been given the information through those folks that are out there in the field right now checking each location; but the information I will receive based on LAPD's continued investigation. Based on the collaboration and communication between Sheriff MacDonald, Chief Beck, and our federal partners. And then finally the briefing In concurrence with the Superintendent and the Board of Education. At that time is when we will make a decision to when we will open up our schools. And we will not do that until we are completely satisfied that we have taken every measure possible to ensure the safety of our students. Thank you."

OK Let's see both e mails....I'm hearing that they both were routed thru Ger, but it is suspected that the writer is in this country. One said something about allah (with no capital A which a jihadi wouldn't do....but then one said something about being a high school senior who is avenging being bullied. What the Aitch? Was it some snotty kid ? They don't think that the NY e mail was from a New Yorker, because of the way it was worded and did not refer to NY schools as "PS" JMO

I haven't followed much about the San Bernardino case in recent days, but wasn't it suggested that the shooters were intending attacks at other locations? They had tons of ammunition, bomb-making materials, etc. Who knows? Maybe they were considering shootings and/or explosives in school buildings. :moo:

Mr. Zimmer - President, Board of Education (I can't see his 1st name :blushing: ?Dave?)

"... On behalf of the entire Board, the entire Board is gathered here in solidarity with this decision and in support of everyone who is working and has been working through the night to keep our children, to keep our schools safe so they can return to be the anchors of our community".

Me too, and I haven't forgotten about the movie theatre so I'm sure they haven't either. I think the district is making the right decision.

Did Farook take photos of NYC city schools too? I thought the two "threats" came from the same source?

Zimmer:
"...I want to say again, to the leadership of our community, our labor partners, who have stepped up on every way this morning. Our business community, we will need your patience. We will need your understanding. Not only for our schools and our teachers, but most especially for our families. More than being employees today, more than any other role, our parents and guardians need to be parents and guardians...."
