Central pastor holds service hours after arrest on violating governor's stay-at-home order

The pastor of Life Tabernacle Church in Central went ahead with an evening religious service Tuesday night just hours after city police cited him over allegations he violated a state order to limit crowd sizes during an outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

"Yes, we're gonna have service," he added, "and if I am arrested, the second man in charge will step in. If he is arrested, the third man in charge will step in. If he is arrested, the thousands of people who are members of this congregation are gonna step in, but you can't take us all."
I wish that the would go after the congregation too. Foolish people. I hope the church has members who are healthcare providers, vents, a place to care for them and other medical supplies to provide end of life care for them.

Four parishes rank in Top 20 U.S. counties for COVID-19 deaths

"Orleans Parish has had one of the highest death rates per capita since the crisis started, but what we're seeing now in Louisiana is that there are a number of other parishes that are quickly climbing up the list," said Wagner.

"Now, we sort of have the dubious distinction of having five parishes in the top 20 in the country in terms of fatality rates, so it's pretty alarming," admitted Wagner.

Battling coronavirus, Louisiana state Rep. Reggie Bagala is put on a ventilator, close friend says

A Louisiana lawmaker whose constituency includes Grand Isle has been put on a ventilator to assist his breathing as he battles the new coronavirus, a close friend of his said Thursday.

In effort to slow coronavirus, Grand Isle shutting to outsiders and imposing curfew

Those entering the island community will have to show proof that they own a residence or a camp there or that they are needed for work. The new restrictions come as the town steps up efforts to slow the spread of coronavirus, Grand Isle government said in a news release.

A checkpoint will be set up at the Jefferson Parish line leading into the barrier island community, the release says.

Louisiana coronavirus stay-at-home order extending to April 30, John Bel Edwards announces

Gov. John Bel Edwards is extending the coronavirus stay-at-home order in Louisiana to April 30, he announced in a press conference Thursday.

The extension, which is in line with guidance from the White House, ensures thousands of businesses — including all bars, casinos, gyms and others — will remain closed for the month of April. K-12 schools will also remain closed, restaurants will be limited to delivery, take-out and drive-thru, and gatherings of 10 or more are banned.

Help on the way: Out-of-state nurses, docs join coronavirus fight in Louisiana hospitals

HCA Healthcare sent 15 nurses this week from Kansas City-area hospitals to help at Tulane Medical Center, which it manages, and HCA has 200 more signed up to volunteer, if needed.

Ochsner Health System officials said Thursday that they had recruited more than 140 nurses from other states to help plug their staffing needs. And the Louisiana Board of Medical Examiners has granted 35 emergency temporary permits to doctors and respiratory therapists so far, many of whom have not arrived yet

Birx warns of coming coronavirus hot spots across the U.S.

Louisiana is poised to become the next epicenter of the coronavirus crisis, White House officials said Thursday, citing new data that shows that 26 percent of the tests for COVID-19 in that state in recent days have come back positive. That is the second-highest rate of infection in the United States, behind New York and New Jersey, where 35 percent of coronavirus tests have been positive.

LDH shows Acadiana using more of its ICU bed supply than the New Orleans area

In all of Region 4 (Region 4 includes 7 parishes in the southwest part of the state: Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, and Vermillion), there are 1,127 beds in use and 905 available, 95 ventilators in use and 98 are available, but when it comes to intensive care unit beds we are at over 80% current capacity with 134 ICU beds in use and 31 available.

Lafayette Mayor-president Josh Guillory said in Thursday’s press briefing all area hospitals are collaborating to keep medical resources from running out.

Crowley Police use "Purge Siren" to signal curfew for city, says it won't happen again

"The Purge" is a horror film that depicts a time in America when a national holiday is celebrated (The Purge) in which all crimes, including murder are legal for a 12-hour period. When the 12-hour period begins, sirens begin to blare and all emergency services are unavailable.

The Acadia Parish Sheriff, K.P. Gibson, issued a statement on behalf of his department:
"Last night a ”Purge Siren” was utilized by the Crowley Police Department as part of their starting curfew. We have received numerous complaints with the belief that our agency was involved in this process. We were not involved in the use of the “Purge Siren” and will not utilize any type of siren for this purpose. Calls regarding this matter should be directed to the Crowley Police / Chief Broussard and not the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office."

Louisiana nursing homes with coronavirus clusters won't be ID'd anymore, officials say

On Friday, state officials said that 261 residents in 61 separate nursing facilities have tested positive for the highly contagious respiratory infection. Sixty have perished from complications related to the disease.
<snip>

Until Wednesday, the state had been naming the individual facilities where clusters have been identified. The state defines a cluster as two or more related cases.

But Thursday, amid a massive jump in total positive cases among all groups, officials said they would not issue an update, and that they had been working with the Centers for Disease Control on the best way to report on senior care facility infections. By Friday, health officials said the volume of homes made it too difficult to report the names of individual facilities.
