Ms. Lochtefeld and Mr. Toolan had dated since being introduced by a mutual friend on Nantucket on Labor Day in 2004. But after an intense six-week courtship, Ms. Lochtefeld broke up with Mr. Toolan a few days before she was killed.
On Oct. 23, 2004, Ms. Lochtefeld flew to Nantucket, where she stopped at the police station to ask how to get a restraining order. She did not request one, though. Two days later, the day of her death, she took a box to a parcel-shipping store on Nantucket to be sent to Mr. Toolan in New York. A clerk has reportedly said she told him it was for her psycho ex-boyfriend.
Mr. Toolan arrived in Nantucket later that morning and rented a Ford Escape. He then drove to a marine hardware store to buy two knives, a clerk testified at the trial. He then went to Ms. Lochtefelds cottage, where, officials say, he killed her after she returned.
