SOLVED MA - Jane Britton, 22, Harvard student, Cambridge, 7 Jan 1969

When I lived in the area in the 1980s, people associated with Jane's department thought that a faculty curator of the Peabody Museum (Harvard anthropology museum) was the one. She was purported to have been involved with him and he had acted suspiciously, etc. He is an Eastern European national who specializes in the Middle East. That was the word on the street at the time.

Probably a garbled reference to "CCLK." When it went down, he wasn't considered a suspect.

At the time he was widely (but privately, among the grad students) criticized for having alleged replied, when asked whether he had been having an affair with Jane, "If you have steak at home, why would you go out for hamburger?" We did not like hearing our beloved friend insulted in that way.

If Jane was involved with any faculty member, and she may have been, it wasn't CCLK. It would have been the person I'm still declining to identify, even though he's dead.

She also did an excavation with the "bad guy" no one will name.

No, I don't remember ever hearing anything about another woman in JH's life. That's why I asked what the evidence was.

As for doing "an excavation with the 'bad guy' no one will name," she certainly did no excavations with the bad guy I won't name. Absolutely not. Completely different parts of the world, different time period, etc.

If you're talking about CCLK, whose name I know perfectly well but I think we're not supposed to spell out, according to site rules, then yes -- she excavated with him. Certainly.

However, I'm not aware that CCLK was ever a serious suspect. I refer you back to my posting in which Lt Joyce, speaking of my suspect, declared in writing his belief the guy might have been involved. I could find the exact quote, but I don't think it's necessary.

According to this article, LE were not convinced that " The Boston Strangler " was responsible for the brutal murder of Beverly Samans .
Apparently Beverly S. was an opera singer.
Wondering if Jane B, as an accomplished musician, ever performed with, or knew Ms. Samans?
If so, could there be a connection and after all these years, everyone barking up the wrong tree/s?
imo.

Could it be the killer wanted to "murder the talent", ie a singer, Beverly Samans, has items around her throat, Jane B, an archaeologist is " buried " under blankets and bludgeoned with an artifact?
They are close in age and similar in appearance.
imo, speculation.

"On University Road in Cambridge, Beverly Samans is found stretched on her bed, unclad, stabbed, and strangled, her hands tied behind her back. Two silk scarves and a nylon stocking are knotted around her neck. They were not the cause of death, rules the medical examiner, because none of the delicate bones in her neck is fractured. She has been stabbed 16 times, four times in the neck, 12 in the chest, including five times in the left lung.

"This could not have been done," says a detective, "by a person of sound mind."

Samans was a musical therapist and a graduate student in music at Boston University. In her typewriter was a page of her thesis. The topic: "Mental Aberrations."

why were these people doing construction work .as far as i know excavation is the form of either with shovels but more so with a excavater to dig holes ..dig something up..

Jane was a graduate student at Harvard University (studying archaeology).

So, the excavations discussed in this thread are related to archaeological expeditions.

And once again…All goes silent on Jane. WHY???

I;m here. I'll bump.

Wonder if any of the players in this antiquities scandal were around during the time Jane went to school?
Any chance some random, or not so random person was looking to steal some artifacts to resell to unscrupulous buyers?
imo, speculation.

Kapoor's art empire

Before his arrest in 2011 in Germany, Kapoor had a 30-year reputation in the antiquity business.

He owned an upscale Manhattan gallery called Art of the Past, which specialized in South Asian antiquities, and was seen as a one-stop shop for anyone looking to buy what was then considered legitimate ancient art from India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

I don't remember ever seeing any artifacts in Jane's apartment that would have been interesting to collectors. There was the odd Upper Paleolithic point, some pottery (but not from Iran), and a few other small artifacts. These are items that, today, a person could pick up on eBay for a few bucks.

Stuff that sells in the seriously high-level antiquities market usually come from, or is arranged by, people much higher in the chain than a grad student. It's true, though, that one might imagine a situation in which a graduate student comes into possession of information about illegal activities which could destroy projects and reputations and lead to legal difficulties, and therefore would need to be silenced. Yes, a person might imagine such a thing, but it would be only in the realm of imagination.

The Kapoor dates don't quite work out, either.

And thus another year ends -- and another anniversary's on the horizon -- with no progress. I'm not surprised, but I'm saddened.

Thanks for the reply, something about this case seems untouchable somehow, one would think it would be highlighted in some cold case show, or that there would be appeals for new tips in order to close the case, imo.

Happy New Year to one and all, hopefully next year will be the one when this and other cold cases are bust wide open!!
