GUILTY MA - Jassy Correia, 23, last seen at club Venu, phone shut off, Boston, 24 Feb 2019 *arrest*

"LAWRENCE — Thirteen months before her death, Jassy Correia survived a brutal and potentially disfiguring kidnapping and beating at the hands of her child's father, a Lawrence man who is now serving a state prison sentence related to that January 2018 incident.

[SBM]

Her injuries were so serious that prosecutors charged Castro with the crime of mayhem, the intentional disfigurement of someone, as well as multiple assault counts. Castro was also charged with kidnapping — the same charge now lodged against Correia's accused killer, Louis Coleman III.

[SBM]

There is no evidence at this point to suggest that the two cases are connected. Investigators have said nothing as to Coleman's motive.

Called by mother

On Jan. 14 of this year, Castro was found guilty by a Salem Superior Court jury of kidnapping, witness intimidation and attempting to lie to police, who had gone to his 210 Phillips St. apartment after his own mother called them out of concern for Correia's safety.

[SBM]

Castro was sentenced by Judge James Lang to 4 1/2 to five years in state prison, followed by three years of probation. Among the conditions was that he have no contact with Correia.

The conviction came without the cooperation of Correia, however.

After 152 phone calls from Castro, who was being held at the Middleton Jail, Correia told prosecutors she did not want to testify. Police and prosecutors pleaded with the young woman and even obtained an arrest warrant after she ignored a summons.

According to court filings, Castro had already addressed that subject with Correia, telling her that she'd spend no more than three days in jail for ignoring a summons — a statement she parroted to a prosecutor in a phone call.

Staying in shelter

At the time of her death, Correia was staying in an emergency shelter in Lynn.

Castro is the father of Correia's young daughter, who was born in December 2016.

[SBM]

With credit for the year he spent in custody awaiting trial, Castro could be released in as little as 3 1/2 years from now.

That’s probably why there was no sexual assault. She put up a fight. She had been there before. Sad.

I don't understand why the people of MA would allow this.

Our View: Change Mass. law hiding domestic violence arrest records

For generations, a culture of secrecy and control was one of the issues that kept domestic violence victims from seeking help and shielded batterers from being held accountable for their actions. Although great strides have been made in recent years to shine a light on these crimes, a law intended to protect the privacy of victims may also be shielding their abusers from accountability and enabling them to continue the cycle of abuse.

Privacy of victims.

And this case shows one result of respecting the privacy of victims.

Although great strides have been made in recent years to shine a light on these crimes, a law intended to protect the privacy of victims may also be shielding their abusers from accountability and enabling them to continue the cycle of abuse.

Privacy of victims.

And this case shows one result of respecting the privacy of victims.
Also from the article:

“According to Quinn, the DA’s office monitors 156 men considered high-risk offenders. Shockingly, these offenders have victimized 569 victims. They have 869 protective orders out against them and they’ve been criminally charged 8,414 times. These are clearly very dangerous people who ought to be behind bars.” (BBM)

Not arrested, but charged. That’s 54 charges per offender on average. I couldn’t believe how high the number was and thought I’d done my math wrong but then realized this was the number of the charges, not convictions ... sigh.

And:
“That’s because the Massachusetts domestic violence law enacted in August 2014 prohibits police departments from releasing any information about domestic violence arrests or incidents, unless the victim dies.”

Common sense tells me well ... that’s too late.

Further, it doesn’t make sense to me that “the information is still available in court records, which can be released after an arraignment.” So does this mean once the suspect is arraigned, all of a sudden, the victim’s privacy is no longer of concern?

I’m really not sure whose rights the law was intended to protect .

OK, then this suggests this murder and other possible crimes are more likely to be premeditated. A "nobody can catch me" plate, for those times when you will be planning serious crimes.

Not how I had him figured. There may be more to his story.

I literally don’t think...can’t say....my fingers don’t even know what to type!!! I am horrified and ripped open by what Jassy endured. Never mind that idek what she truly endured with creepy Coleman! I will never understand why she was made to endure such horrifying attacks in such a brief life. Or ever. Or understand the evils that committed those acts! She just wanted her ONE night - her birthday - to be a typical carefree person out having fun. Idek if this is coherent. I’m floored.:(

I totally completely agree. When I read that they were stolen tags, one word came to mind:
*PREDATOR*
The fact that they were stolen a year ago makes me HIGHLY suspect that this isn’t his first foray into criminal activities.jmo

It's two years if they were stolen in 2017.

WOW!!!

I thought earlier reports said the car was registered to his MOTHER in California?!?!

Edited: Is it her car, but he had different sets of license plates ??

Edit#2: An also wondering why a Systems Engineer would be driving Mommy's car? That doesn't make sense to me. It's a 6 figure salary usually in the area, or close to it. He should have easily been able to afford at least basic transportation. Weird!! I know we can't sleuth his mother, but Makes you wonder if she's well.

That might have been the license plate from the car he was driving when he was in school in California.

“PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – The car that police say had the body of Jassy Correia in the trunk had a stolen license plate out of California.

[SBM]

According to a spokesperson for the California Department of Motor Vehicles, the license plate on the car Coleman was driving when he was pulled over in Delaware last week was affixed with a license plate that was reported stolen in April 2017.

‘The California DMV received an application for replacement of the stolen plate on April 17, 2017,’ spokesperson Artemio Armenta told WFXT in Boston.

Armenta said the plate was stolen from a vehicle owner in Sacramento County, and it had been on a Subaru. Coleman was driving a Buick when he was arrested.

[SBM]

Coleman’s Facebook page says he started a job as a ‘systems engineer’ at Raytheon – a defense contractor in Portsmouth – in 2017 (the same year the plate was stolen).

[SBM]

Target 12 also reported that Providence police visited his apartment in February 2018 – one year before Correia went missing – because he was hearing someone knock at his door.

Police told Coleman there was nothing they could do unless he felt threatened, according to a dispatcher’s log.
