MA - Justice for Officer John O’Keefe * NO DISCUSSION * media, timelines, docs * NO DISCUSSION *

Attorney Brennan has been recognized by Super Lawyers of Massachusetts and has been named as one of the country's top 100 trial Lawyers by the National Trial Lawyers Association. He also serves as an adjunct professor of Law teaching Trial Practice at Suffolk University Law School, and is a frequent lecturer to other lawyers and students in trial practice.

DM: She watched him put his head inside the door and then nothing.

KR: I texted him and within minutes of him exiting my car, he’s not answering his phone.

DM: What happened next?

KR: I left.

KR: I said, could I have hit him?

DM: In court, a prosecutor (ADA Lally) read from a First Responder’s interview: the defendant made several statements: "I hit him, I hit him, I hit him"

The children testified for the prosecution and described yelling and arguments between O’Keefe and Read, which they said became more frequent in the weeks leading up to O’Keefe’s death.

Both children described an incident in which O'Keefe asked Read to leave the house and she refused. "She said no. She was swearing. She got very loud," the niece said.

The night O’Keefe died, the niece was home alone and remembered being awakened by Read at 4:30 a.m. She said Read shook her, left and came back and told her to call O’Keefe.

"She was just pacing down the hallway, asking what could've happened," the niece testified. "She said, 'Maybe I did something.' Later, she said, ‘Maybe a snowplow hit him.’”

Karen Read murder trial: O'Keefe's niece, nephew testify about rocky relationship

…fragments of broken glass on the rear bumper on Read’s vehicle …
and a broken cocktail glass was found at what appeared to be
patches of blood near Mr. O’Keefe’s body
blood in the vicinity of the victim…
KR BAC around the time period of 12:45 a.m., would have been between .13% - .29%.

John has no coat on
Its windy — so I drop him off
He goes up the driveway and approaches the side door
And... as I see him approach the side door, I look down at my phone
After about 10 minutes of waiting in her car she became irritated that O’Keefe still hadn’t gotten in touch with her and she drove back to his home… she continued calling him before she says she
… fell asleep around 1:30 in the morning. She then woke up before 5 a. m.
and he still wasn’t home.
She started canvassing the neighborhood (20 minutes) then called John’s friends KerR and JMc.

Read stated could I have hit him
Did I hit him

MG: Firefighter overheard you say I hit him, I hit him, I hit him

KR: I said I hit him it was preceded by
a did and proceeded by a question mark
what I thought could have happened was
that did I incapacitate him unwittingly
somehow and then in his drunkenness
passed out

MG: Is it possible that you might have hit him unwittingly in your admittedly very large SUV
KR no, not possible

According to O’Keefe’s cell phone GPS records and 11 witness statements he never entered 34F.
A medical examiner found no signs of Mr. O’Keefe being involved in any type of physical altercation or fight.

WR: She felt she struck something. She said, Dad, I think I struck something. I said what do you mean... right and this was in the hospital … I remember all right backing up and hitting something..
And that’s how that vehicle was damaged...

I said did I hit him
Could I have hit him
Did I hit him

It was howling wind
I had U2 blasting on the stereo and I thought did he somehow come out try to flag me down
Which was the reaction I was hoping to garner as I slowly pulled away from the house
Did he come out and maybe trip or bend over to pick up his cell phone and
I ran over his foot
And then he passed out drunk
I didn’t think I hit him hit him but could I have clipped him

(6:28)

KR: My eyes are peeled.
And I said he’s right —— there. I jumped out of the passenger side, and I fell into the street.
His eyes were shut, and he had spots of blood in different areas on his face and he was still, not stiff, but still. It was cold. I felt cold.

But I didn’t feel dangerously cold.
And it was just an odd feeling to know that I’m okay, Im not dying, but he’s here with me, and he’s dying.
And I can’t warm him up.

Today marks three years since Boston Police Officer [2490] John O’Keefe was left to die in a blizzard.
Someone decided that for him… decided not to seek help for Officer O'Keefe... no call for help…
"He didnt look mortally wounded as far as I could see”

Justice for the loved ones of Officer John O'Keefe

@KristinaRex

Full comment from Judge: "The Commonwealth just provided the court with information that causes me grave concern. The implications of that information may have profound effects on this defense and defense counsel." (1/2)

"So for that reason, I’m going to suspend today, so that when we meet again to address these issues, all affected will be appropriately prepared." (2/2)
