Close Friends Remember John O'Keefe As Loyal & Generous

Close friends of Boston police officer John O'Keefe are speaking out ahead of Karen Read's retrial. Read is accused in the death of O'Keefe. (4/10/25) MORE

Timestamp: 14:20: They would do a victory lap (loop around) at the end of each day and wave to their fans and supporters, day of mistrial got in the SUV and left, no victory lap.

At exactly 5 a.m. the next morning, Roberts said she was woken up by a call from Read, a minute or two after she had missed another call from Read.

“I answered the phone and she said, ‘John’s dead. Kerry, Kerry, Kerry,’ and then she hung up,” Roberts said. “[She was] very loud. She woke my husband, who was sleeping.”

Roberts said she tried to call Read back, but got no answer. After about five minutes, Read called again, and told Roberts she believed O’Keefe might be dead and may have been hit by a plow. According to Roberts, Read said O’Keefe would never leave his niece, who was home, alone, and she believed something was wrong.

Read wanted to go directly to Fairview Road but Roberts said they should check O’Keefe’s home “to see if he passed out somewhere” and drop off Read’s car, so they did that first. Roberts called O’Keefe a “neat freak” with a strict rule against wearing shoes in the house, and said that she and McCabe removed their shoes before going inside, but Read did not.

"John, was that you?"

Read says she drove around Canton for 20 minutes before
meeting up with McCabe and Kerry Roberts, another friend of O'Keefe's. The three women returned to O'Keefe's house, thinking he might have made his way home.

"I had told both Jen and Kerry that I cracked my taillight. And I said, 'I just hit my car on top of everything,' but I didn't look at the damage. And both women said, 'It's cracked. It's cracked. Calm down, you cracked your taillight. You're OK, let's go look for John,'" Read said.

Judge Beverly Cannone determined that Read’s defense had not fulfilled its reciprocal discovery obligations with regard to a pair of accident reconstructionists first hired by the federal government. The decision came after the first day of testimony in Read’s second trial.

Many of those text messages — between Read attorney Alan Jackson and the experts, who work for the firm ARCCA — were deleted, Robert Alessi, another lawyer for Read, admitted.

Key witness in Karen Read trial speaks out

Kerry Roberts, a key witness for the prosecution and John O’Keefe’s lifelong friend, tells “GMA” that she believes “people have forgotten John, in general. He is the victim. He’s lost his life.”

“I want to tell you something about data and science before we get to that night. I had mentioned that underneath John’s body was a cellphone. A cellphone is an amazing piece of technology. It is like a computer. It carries extraordinary data. And when they found the cellphone, the only companion to John O’Keefe that night, they studied the cellphone and there’ll be some remarkable data,” Brennan said.

He said location and health data collected by O’Keefe’s iPhone points to the phone and his body being left in the cold all night long.
