Borges mentioned that the two of them went out to smoke marijuana on the night Lee "went missing". Is it possible that it was something other than marijuana or perhaps it was laced with something?

  • #23
Or Borges took something, maybe a hallucinogenic of some type before he and Lee met up that day.

Watching his grandmother speak is simply heartbreaking. What a horrific way to lose a young loved one.

:rose: :rose: :rose:

Rest in peace young Lee.

Its so hard to comprehend the rising numbers of death R/T stabbings, shootings, beatings, etc. I know I'm older than I feel, mentally, but I remember it was a real shock when I was in Jr. High and High School if somebody got in a fist fight and somebody came out bleeding. Now, that's considered minor. My son and a friend went to sign up for the service when they were 20, and he said there were two others there whom they neither one knew. Roger said they tried to stir up something there, and he and his friend just ignored them.
Later that eve, the troublemakers got behind them and deliberately hit the back of the PU. By then, Roger had had enough. They got out ready to fistfight, and the other two got out with tire irons! They got back in the PU, and pulled into a busy, well lit store, and the other two drove off. The next day, they went early to the recruiter's office and told them about what had happened. When the recruiter and other staff heard about that, they told the troublemakers they were not acceptable candidates for armed svs. I was happy to see it end that way, and nobody got hurt. We never found out why this transpired in the first place. And now, 16 years later, we hear alot about random people being targeted for no particular reason.
I almost dread the fact that I have two grandsons in their teens, and soon to be three. I guess all I can do is pray they won't get hurt, or worse for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Interesting video at this link where the mayor of Lawrence is talking to the media about the case:

http://boston.cbslocal.com/2016/12/08/lawrence-mayor-dan-rivera-teen-decapitated-murder-lee-manuel-viloria-paulino/

While he is standing behind the police department he is setting up a 4-person review panel into the police handling of the case in response to community and political pressure.

Toward the end of the video he states that police are looking into the possibility that there were more people than just the suspect involved.

I also found a statement by the Police Chief, quoted in the article, a bit disappointing:

In a statement Police Chief James Fitzpatrick said: “The Lawrence Police Department took this case seriously from the onset. We now allege that the suspect deliberately misled investigators by sending them in the wrong direction. We will debrief and examine all actions taken.”

BBM

Usually suspects aren't known to tell the truth, are they?? Why would you take what he said for granted and be (easily?) misled?

Hey,

Any updates on this? You know me, can't find a thing....

TIA!

I couldn't find an update on Borges. In April, charges were filed against an unnamed juvenile in relation this case.

http://www.eagletribune.com/news/merrimack_valley/second-suspect-charged-in-connection-with-paulino-murder/article_09016a4f-2935-5648-bbd5-8c1994f51904.html

A 16-year old Lawrence male was arraigned Friday in Lawrence Juvenile Court on multiple charges in connection with the Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino murder case.

The unnamed juvenile was charged with breaking and entering, intimidation of a witness and larceny, according to a statement from the office of Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.

Judge Jose Sanchez released the defendant on personal recognizance and ordered him to attend school and to stay away from all of the witnesses in the Viloria-Paulino murder case.

Examiner mum on autopsy delay

http://www.eagletribune.com/news/merrimack_valley/examiner-mum-on-autopsy-delay/article_72f9ddd1-930c-5a9d-bfa5-0539b00ded89.html

Having handled some 30 murder cases over the years, veteran defense attorney Edward Hayden said he's never waited more than six weeks for a state-generated autopsy report.

But Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino, 16, was found beheaded on a city riverbank on Dec. 1 and an autopsy report still has not been issued.

Hayden represents Mathew Borges, 16, the Lawrence High School student charged with the first-degree murder of Viloria-Paulino.

"This the longest one I've waited for by far," Hayden said of the autopsy report.

http://www.masslive.com/news/index.ssf/2017/09/defense_for_matthew_borges_tee_1.html

The defense team representing Mathew Borges, a teenager accused of beheading his classmate, seeks to suppress his statements made to police after the body was found.

In addition to the 16-year-old's statements to police, the defense seeks statements made to police by classmates of the teen.

In a motion filed by the court this week, the teen's defense claims the then-15-year-old's parents were not present when he spoke with police nor was he informed of his Miranda rights.

http://www.eagletribune.com/news/merrimack_valley/defense-wants-statements-evidence-tossed-in-beheading-case/article_b7457835-0865-5eca-adf3-cd4f8ab99718.html

The defense for accused killer Mathew Borges wants to know if the state contends he acted alone or had help in the beheading murder of fellow teenager Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino.

Defense attorney Edward Hayden on Thursday filed a number of motions including a request to prosecutors for a bill of particulars — more detailed information — on the crime Borges allegedly committed.

Borges "seeks a bill of particulars stating whether he is alleged to be the principal or a joint venturer. If (Borges) is alleged to be a joint venturer, the bill of particulars should identify the alleged principal or principals. Such notice is particularly warranted here since no other person had been charged with the murder of Lee Manuel Paulino," Hayden wrote in the motion filed in Salem Superior Court.

Answers elude family a year after beheading of Lawrence teen

http://www.eagletribune.com/news/merrimack_valley/answers-elude-family-a-year-after-beheading-of-lawrence-teen/article_d7aef04a-c6b9-5f3a-9c8c-06d89a1191dd.html

Two teens have been arrested so far, including his Lawrence High classmate Mathew Borges, 16, who is charged with Viloria-Paulino's first-degree murder.

But 12 months after the teen's death no motive for the murder has been revealed.

Prosecutors are mum on the subject and Borges' defense attorney, Edward Hayden of Lynn, described the absence of an alleged motive as "unusual."

Defense attacks phone search in beheading case
http://www.eagletribune.com/news/me...cle_1f299f6a-175b-593f-81d7-6709517c1fb6.html

Investigators seized Borges' cell phone on Nov. 29, 2016, two days before the body of Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino, 16, was found decapitated on a riverbank off Water Street.
[.....]
Investigators subsequently took his phone for 10 days during which they obtained a search warrant and allegedly recovered "some evidence they want to use at the trial," he said.

The motion states Borges "enjoyed a reasonable expectation of privacy on Nov. 29, 2016" and he requests all evidence derived from the cell phone to be suppressed.
[.....]
A hearing was held on the motion in Salem Superior Court earlier this month. Judge James Lang is expected to issue his decision on the motion by Feb. 14.

Judge allows cell-phone evidence in beheading case

http://www.eagletribune.com/news/merrimack_valley/judge-allows-cell-phone-evidence-in-beheading-case/article_b2492dee-43eb-5d84-adb2-4ed2ac42e78d.html

The defense for a Lawrence teenager accused of beheading his classmate was unsuccessful in getting his client's cell phone tossed from evidence in the first-degree murder case.

Judge James Lang denied a request by Edward Hayden of Lynn, the attorney for Matthew Borges, to suppress the evidence retrieved from the cell phone that was seized by police.

Among potential evidence found on the phone was a deleted message from October 2016 in which Borges allegedly wrote, "'You and I need to discuss demons we will face when the task is done,'" according to paperwork detailing Lang's decision.

Borges is due back in court April 13.
