Demons, a beheading and a robbery: Here’s what we’ve learned so far in the murder trial of Mathew Borges

May 5, 2019

"It was a chilling message. “I think of killing someone and smirk.”

That message was sent two weeks before authorities say Mathew Borges beheaded his classmate, 16-year-old Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino in Lawrence.

The text and Facebook messages were a focus in the murder trial against Borges, who was 15 when authorities say he killed Viloria-Paulino. The defense lawyer for Borges said all of the messages don’t prove murder....

Here is what we have learned so far as the murder trial against Borges continues in Salem Superior Court:..."

Fourth person testifies Borges said he killed Lawrence teen

"SALEM, Mass. — A fourth young man has testified that he heard Mathew Borges say he killed Lawrence teen Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino in 2016.

Julius Paulino, 18, of Haverhill, who is not related to Viloria-Paulino, testified Tuesday morning at Borges' murder trial that he also listened to a phone call on the night of Nov. 18, 2016, in which Borges said "he killed him."

Paulino testified Borges sounded "scared and panicked" as he spoke on speaker phone to Paulino and several other young people that night.

Paulino testified that he and four others had just broken into Viloria-Paulino's home on Forest Street. Borges was tasked with getting Viloria-Paulino out of his house so the others could steal electronics, clothes and Gucci belts, according to testimony in the trial.

Fourth person testifies Borges said he killed Lawrence teen

May 7, 2019

"SALEM, Mass. — A fourth young man has testified that he heard Mathew Borges say he killed Lawrence teen Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino in 2016.

Julius Paulino, 18, of Haverhill, who is not related to Viloria-Paulino, testified Tuesday morning at Borges' murder trial that he also listened to a phone call on the night of Nov. 18, 2016, in which Borges said "he killed him."...

Last week, three young men — Jonathan Miranda, 18, Angel Betancourt, 20, and his brother, Nazario Betancourt, 17 — all testified they had broken into Viloria-Paulino's home on the evening of Nov. 18, 2016, to steal electronics, clothes and belts...

All four have testified they have not faced criminal charges. The fourth person who allegedly broke into Viloria-Paulino's home, Mucio Lopez, asserted his Fifth Amendment privilege before the trial started on April 29....

The trial is expected to last into next week. Prosecutors may rest their case on Thursday. It's unclear if Borges will testify in his own defense."

We are waiting on Judge Kazanjian and the jury before testimony resumes this am in #Borges trial. Prosecutors will continue calling witnesses. @EagleTrib

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Judge Helene Kazanjian is back on the bench. Ruling on a motion, Kazanjian says she's going to allow the mother of Jonathan Miranda, 18, to testify. Miranda testified earlier in the trial and said #Borges told him he killed Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino and cut off his head.

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Prosecutors said they want to questions Jonathan Miranda's mother about admissions the teen made to her after he was questioned by police after Paulino's body was found on Dec. 1, 2016. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Jurors are back. Testimony should start very soon. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Jennifer Montgomery is the next witness for the prosecution. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Montgomery is a supervisor in the DNA lab. She processes items of evidence to make a DNA profile. Prosecutor Jessica Strasnick is questioning. Montgomery is detailing her education and training now. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
DNA is found in all of the cells of your body. With the exception of identical twins no two people have the same profile, says Montgomery. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Montgomery is explaining to jurors how the unit the state police lab she oversees works and how they test things for DNA #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
DNA profiles were generated for both Paulino and #Borges in this case, Montgomery testifies.

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Paulino's DNA was detected in the state police testing. #Borges was not, Montgomery testified.

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Montgomery is testifying that various times taken from the riverbank near where Paulino's remains were found, including a sled and some rope, were tested for DNA but didn't produce any clear results. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Paulino's sweatshirt tested positive for his DNA, she says. Montgomery is done and leave the stand. No cross examination by the defense. #Borges

Next prosecution witness is Dr. James Pokines, a state forensic anthropologist. He examines bones and trauma on corpses. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
He also teaches forensic anthropology at BU. He was asked to examine Paulino's bones that were removed during his autopsy by Dr. Maria Del Mar Capo-Martinez #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
The bones are put in an incubator with gentle detergent to remove soft tissue and then he examines them for trauma. He says he's often asked to look at bones when dismemberment occurs. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Jurors are looking at Paulino's vertebrae, a picture Pokines too. "This area received substantial hacking trauma ... Hacking is when you take something sharp ... These bones are cut into pieces." He points to vertebrae that's cut into two pieces. #Borges looking at the photo

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Jurors see a pic of more bones he examined. "Part of it has been sheared off," Pokines said. "There's some additional hacking trauma...." #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Dr. Pokines has said "hacking trauma" at least 4 times so far during his testimony. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
"You can see individual hack marks on the bone," Dr. Pokines tells jurors as they view another photo. The photo is not shown to the entire courtroom. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Dr. Pokines telling jurors part of a cervical vertebrae in Paulino's neck was hacked, split in half. He says there's evidence of a hacking and sawing motion with a blade on the bone. Jurors now see a picture of the jaw bone, with "heavy amounts of fracturing." #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
A picture of the left mandible shows a large fracture on the bone, he says. Prosecutor James Gubitose is asking Dr. Pokines questions. Jurors are now looking at the left wrist bone. "The inside of those bones had multiple hacking impacts," Pokines says. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Some bones showed that growth had not been completed yet, Dr. Pokines testified. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Paulino's mother is sitting with her family members in the first row of the courtroom during his graphic testimony. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Jurors are now looking at a picture of the radius and "different places were a blade impacted," Dr. Pokines. The bone was "chopped into" and fractured. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
"All the trauma I saw was consistent with a sharp blade," Dr. Pokines testified. He did not see any evidence a saw was used because there were no teeth marks. "Sharp and heavy bladed" was how he described the weapon used to inflict the bone damage to Paulino #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
No defense cross examination on Dr. Pokines and he leaves the stand. Julius Paulino is the next prosecution witness to testify. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Julius Paulino, 18, lives in Haverhill and goes to Haverhill High. He used to live in Lawrence. He has two weeks left at Haverhill High. Prosecutor Jay Gubitose is questioning him. Asks him to recall his sophomore year at Lawrence High. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Julius Paulino knows #Borges. He met him through his friend Mucio, he testifies.

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Julius was in the "Game Winners" group chat on Facebook with other teens. Some have previously testified in the case. The group included #Borges, Jonathan Miranda and at least two others. He says he also knew Lee Paulino.

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Julius said he met Lee Paulino multiple times at school, in the park, went to his house. "Went to his house to chill and ... smoke weed." But Julius said he didn't smoke weed. #Borges was there and did, he testifies.

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Julius was talking with Mucio and heard others saying something about going in a house and stealing. They discussed taking belts and clothing. The belts were Gucci and they were going to re-sell. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Julius Paulino, 18, is the fourth teen to testify about the break-in at Lee Paulino's house on the night of Nov. 18, 2016. "The plan was for Mathew to distract by going to chill behind the Boys & Girls Club while me and the others robbed his house." #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
He testifies 5 of them broke into Paulino's house. They brought duffel bags. #Borges had texted them and said he and Lee were out of the house.

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
After #Borges gave them the signal, they walked from the reservoir where they had gathered down to Paulino's house, Julius Paulino testifies. They were quiet, tried not to make noise and went right into Paulino's room.

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
A credit card or a fork was used to jimmy the door. "Everyone started grabbing the stuff. Whatever we could see. Whatever what was valuable," Julius Paulino testified. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
As they were going through the loot, #borges called. "I heard him say he killed him ... he was scared, crying." Julius said he "panicked" and went home. That weekend, he asked #Borges if he really did it and he said "So it was a joke," Julius says.

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Gubitose is asking Julius about another discussion he had with #Borges. He told "me was stabbing him over and over on his stomach, his back and his throat because he wouldn't shut up." #Borges told him Lee Paulino eventually "gave up."

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Similarly to other teens, Julius said he did not tell police about this when he was questioned. Said he was scared. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Julius also says he knew #Borges owned a knife with a black and gold handle. Also, they found a knife together behind a city school with a "foot long blade" and #Borges kept it, he said.

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Defense attorney Ed Hayden now on cross of Julius. He asked Julius about break-in. "You didn't go to police when Lee's body was found, tell your parents what happened, you didn't tell anyone at school what happened, the police came to you?" "Correct," Julius says to all #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Julius said he previously denied knowledge of crimes. Hayden is asking him about a variety of things he said "he didn't know" about. "Correct," Julius Paulino says, noting he was "scared." #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Answering Hayden's question, Julius admits to taking a backpack from Lee Paulino's backpack. He says there was a jar of coins in the backpack that made it heavy. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Computer and jewelry were left behind in the break? Hayden asks. "Yes," says Julius Paulino #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
"I remember there being like three sweaters, the jar that I had, a pair of headphones, I remember there being keys, Lee's keys, and um, I don't remember the belts that we said we were going to take," Julius Paulino says of the break-in #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Defense attorney Ed Hayden is still questioning him about the break-in at Lee Paulino's. Julius Paulino said he took a pair of headphones and a sweater after dividing up their loot. But he doesn't know where it went. "I believe I might have dropped it," he says. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Hayden asks Julius if he stole Lee's headphones. He denies selling them. "Everyone has headphones," Julius replies. Hayden continues his cross of Julius Paulino who has admitted on the stand to breaking into murder victim's Lee Paulino's home on Nov. 18, 2016.

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Hayden now asking Julius about the phone call from #Borges to Mucio, who put #Borges on speaker phone that night. Julius has testified moments again he heard #Borges say he killed Lee Paulino during that phone call on Nov. 18, 2016.

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
One of Hayden's questions triggers a sidebar with attorneys. We cannot hear the discussion. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 22h22 hours ago
Julius Paulino admits he never told police or the grand jury initially about the crimes. But Julius testifies he later remembers telling police "that Mathew said when he wouldn't shut up he went for the throat," Julius testifies #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 21h21 hours ago
Julius Paulino admits on stand he's never been charged with burglary, stealing, lying to police... "And you want to keep it that way?" Hayden says. "No comment," says Julius. Judge orders him to answer question though. "Correct," Julius says. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 21h21 hours ago
Prosecutor Jay Gubitose on redirect of Julius Paulino, who says he does not want to be here testifying today. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 21h21 hours ago
Julius Paulino, the fourth teen who testifies that #Borges said he killed Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino, has left the stand. His testimony is over. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 21h21 hours ago
McCarty is answering questions posted by Prosecutor Jessica Strasnick about fingerprints. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 21h21 hours ago
Trooper McCarthy, of crime scene services, is testifying today on Day 7 of the #Borges trial. He responded to Lawrence on Dec. 1, 2016 when Lee Paulino's body was found to take pictures, video and look for potential evidence.

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 21h21 hours ago
Trooper McCarthy was tasked with trying to get fingerprints off the plastic bags with 4 rocks that Lee Paulino's severed head was found in. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 21h21 hours ago
No fingerprints were found on the bags. "High unlikelihood" of finding fingerprints on the bags because they were submerged in water. He also tested some children's sleds that were found near crime scene. "But there was nothing," he testifies. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 21h21 hours ago
Some children's plastic shovels also found in the area. Also, no luck getting any fingerprints off those either, said Trooper McCarthy. #Borges

Jill Harmacinski‏ @EagleTribJill 21h21 hours ago
#Borges jurors have now left for the morning break.
