''Othram's in-house forensic genetic genealogy team then used the profile in a genealogical search to generate new investigative leads in the case, including the identification of potential relatives of the decedent.

Using this new information, a follow-up investigation was conducted, leading investigators to potential relatives of the teen. A reference DNA sample was collected from a possible relative and compared to the DNA profile of the unknown teen using KinSNP® rapid relationship testing. This investigation led to the positive identification of the teen as Anthony Angelli Rea, also known as Anthony Angelli, who was born in 1973. Anthony lived part of his childhood in Malden, MA with his mother and was reported missing from the Harbor School in Newbury in August 1988.

Anyone with information about Anthony Angelli Rea is asked to call the Massachusetts State Police Unresolved Case Unit at 855-MA-SOLVE''.

Based on where he was going to school, he must have been something of a troubled or delinquent youth who may have run away before..

So he was 14-15 when he went missing.

So he went missing as a teenager from the same state where he was found 4 years later, and no one ever connected the dots. That is saddening.

Estimated DOD was listed as 1987-1991 and the first post said "State Police believe that the youth was a runaway, but his description did not match that of any teen-agers reported missing locally."
Did they lose his missing person report or did they not look hard enough? MOO

Probably tossed it in the trash after his 18th. Jmo

Not just the same state but basically the same town (Newbury was where he was attending school; Newburyport is the next town over where he was found - they used to be the same town before 1764)

He was found close to where he disappeared from. I wonder if they purged his case when he turned 18
Or simply never digitized it, so it wasn't in any database.

The word "runaway" should be purged from any vocabulary describing missing kids. It causes a bias in people's minds that this person is not worthy of the investment required to find them.

His missing person report probably didn't exist after he turned 18, but otherwise the authorities at the time obviously missed making the connection.

I have been a consistent Websleuther (locked out of my account), working on this case for the better part of the past 10 years, driving everyone in my life crazy with my theories and comparisons about just who the Essex County John Doe might be. As we know now, he was Anthony Angelli Rea.

I have been fortunate enough to connect with Anthony's only surviving family member, his maternal Aunt, and learn more about his short life, which was marred by abuse, disease, and tragedy. His Aunt has been tasked with the financial responsibility of claiming, transporting, and settling his remains--a costly burden that she had not expected to find herself bearing.

I think that this is where the Websleuths community can continue our incredible work.
A fundraiser has been created to help cover the costs of cremation, relocation, and related expenses, and can be found here. Even if you can’t donate, sharing the fundraiser is a way to honor Anthony and help close this 33-year chapter.

Having been a Websleuther for years, I’ve seen too many Does disappear from the story after identification, and the people who worked tirelessly to identify them are left without closure. This is our opportunity to get closure and help Anthony finally be where he belongs.

It makes sense that a formal missing report was never filed, given that he was found nearby and never identified until now. It's interesting and sad to read more of his story.

Where did you learn this?
I learned this too, from a woman who had been married to his Father initially. If you look at the fundraiser page, those are the pictures of Anthony.
