They don’t say what parts are found, but they estimated the age, not the gender... I would guess the X-ray determined the age from the growth plates.

SUTTON - A local man says the human skull police took from his house in November is nothing more than a trinket he found in a box of items purchased at the Brimfield Outdoor Antiques Shows more than a decade ago.

Nonetheless, police are investigating, and the skull was turned over to the medical examiner, whose staff listed it as “unidentified remains” on the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) website: case number 17290, female, 18 years old or more, dental charting complete, DNA available.

Possibly related? Article from 2007:

Environmental Police confirmed yesterday that they were part of an investigation that turned up human bones being sold at the Brimfield Outdoor Antiques Shows in July and September.

Lt. John S. Pajak said local police were contacted in July by an off-duty New York state trooper who told them he had spotted what appeared to be a human jawbone at one of the booths. Police seized the bone and through their investigation learned it had been found by a man using a metal detector. The bone was found in Massachusetts but police declined to say exactly where.
