I remember Mary Ellen O'Toole saying at the start of all this that: "if he's married, he would go back to his family that night and have a hamburger as though nothing had happened. And he could explain away the scratches because one of the traits of a psychopath is that they are pathological liers...and they are remarkably good at it".

The FedEx home delivery job requirements I posted earlier today was actually a 3rd party company but they required the clean driving record, background check, and license as FedEx requires. Somehow I think Ortiz managed to stay off LE radar and has gotten away with crimes on the past (hence no records) until now.

Moo

I am shocked he was employed as a UPS driver due to their rep for clean living. I'm surprised he scored the job not knowing how to write, read or speak English. How does he ask for a signature? How does he navigate the area's streets without knowing any English?

He has not been arrested before because they say he just recently came to America, prior to killing VM in August 2016. He arrived in America. Found a job. Raped and murdered an American woman. I remain furious that some men think they can take a part of a woman without her permission. He is a danger to American society. LWOP is too kind for his evil wickedness.

but how far is Worcester? perps drive places out of their zone to commit crimes all the time.
Yes and no...they usually commit crimes in their comfort zones but their "comfort zones" do not necessarily have to be close to home...they could be close to work (not necessarily close to home depending on commute), frequently traveled routes (i.e. jobs that require driving like truckers, delivery truck drivers) or areas that hold significance to the perp

he would not need to get one under a separate name, PR is an American territory.
He wouldn't need to but if he wanted to keep his PR one he would have to or the RMV would make him hand it over and they would mark it (hole punch it whatever) making it invalid

I think I read that he just moved to Worcester in March or May of 2016. I'll have to find the quote.

And I just posted that I do think he targeted her specifically. A witness saw his car there at 12:45, before VM even left her house. It obviously wasn't really broken down so I think he was just waiting for her. Like you said, he had probably noticed her running in the past and estimated a timeframe.

He had the opportunity to spy her at the train/bus station or around town from May, June, July to Aug. 7. Now that the timeline is closing in, it appears that he had more time to spend with VM, which makes me shiver.

Does anyone else think he was waiting for her specifically? I live in the area and that road does have occasional joggers/walkers but he parked his car 1/2 mile from her house approximately 30 minutes before she started her walk - that doesn't seem random to me.

:cow: It doesn't seem random because it wasn't. I've always thought it was a targeted event for the reasons you've listed. I thought he'd be a loser still living at home and that his family was fearful of him. Still curious about the divers at the pond and what evidence was plucked from there. How did LE know to go to that spot? K9s? I don't recall.

If the defense attorney can't get the DNA to work in his favor, his next insinuations will be AO and VM had consensual sex and he doesn't know what happened after that.

I don't think he had sex. Because they said attempted rape. So maybe that's why he looks mad in court.

Because he will be getting life without parole while knowing that she put up too much of a fight to give him his rapists satisfaction.

Jmo.

Btw. What crackhead animals want to rape women on the side of the road?

So did he originally tried to abduct her?

I pored over social media yesterday and could not find any profiles I was 100% confident in. Like other posters, I also couldn't find any family or friend comments out in the virtual world either. Odd-

Also, at the time of arrest, was he still working for the FedEx contractor?

The witness (who first spotted the SUV with the hood open at 12:45pm) then again drove past and spotted the unoccupied SUV (this time with the hood shut and the windows shut) at 2:20pm. If we take that at face value, the SUV was parked there on BSR for more than an hour and a half. I'm starting to think Ortiz is more than a risk-taking, over-confident psychopath...he's actually stupid and (for 8 months) very lucky.

My belief all the while. This is all he was. Lucky. He was inches from being caught in the act.

Interesting- this article says his Mom is a cop in PR.
"Colon-Ortiz’s mother is a police officer, Ryan said. Colon-Ortiz came to Worcester in May, Ryan said, and immediately found a job working for FedEx to support his wife’s two young children here, and another child of his own in Puerto Rico."

When Bail is set, it is supposed to fit the crime and circumstances based on the defendants background. It is supposed to be a non bias decision, and not determined by how guilty or non guilty the judge may think he is.
10 million is extremely high for the charges he has been charged with.
He has no past criminal record.
The only think that I can think of is that the judge determined he was a flight risk.
I am surprised and wonder why he still hasn't been charged with murder. His days of being questioned by LE are over.
If he was charged, He could have been held without Bail.

Flight risk

a few thoughts:

+ I do think that they were probably following him or he was on their radar for a while. it does seem extremely coincidental that their detective randomly saw a dark SUV and thought this might be the guy. unless, it was a very specific kind of dark SUV - like one with a particular sticker or damage or an unusual color like navy. seems like Ortiz's lawyer is also questioning their story of how they found him.

+ I think they probably had a list of everyone who pinged that cell tower during the time of the murder and he may have been on their radar but they needed to find the right time to try to get the DNA.

+ my dad (who is local and used to work in criminal justice) and i have always disagreed about who the killer would be. i thought it would be a random serial killer. he has always believed that it would turn out to be someone who knew vanessa - even very tangentially. he said to me "think about it, if you were out looking for jogging victims, princeton would be the last place you would go because you might see a jogger there once every 6 hours." I'm coming around to his way of thinking. perhaps he regularly saw her on weekends running and decided to stalk her. maybe he had bumped into her in town. maybe he saw her that weekend...

+ i've always been curious how they would know he had short or no hair. that is not something they could determine from DNA. was that info from the eye witness? or was there no hair found on her body and this is how they made that assumption?

+ there is no way this is his first crime. no way a rape, murder and burning in broad day light could be his first crime. terrifying to think what else he may have done. and kudos to the PD for catching him before he had the urge and chance to do it all again.

+ no case has ever hit so close to home for me. i am so relieved they caught this guy. my heart is breaking for her family. the fact that they have to look at this monster's face and hear about everything he did to her is overwhelming. i am sending them lots of love and good thoughts and i hope they will somehow be able to survive this.

all JMO, IMO, MMO

Having worked in and around Princeton in the warmer weather I will say you would definitely see joggers more frequently than every six hours. You could probably find one in 15 to 20 minutes in the warmer months just cruising around on the roads That being said it still does strike me as unlikely that he would have stumbled upon Vanessa in particular since we know she started out only .4 miles from where she ended up. I certainly think he spotted her before. I can't say whether there was ever any previous interaction between them, but it does seem likely that he was aware of her and was at least hopeful that she might be in the area.

The length of hair was a tidbit from witness accounts.

Yes, but why else would she have his DNA under her fingernails?

I also think its liely he did not complete the act of rape, he was used to fear, she was fighting him and it put him down to the small little peon he is.

scratching him when she fought him

Good luck if he tries to use that as a defense.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you see what happened was he tried to rape her and couldn't get the job done so he left. He swears he had nothing to do with murdering her--the DNA under her nails was merely from the attempted rape."

Or maybe he'll go with

"Ladies and gentlemen, this poor hard-working man can't understand English. What had happened was he thought she said "Sí" instead of "No" and when the scratching helped him understand she didn't want to partake in his glorious wonder, he left her alone. The reason this pillar of the community is sitting at the defense table today is because racism."

I hope not, he deserves LWOP or worse. I don't see him beating this rap. defense will try though.

Good luck if he tries to use that as a defense.
