Madeleine McCann General Discussion Thread #27

What confuses me is where was Maddys wardrobe? When you look at the bedroom there is hardly any room for it?

I'm not sure if that's quite possible. I remember a discussion in the Dylan Redwine threads and doing some research on my own about it. From what I understand, it boils down to this:

- LE can ask phone carriers for logs for activity coming from your phone number. This means things like calls.

- If your phone is an older phone (as most people's phones would have been in 2007, IMO) then calculating the general area might be possible through cell phone 'pings'. To put it simply, your phone is always searching for cell sites nearby. It checks for which one has the strongest signal and connects with it. Once it connects it's still sending and receiving a signal because it's a two-way street. By checking which sites got pinged by a phone and when, it might be possible to calculate the general area a phone was in.

- I still haven't figured out whether your phone can still 'ping' cell sites if it's switched off. I've seen different information on this, from no, to it being able to do so if it's switched off as long as there's some battery in it. I suspect it might depend on the model.

- A smartphone is a bit more straightforward because most smartphones have a GPS device installed. How easily once again depends on the brand and type of phone but smartphones in general seem easier to locate.

What does this all mean? This means that it might be possible to discover the general area, maybe at best something more specific, but it won't necessarily tell us who he was with. Something like they were all sitting around a table in the Tapas might be harder to determine.

If he was involved with some kind of pedophile ring and was communicating with someone at the time... it seems like it would make more sense for him to be using a disposable phone and SIM card for communication about those activities, from what I've read that's far more common in criminal circles because it's easier to toss out the evidence.

:twocents:

Thank you. All of this is familiar to me :)

In here we have a crime scene at OC and also the Smiths sighting in the complete different part of the town.. I'd say roughly the Smiths sighting is at least 500 - 700 meters away from Madeleines bedroom.

All switched on mobile phones of old style ( which were possibly used in 2007) were constantly pinging their towers, just to say 'hey, here I am'
There was a group of Smiths, we don't know if they had mobile phones but we assume they did have at least one phone.

If the police has the records from the near by phone towers of all mobile phones used in the area they also have the records of all mobile phones pinging the towers.

If they can calculate how far is the Smiths sighting from the phone tower the Smiths mobile phones were pinging , they can as well calculate if there was any other mobile phone pinging the tower at the same time and at the same distance.

I assume this is quite possible, I know of several police cases that described this but these were in Europe, not in the UK or US. I also assumed the owners of mobile phones did not have GPS, because we are talking about 2009 and poorer countries.

Re phones switched off..it can be located, modern GPS phones especially but the old ones through the sim card..as long as they have battery running. But if the battery is taken out then no..

The question here really is what kind of the data PJ has received from the phone companies at the time.. this was never and nowhere fully reported..

I know a heck of a lot of letters were sent requesting cell phone data, but I have no clue at all if the varying Telco's cooperated.

I assume not.

Everyone's criticising the PJ (naturally) for failing to get it but I don't think folks realise the international legal hoops they PJ would had to have jumped through.

Considering they couldn't even secure the cooperation of the parents, I doubt they expected much cooperation from a bunch of international Telco's.

But heck that's the PJ for you - incompetent biased and totally lazy.

:furious:

They don't need international data.
They just need logs from local mobile phone towers about the phones that were reaching, pinging the towers at the time.
If they had that in full, nothing else is needed...

But what I am seeing is that SY is been complaining about lots of pay as you go phones whose owners they cannot reach..

I am sure this is possible too.. they need logs of phone numbers that were contacted by these phones.

NSA can help a lot :floorlaugh:

Who do you think owns those towers? :waitasec:

Who do you think owns the information that goes through them?

Not the PJ. Probably not even the Portugese. We have many cell towers erected by international telcos here, they pay rent for the land and they even pay Council rates. They are tenants with a right to privacy themselves. Those pings are private information no matter which way you look at it.

Even to provide the pings for ONE PHONE, they would require a Court Order. To release the pings from everyone's phone is just not going to happen unless there is a Court Order compelling them to.

But hey, the PJ probably didn't even bother to try, being fat lazy incompetent and corrupt.

:dunno:

Now, about that efit of Gerry being surpressed....?

What confuses me is where was Maddys wardrobe? When you look at the bedroom there is hardly any room for it?
If you mean for storing her clothes then I would imagine that the children's clothes would mainly be where the parent's had theirs stored.

It is usual for LE to use pings to track a perp's phone.

It is NOT usual (or even practical, probably) to use pings to track EVERYONE'S phone.

That's potentially millions of calls.

Needle in a haystack time....why would you chase up a million other folks when your main suspect is lying to your face? Seems like a massive waste of resources to me but what do I know? Did the McCann ask for it to be done? Did their Crack Team of Detectives do it? If not why not?

:pullhair:

So incredibly critical, always of the PJ.

Can anyone with a superior and competent and slim police force provide a link to a case that was solved by tracking the tower back to the phones, rather than tracking the phone to the tower?

:dunno:

CONTAMINATION of the scene.

I like this Blacksmith works it out how it is but it all makes sense. What i have been thinking and saying myself.

as a point though, who slept in the bed under the window? It looks as though it has been slept in.

http://blacksmithbureau.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/contamination.html

The bed under the window was slept in by Kate the previous night. She and GM had a bit of a tiff the previous evening, because he "ignored her at the Tapas bar." As I recall, that would have been the evening that Gerry invited the voluptuous young employee (who ran the quizzes) to sit at their table. So Kate slept in the other room! This is somewhere in the McCann Files- I can probably find it when I have time.

Are you aware how many people were that night at PDL? How many people at their homes and outdoor were there with their phones, pinging the towers? It's a small town, 21 square kilometers, slightly over three thousand of its own population. I don't think there is a lot of towers in the strict area of the town, where the Smiths sighting happened. And going through all the pings from these towers means probably going through the pings of almost all inhabitants of the town, plus a few thousands of the tourists. With almost no chance for some conclusive result.

But, of course we can just assume the PJs are fat and lazy, That's easier, no?

The mobile phones towers are owned by the mobile phone service providers.
It is not a big deal for the police to ask for the data, through the court order yes.
I think I read somewhere back in 2007 that PJ did obtain the mobile phone data but this was a tabloid, The Sun or similar and a very short article.

From the McCann files:

PJ files: the McCanns' statements

Witness statement of Kate Marie Healy, on the 6th of September 2007, at 3 p.m.

When asked if she ever slept in Madeleine’s bedroom, she says that such happened on the Wednesday, because she was annoyed with Gerry. He ignored her after dinner when they went to the Tapas bar, which only happened that day. She decided to retaliate by sleeping in the other bedroom, in the bed under the window. She doesn’t know if Gerry noticed this because he was sleeping when she left, and if in fact her husband was aware of this, he made no comment.

I never said PJ was fat and lazy. I said Amaral was incompetent for such huge investigation and not professional enough.
For me PJ doesn't equal Amaral.
And that we are seeing now, a professional modern European police force working on the case using modern policing methods. The way it have should been back in 2007.

Back in 2007 it was said PDL has 1000 habitants, I have now seen the figure of 3000.. so not sure what is the right figure.

Early April is still the low season, not so many tourist.
I know this because I come from a similar town and I know how things work.
What I don't know is how many towers are in PDL.. actually how many towers there were in 2007.
If answer is one, than it is a bad luck..
If answer is two then it is good.
Then moving within catchment areas between two towers can be checked.

If OC is covered by one tower and the beach, Smiths sighting area by another then this is a very good news.

In this case it is possible to check whether there was a mobile phone which was reaching the OC tower and moved to reaching Smiths sighting tower at around 10pm.

Again, all depends on the data they have.. but I think by analysing the mobile phone data a lot can be done..

For example the data can show which mobile phone left the area that night and never came back..

Whenever the PJ are slammed, which is pretty much all the time, I wonder to myself, have these people even so much as cast an eye over the summary of the PJ investigation?

The summary is 57 pages long, the actual report itself is thousands of pages.

The summary lists all the diligences and investigations attempted by the PJ.

It is gob smacking to me at least, how much work went into this case, and how much of what they asked for was not provided.

The McCanns never cooperated, from the first day.

They did investigate other options, does no one remember Murat? Murat that Tanner positively identified as being the abductor? God alone knows how many resources were wasted investigating something we now know, never actually happened.

Anyway here's a link to the summary, and I've copied a portion which I personally believe illustrates exactly how the PJ spent their time and resources. How anyone can say it wasn't thorough, is beyond me.

Thousands of pages and pieces of information...maybe hundreds of thousands. When you consider half of it was caused by the lies of Tanner, it is really really frustrating to read the PJ were incompetent.

Every second wasted on Murat was time that could have been spent actually looking for Madeleine. To think her own parents may have wilfully planned for all of this to happen and sat by when it did, is just horrifying.

A lot of people, I think. that is if there were two different towers.

Anyway it could be fruitless, because the kidnapper could have as well left his phone at home. So, basically you propose here something that requires a lot of time and human resources to be done, and there is very, very low probability that it will be helpful.

Again, all depends on the data they have.. but I think by analysing the mobile phone data a lot can be done..

Jesus. No police on this world, even SY, has the unlimited time and resources, which would be required to check all these pings to find out if someone left and did not come back.

I am not sure if you know what you are talking about. This is of a huge importance for this investigation.

Almost all modern police cases were solved through technology such as this.

In many countries..

Agatha Christie style Amaral used is long gone !!!! Nobody use it any more.. he said this, she said that... o cmon this is just an endless drama...

All of the modern investigations use modern technology to resolve their cases.

For example Joana Yeates killer was caught only because his mobile phone moved to a different tower catchment on a certain bridge. This is how he was caught. Otherwise he would never be caught. And he was a nice neighbour nobody suspected.. But the police had a hard proof... his own mobile phone pings! plus they later checked his internet searches and he used the google map of the place where he left the body before anyone else in the media knew it.. this was evidence against him!

Re. Madeleine's wardrobe - If you looked in through the window it would run along the left hand wall - it is a built-in type. I have seen a pic or diagram in early days.

I am not sure if you know what you are talking about. This is of a huge importance for this investigation.

Almost all modern police cases were solved through technology such as this.

In many countries..

I have heard about cases solved by tracing certain people through pings. I have not heard about a single case solved by checking randomly all the pings in the area. Do you know such a case?

Thousands of pages and pieces of information...maybe hundreds of thousands. When you consider half of it was caused by the lies of Tanner, it is really really frustrating to read the PJ were incompetent.

Every second wasted on Murat was time that could have been spent actually looking for Madeleine. To think her own parents may have wilfully planned for all of this to happen and sat by when it did, is just horrifying.

:pullhair:
There were inconsistencies too with regards to Murat and also Sergey Malinka. Do you think that other possible suspects should be ignored? Particularly, those who had sudden memory lapses concerning meetings and late night phone calls. I also would like to know if Murat really did travel further than what he claimed he did in the rental car he hired a few days after the event. Also, of interest, why he claimed he didn't know how to encrypt files when several were found on his computer and why did he initially claim that he was with Michaela on the evening of the disappearance then later had to say that he wasn't. I'm sure if I trawled through the files I'd find more oddities, with regards to Malinka as well. Much worse, if true that someone reported to the investigation that paedophile material was once seen on his computer by someone.
