“ The Portuguese police is on the trail of An ex-employee of the holiday domain where the McCann family stayed in 2007 when daughter Maddie disappeared there. The man is suspected of complicity in the Maddie McCann case. The night before the disappearance of the British toddler he had several contacts with the German prime suspect Christian Brückner, VRT NWS reports.

The investigators suspect that the new suspect has worked with Christian Brückner, with whom he had several contacts at the time. As an employee in the holiday complex in Praia da Luz, he may have tipped off the German suspect about a suitable time to enter the McCanns' apartment. The man seeking the Portuguese police has historically been linked to sex offenses involving minors in the Algarve region.“

It must be devastating for the McCanns to know that it was probably an inside set up.

Just compounds that guilt for leaving them even more. I can’t imagine how much they carry that. It’s unbearable.

This article appears to build on what all press were saying yesterday. It’s a great article - far more sure of itself. Thank you.

My months with Madeleine | Crime | The Guardian

An interesting article about someone from the hotel at the same time as the McCanns

@JediJim This article you posted from the Guardian by another mother who was staying at the hotel when Madeleine went missing broke my heart. The way she described it all, and Madeleine's parents, is unforgettable. And how obvious it was that the investigation was failing from the start. And at the end when she writes, "The Portuguese police had never asked" (for a statement).

I know it’s supposedly “MSM” but I think we need to exercise more caution and a healthy dose of scepticism when wading through the avalanche that the DM is spewing.

Some people will do and say anything to get in the papers, so to speak, and I’m questioning whether everyone’s motives are necessarily driven by a willingness to help rather than other more cynical factors (like cash or narcissism).

IMO As an employee in the holiday complex he may have had access to keys to the apartment. For all we know the abductor may have just unlocked the front door, walked in and back out again in seconds. JMO

I think the patio doors were already unlocked.

Exactly this.

Lots of speculation and vaguely sourced theories.

I agree.
This is only my second time following a crime on WS: has any seasoned WS'rs ever seen as much newspaper coverage on a suspect as there is on this one? Any advice on how to approach this at this stage?

Also, taking into account the amount of speculation that's being printed about him and the phrase that nearly every news items states " he was investigated" I sincerely hope that he's not been able to fly under the radar for a long time.
That's very frightening and opens up another can of worms.

Either he’s been flying under the radar or he’s the kind of guy who always crops up because of his past and lifestyle - what if he’s a convenient fall guy to pin a load of cold cases on?

Some of the facts seem to be that he's had a troubled and lurid past; previous convictions from a young age including sex crimes; travelled extensively around Europe in a campervan, not settling too long anywhere and was in the areas where some of the crimes took place.

Coupled with his confession - yes. I’d say it warrants serious attention.

I think that because of CB's past, what is known so far about him, I clearly doubt that he's a convenient scapegoat in McCann case.

I remember that in those days, burner phones were easily given to other people without necessarily changing registered name.
Only when smartphones were becoming widespread and phone number portability went in place (I don't remember the exact year) that the shift from one phone-one number to one number-one person operated.
I remember that in 2007, it was the one number-one phone at least where I live.

I am not even surprised that DS not to have the phone because he passed the number to someone else after buying a new phone.

From the limited info we have, I can't tell one way or another about his truthfulness.

Yes, there's a lot of speculation on that point too and questions as to why he's never been convicted for any of them before now.
If he's innocent, I wonder if he would try to sue for all this speculation? Can you under German law? IMO

Lack of solid evidences to bring before Court seems the likeliest for me.

If I were speculated then turned out I was innocent, I would be able to sue in France. But only after a sentence of "Innocent because facts have not happened" or "Innocent because the offence was commited by someone else".
If the verdict is "Innocent for lack of evidence", you can't sue in France.

I can only think that they know enough to know that publicly hanging him like this won’t come back to haunt them - either because he’s guilty of one of more of the crimes or because he has so much to hide otherwise that he wouldn’t initiate his own legal dispute.

At this point so far, I have no idea, and I prefer waiting before making my opinion.

I’m trying to stay unbiased but failing - I really want this to be over for them.

I wish for them too!

About CB saying he'll sue, we have to wait and see. Then I'll be able to make my opinion about him to sue.

That report about the Italian police arresting him under a ruse for something else is sticking in my head. The fact that they thought he was homeless - not the "playboy" image that's been described before, and holding a bible.
It could suggest a turnaround in his character and a possible confession?
Mind you, it also says that he's challenging the extradition to Germany.

I haven't read anywhere where it states that he will sue. I was just speculating as to the probability.
