Which video are you referring to? There are several, most of which have been cut and edited. The interactions of the dog with the toy cat were fully documented on film.
At no point does the dog alert to the toy cat.
I recommend to all to watch the video, and trust what you see in the video.
IMO it is completely evident that the dog does not alert to the toy.
The one linked here is in the residence the McCanns were staying at after MM was abducted (not 5A). In the video, Eddie pulls cuddle cat out of a toy basket but does not bark.
The footage cuts away in the middle of the video (there's an unedited version somewhere but can't find it), during which time it appears someone has now put cuddle cat in a cupboard. Towards the end of the video, Eddie goes to cupboard and makes an alert. The handler opens the cupboard to reveal the teddy hidden inside.
It's not entirely convicing given that Eddie seeminlgy previously ignored the teddy when it was out in the open but I believe this is what the supposed "alert" claim was based on.
Also don't know how they can be sure Eddie wasn't alerting to something else on the cupboard. Unless they are trying to say that he hadn't alerted to anything there previously and only when cuddle cat was placed inside did he alert? Perhaps the handler saw it as unusual that Eddie chose to pick up cuddle cat and saw this as a potential alert even though he didn't give his normal bark? Not altogether convinced but keeping an open mind.
