I doubt very much if any statement made by JT, or any other witness for that matter, is ever analysed in splendid isolation.

The norm when the broader picture is viewed is I believe for investigators is to seek corroboration.
For example – the question is not as you seem to think – did GM and JW deep in conversation see JT walking past on her way to check her children. The question is, did JT see GM and JW.

We know that JT left the tapas table and we know that she confirms the meeting of GM and JW. She saw the pair of them.

What we don’t know is exactly where CB was at that moment in time. As the prime suspect in a murder CB’s whereabouts surely take primacy over a witness statement. Which despite being checked and double checked for over sixteen years and one would have thought having had its share of myth and innuendo exhausted over that period.

Alas! It seems that is not the case. But further slurring a witness who was traumatised by the belief that she saw MM being abducted is not really of the same importance as finding out where the prime suspect was. My opinion

Well that's the point - it isn't collaborated and we know they all discussed their accounts. It just really isn't possible to exactly reconcile her statement with Trottman either - yet somehow the Met came to a broad conclusion

There isn't really any reason to prefer the evidence of JT over GM+JW (2 people).

I think @Janosch is correct - she came by later after they were gone.

Ok so police couldn't find Nicola Bulleys body , that's after a couple of days of her missing, what hope after 16 yrs of a small child's body, just for a bit of context.
they went in the same day I think as she went missing and it was only pure luck she was found.

Hope they have a credible tip and that, if she's there, they find her. Best case scenario of a worst case nightmare -- that she's entombed. Preserved forensics.

I expect this to be police intelligence and not because a suspect was there.
Each search produces high stress in MM's family.

Does anyone else think the timing of this search is a little odd, given the current legal challenges to judicial competence in Germany? BKA have known about CB's stomping grounds for at least 3 years.
Should Madeleine's body be found in the dam (and IMO it won't)
a)would Portugal claim the legal right to prosecute &
b)would all the evidence gathered by Braunschweig be invalid in Portugal if they (Braunschweig) had no jurisdiction?

No. I think they will have been working on identifying the burial site. They will have examined photos, interviewed witnesses and had their psychologist reviewing his writings, correspondence, conversations.

BKA has taken the lead and Portugal won’t take the case from them. Best to have everyone focused on a German paedo in Germany rather than corrupt useless Portuguese police & paedophiles in Portugal.

If there’s a Portuguese accomplice, I assume he couldn’t be prosecuted because he wasn’t made arguido by the 15y limit.

The evidence has been collected by BKA and can be presented in whichever jurisdiction the Higher Court decides.

Does anybody know where was living HB in May 2007?
I remember close to Messines, but not sure.

Pixie, you know the German and British police wouldn't dare call the Portuguese police "corrupt". Both have enough skeletons in their own closets. Calling the Portuguese corrupt is not the best idea if you want cooperation in Portugal?

Call me an old cynic but the next best outcome for Portugal after not convicting the McCanns would be to find CB not guilty in their own courts (thus saving both their reputation and the prospect of having to pay the McCanns substantial compensation). Which country's pathologist would be responsible for a post-mortem should the body be found in Portugal?

They're not going to be paying any compensation when the judiciary in Portugal never had any intention of prosecuting them (as far as we - and you - know).

As we all know the police did not have that power.

Not sure the PJ work that fast, an ILOR first of all then the organising of it all, it was only a month ago the lower court in Brunshweig gave their opinion on jurisdiction.Probably been on the cards for some time,.

I don’t think a successful conviction of CB means Portugal will have to pay the McCanns compensation, why do you think that?

Not sure where HB was at that time but I recall MT saying that CB often used to visit Christian P who lived next to a reservoir about a half hour drive from PDL. It's in JC's book, Jon assumes it's probably Barragem da Bravura he is referring to but Barragem do Arade is about the same distance from PDL, so that could be where CP was staying.

Certainly an interesting development, moreso than the well searches since it appears to have come at the direct request of Germany to look in this area.

Will be interested to see where exactly they conduct the land searches, whether they stay along the banks of the reservoir or go into the forestry as well. If they stay within the confines of the the high water mark, it would suggest they believe MM has gone into the water from the edge and are looking in the silt banks now that the water level is low.

The news say both.

PJ failed in their duty of confidentiality and impartiality and allowing certain allegations made by police against the parents to be treated as facts. As such, I think the McCanns would have a good case against the State of Portugal for compensation.

German news outlet Morgenpost reporting that HCW will be issuing a statement about the search tomorrow.
