So much resource thrown at this.
Somethings off.
That's part of the mystery of MM. Why has so much time, effort and money been thrown at this case ?

IF and it's a big if, they find any remains it'll take some while for DNA extraction if possible to identify the remains, so it'll be some time yet .

Around lunch time, more than 20 officers were digging beside the reservoir. A number of bags have been taken away from the search area, although it is not known what is in them.

Thankyou, that was interesting.

It expanded into an exclusive which indicted that there will be a role for Italy prior to any charges being laid in MM case. unfortunately that is still behind a paywall.
The bit about Italy was from May last year, it also had this below to say which as we know was not true.

BKA prosecutors in Braunschweig have also informed the German suspect’s lawyer of the process to prosecute him for the disappearance of the British three-year-old, while on holiday in Praia da Luz, on the Algarve in 2007.

Really does look like a big search.

Why do large resources mean something’s off?
Probably some people in here wouldn't like to see any productive outcome in the ongoing investigation against this "happy and friendly german guy"...?;)

I dont believe its that. There are many people missing in the Uk and MM is the only one with full time investigators on and meanwhile other people are turned down for searches for their loved ones.

Does sound like the searches are based on something specific rather than the area in general:

Making a statement to German TV channel RTL, German state prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said he could not "give any concrete information" on the clues on which the search operation is based.

"They are not tips that come from the accused... but you can imagine that we don`t start searching somewhere in Portugal on the off chance, but that there must be a good reason for it.

"We do have one, but I ask for your understanding that I cannot disclose it here at the moment for tactical reasons."

Around lunchtime, more than 20 officers were digging beside the reservoir. A number of bags have been taken away from the search area, although it is not known what is in them.
There are reportedly four areas of interest to be searched this week.

Has anyone found the exact place the BKA/PJ/GNR vehicles are?

The scene at the reservoir

This morning at the Arade reservoir there is a hive of police activity.
The area where the search is taking place is tagged as "Parking Arade" on Google Maps.
A dirt track leads to a shaded dirt car park, where there is direct access to the turquoise waters of Barragem do Arade.
Two white tents are the only obvious indication that a search is taking place and the Mirror hiked to a peninsula overlooking the search scene this morning.
We spotted plain-clothed officers — one carrying a large paper bag was seen inspecting the stony shore of the reservoir area shortly after 9 am.
Other officers arrived in three vehicles, parking under the canopy of pine and eucalyptus trees where the main search is taking place.

Was Correiras effort from the past based on Bravura, or Arade? Does somebody know for sure?

It is the case that there are many missing people in the UK.

In my area there is a missing person who was presumed to have been abducted on 23rd April 1976 when he was only three. The only witness being his slightly older sibling who described “a man” opening the garden gate and taking him away.

The case does get reviewed periodically and his family are still looking but the difference between his and MM’s case is that there is no evidence to allow progress to an active case despite extensive police inquiries at the time and since.

That is not the situation as far as MM is concerned. There has always been evidence. There still is evidence and there is a prime suspect who is being investigated.

It has started to rain in the reservoir, surely that makes the search difficult

The police
never just stop looking for anyone of new information or evidence is found it get investigated the only difference in the MM case is media coverage and 16 years on that’s not necessarily a good thing for the MCANNS.

I agree there is a Prime suspect but the BKA are in charge of that and it has been made clear that the Uk are only there in a observatory role. As for anything else its a matter of opinion really. Btw I am sorry about your neighbour.

So who gets to do the nitty gritty of the forensic work ?

It never made sense to me that the parents did this, it just never added up personally.

This is a very interesting development, I reckon they have more evidence than they can talk about publically and really hope it leads to something.

Also this idea that the police are focusing on this case and ignoring other cases is just BS. The police will follow up on any missing persons case if there is new evidence to go on (and regularly do, you just don't hear about it).

This clip shows a summary of search so far …
Haven’t seen any footage of anyone using any ground penetrating sonar / radar equipment .. has anyone else ?
Not sure how these searches are normally conducted .. but I’d expected to see such equipment being used …
