1 week, how they manage all process, where and what they searched, but now it's old past.
Indeed, so old I'm surprised that the subject was even brought up.

It is for police to decide how they will carry out their operational duties, no one else. Portuguese police obviously decided a week was sufficient.
Not being Portuguese, I have no quibble with that.
Portuguese Police should be above criticism then? I don’t think so. Their efforts to physically search for a missing young child were pitiful IMO.

The registration of the vehicle is not suspicious. It is a perfectly normal procedure. IMO
The German police obviously disagree.

No, by Dudley. Post 708
In response to an IMO spurious claim that it was only in the early days that Madeleine’s interests were at the epicentre of the investigation or that the police cared about what happened to her.

The last notable police activity in the MM case was the three pronged police search of the Arade reservoir. Which was an area frequently visited by CB in his camper van.

According to the Guardian this was prompted by study of illicit material dug up from underneath the body of his dog in a 2016 excavation of CB's property. This was during the search for another missing child.

Snip
The German police have only said that “indications” and “tips” led them to seek the search but it has been suggested that photographs found in 2016 had provided evidence that CB .had regularly visited the reservoir which he is said to have described as “my little paradise”.
Snip
HCW, whose force requested the operation, said there would be a period of silence.
HCW said that as the accused had not yet had access to the files, the authorities would not yet publish any new evidence that might implicate CB, a German national who was the prime suspect in MM’s disappearance.
Snip
HCW said they had a search warrant for a specific area, which had to be searched in its entirety. He said: “If we don’t find anything, we will certainly tell you quickly.”

The fact is that we have heard nothing about the result of the search so two things spring to mind
  • the German prosecutor said there would be no announcement of evidence recovered as that might be prejudicial to CB
  • if nothing was found we would be told quickly
Nobody has told us anything so the implication has to be that something evidential was found. How long does forensic testing take these days?

IIRC the MM search and subsequent investigation was the largest in Portugals history. The idea vast resources were not invested to find her isn’t supported by any evidence.

In fact the opposite. Far more resources were invested to find a non resident that for comparable local cases down the years.

Furthermore the idea she was not looked for because PJ preferred alternate theories is not true. The early weeks were dominated by the Tanner sighting and a key suspect RM.

Sooner?! When? Should have they announced any relevant finding weekly?
There is a paper trail, so from that imo , it's not unusual for a German national to rereregister a German car, if not at the time I'm sure it would have been picked up. As it was the BKA were only interested in its (car) movements prior to 3/05/2007.

FF told us about forensic results, watch the recent beeb docu.

The most current information we have regarding the search for MM is the search of the Arade reservoir.

There is a direct link between CB the police prime suspect in the murder of MM and this area which only became apparent when a member of CB's criminal fraternity.

Relevant to the present search is the following

Snip
It is not the first time the reservoir has been searched as part of the investigation.
In 2008, Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia paid for specialist divers to check the waterway after he claimed to have been tipped off by criminal contacts that Madeleine's body was in the reservoir.

This endeavour was ridiculed at the time. To this day it is ridiculed in certain dark corners of the internet. The lawyer who used his own money to finance the search for this missing little girl was pilloried then and throughout and ever since by some who will not accept that there is an answer to what happened to MM.

The search of the reservoir in 2008 now doesn't seem so far fetched as ridicule said it was. Perhaps just another missed opportunity for MM but a thread connecting CB to Luz and the kidnap of another little girl from the area.

IIRC the previous search was elsewhere?

There was also reporting of search at same reservoir .. Arade .. in 2008 ..

Then was focused more in the water it seems ,, but recent search was concentrating on a specific area of land ..

I don't know if the criminal source who contacted the Portuguese lawyer MAC about the location of MM's remains is one and the same as the informant who later on passed CB's name to the police.

But what I do know is that the water search carried out and paid for by MAC in 2008 is the same as the reservoir where a police search targeted an area to dig on land as well as underwater.

Snip
Refusing to reveal his sources, MAC said: "They indicated that she was abducted, raped and murdered within the first two days and her body thrown into a lake in the Algarve."

MAC believes MM's body is lying at the bottom of the massive Barragem do Arade reservoir, near Silves, some 40 miles from Praia da Luz, where MM, three at the time, was last seen alive.

MAC travelled to several lakes before arriving at the Barragem do Arade and was astonished by the accuracy of the description.

He said: "I knew instantly it had to be the right place. It corresponded perfectly to that description"

The lawyer called for the police to trawl it and said he first passed his information to officers in May.

But when it appeared nothing was done, he travelled to the Algarve himself in December to investigate.

The 2008 private search is reflected in the 2023 police search. The 2008 private search was conducted as the direct result of information from a criminal source.
We really do not know what prompted the 2023 police search in the same location on behalf of the same victim. But they know. And they know what if anything was found there.

Apart from the fact that CB remains the prime suspect in MM's disappearance and shouting "what a co-incidence!" somebody out there knew enough to indicate the location to MAC in 2008.
There is discussion mileage in that for interested sleuths. I won't hold my breath.
My opinion

It seems clear that neither the PJ nor the McCanns saw fit to contribute to the 2008 search so presumably they both considered the tip off to be of dubious provenance.
