Maglite

I think her brother's friend had his way with her and killed her, the brother right there seeing everything so a party to the murder, and the parents, realizing the way it would affect the son's life in the future, did major coverup to protect him.

I think that is a good possibility, Scandi. I go further to add that IF the brother were involved in any way, I believe that everything done by the Rs from then to this day is/was to keep the brother from actually realizing that he had any part in her death. IOW, protect him from his own thoughts that he may have actually done this or been a party to it, and if this is the situation, then to this very day he thinks an intruder actually broke in and murdered his sister.

Of course, I jump from one side of the fence to the other daily.

Maybe the intrude took their flashlight by mistake.

Unlikely. It is not like there is only one brand of flashlight for sale in America, and only one model of that one brand. The odds are very unlikely that a person from outside the house would have bought the same brand and model flashlight the Ramseys owned, especially when Maglites in general are more expensive than the little hardware store or supermarket brands you can get (an important consideration in the theory of an intruder who planned to kidnap for profit; a kidnapper does not go out of his way to spend more money than he needs to in the course of trying to make some), and larger sizes of Maglite are more expensive than smaller-but-equally-effective Maglite models.

The lack of prints on the maglite has always been a good piece of evidence (not to be discounted). It seems more likely that the Rams would have used it to avoid turning on the house lights and wiped it down to eliminate evidence. An intruder would of course use a flashlight also, but, an intruder would not need to wipe it down and could easily have taken it with him and discarded it anywhere.
Unless of course, an intruder wanted to frame the Rams. Wildly cunning but not far off the mark of cunning illustrated in the movie "Ricochet". Since the RN had movie some references and the business magazine was marked up like the paper in the movie Ricochet, it starts to seem like a pattern of subtle clues. I would find that difficult for the Rams to stage and more likely it was an intruder who was consistently obsessed with revenge, stalking, and framing.

And then again, maybe the RN is just getting us off on a wild goose chase by reading too much between the lines. Kind of like what it was intended to do anyway.

How do you know this? Is there a kidnappers official guide that I've missed?

Maybe it was on sale. Blue light special at Kmart?
Hey maybe someone can find some old sale ads on maglights to see if they were on sale in 1996. Two for one maybe?
It's a longshot but maybe our kidnapper is also a shoplifter? So maybe it was a five finger discount maglight.
Maybe he found it at some other house he/she broke into.
Could it of been a gift?

C'mon, Zman. The killer of JBR would never steal a flashlight, or black duct tape, or the cord used to tie up JBR. The killer of JBR pretty much never broke the law before, up until that night, remember? (lol).

Patsy said the flashlight looked like thiers in an interview when she was shown a picture of it sitting on the counter top but she also noted it looked dirty and theirs was clean and kept in a drawer. She was told by the BPD that she was seeing fingerprint dust on it. Wouldn't the fingerprinting be done at the evidence lab? It seems odd to me that it would be sitting on the counter with fingerprint dust on it.

John also said it LOOKED like theirs but he couldn't say for sure. I have to say I can't blame him for saying that. How could he know if it was his or not from a photograph?

I think they both said it should have been in the drawer where it was normally kept and not on the counter top.

Oh yeah you're right about that. I wonder if they were in the process of moving when this interview happened? I know they said Jonbenets things were still in boxes from the move from the house in Boulder. Maybe the flashlight in question could've been packed and not unpacked yet? I'm just going over possibilities in my head. I really do believe it was the Ramseys flashlight on that counter top.

I'm not sure Aussiegran, I think maybe it was just JonBenet that had one but I'm not 100% sure. Maybe someone else knows, bumping this in case they do.
