A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the capital of Vanatu, Port Vila, on December 16, 2024 causing substantial damage.A building hosting foreign missions including the embassies of the U.S, France, the UK, and New Zealand had buckled windows and collapsed concrete pillars. The road connecting the capital to its main port was blocked by landslides. Communication outages were reported across the country. A tsunami warning was issued for Vanatu, but it was later cancelled.

That area has a lot of underwater volcanic and seismic activity. You can see the quake on this live seismograph from Nebraska. Each circuit of the paper takes 20 minutes.
