Yes, but the first debris of AF-447 were spotted within 1 or 2 days after it crashed into the ocean.

Malaysia unclear on direction of missing jet; no scenario ruled out

More than four days after a Malaysian jetliner went missing on route to Beijing, authorities acknowledged Wednesday they didn't know in which direction the plane and its 239 passengers was heading when it disappeared, vastly complicating efforts to find it.

Authorities have not ruled out any possible cause, including mechanical failure, pilot error, sabotage or terrorism in the disappearance of the plane. The 777 is a modern aircraft with an excellent safety record, as does Malaysia Airlines.

Correct, but wasn't Malaysian Air following it on their own system also?

maybe....

but the radar released was from civilian radar operators.

(you do not need a subscription to check a flight on flightradar24... I use it all the time when Mr. Nurse travels to China for business)

Im on Tomnod this morning and what I am finding is the lack of boats.. I mean where is everyone? Did people just stop looking?

did you see the article I posted about Vietnam? They are frustrated with the lack of data and are pulling back some of their fleet until there is more credible search data released by Malaysia.... (plus it is dark now as well.. they are 12 hours ahead)

Adding to the confusion, Indonesia air force Col. Umar Fathur said the country had received official information from Malaysian authorities that the plane was above the South China Sea, about 10 nautical miles from Kota Bharu, Malaysia, when it turned back toward the strait and then disappeared. That would place its last confirmed position closer to Malaysia than has previously been publicly disclosed.

isn't it 9:30 p.m. there?

The satellite images on TomNod aren't realtime. They're from a few days ago. The capacity to watch real-time satellite feed is right now only in the hands of the military - way too expensive also, even if available/shared.

So keep that in mind: it's not current. (DH explained this when watching '24' - and I asked why we couldn't use real-time satellite to find people and solve crimes like they did... :o)

ETA: Well, I could be wrong about this one - but the date on my images from TomNod say 3/9/2014 in the bottom corner:

Barrington said thousands of people are also helping in real time to scan through the images.

This is so mystifying. Hope it is found soon. The lack of clarity is astounding.

Malaysia Airlines flight 370 ... fell off civilian radar screens at 1.30am, about 35,000ft above the Gulf of Thailand between Malaysia and southern Vietnam. It sent no distress signals or any indication that it was experiencing problems.

Malaysian authorities have since said air defence radar picked up traces of what might have been the plane turning back and flying until it reached the Strait of Malacca, a busy shipping lane west of the narrow nation 250 miles from the plane’s last known co-ordinates.

Military and government officials today said American experts, and the manufacturer of the radar systems, were examining that data to confirm it showed the Boeing 777. Until then, they said the search would continue on both sides of the country, with an equal focus.

Well well - so technology does exist now to view imagery in real time. That is pretty cool and pretty scary at the same time.

“Until now, it’s not been realistic to use them in real time [for searches] unless you were a government agency,” said Jeff Glickman, a nationally-recognized Seattle-area satellite image analyst. “What’s changed in the last year is the development of certain polar orbiting commercial satellites capable of scanning the earth quickly. We’re at a tipping point where you could catch a water craft on an image at least once a day.”

Malaysia says signal of unidentified object detected as search for missing jet further expanded

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/world/2014-03/12/c_133181460.htm

Malaysian Air Force Chief Rodzali Daud told reporters here in a press conference that the signal was detected by the military radar at 2:15 a.m. on Saturday about 200 miles (320 km) northwest of Penang island.

"I am not saying it's flight MH370. We are still corroborating this. It was an unidentifiable plot," he said.

When asked by Xinhua about reports that dead bodies were found near Penang, he said he could not verify this.

When I heard Vietnam was pulling back I suspected that was the reason.

This is what we are looking for, unfortunately it's a search for these devices ultimately. Air France 447 took 2 1/2 years to find, so wouldn't be surprised if this takes longer.

These are the 777's Flight Recorders, made by Honeywell and are Solid State Memory.
