U.S. Spy Satellites Detected No Explosion as Flight 370 Vanished
By Robert Windrem
U.S. spy satellites did not detect a midair explosion at the time that Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 lost contact with air traffic controllers or in the hours immediately afterward, senior U.S. intelligence officials told NBC News on Wednesday.

...The U.S. Space Based Infrared (SBIR) satellite system, which is designed to identify heat signatures in real time, can -– and has -– detected exploding aircraft, according to a second official,. Indeed, it has provided evidence in the past of events as small as artillery fire and the launch of anti-aircraft missiles, the official said.

In my mind, this rules out one possibility.

Question, I'm sure you guys already covered this, any mention of passengers' phone's last pings? Would everyone's phones have been off during this time? TIA

BBM

And herein lies the difference. The world is used to the way the NTSB and other major agencies for transportation safety handle these sorts of investigation. There is no such centralized agency handling this investigation.
In a typical NTSB handled crash, they get a tremendous amount of info, very little of it is pertinent to the actual event and much of it seemingly conflicts. They sift the information and release it only when it becomes vetted and verified and proven to be pertinent to the event.
What we are hearing is the unfiltered, unvetted and seemingly conflicting data that normally we wouldn't hear. Different agencies within Malaysia saying different things due to different motivations. Of course the military does not want to give out too much info. Of course the airline wants the terrorism angle to be spotlighted (it takes the blame away from them). Of course the government actually has little clue.
So, what appears to us as utter chaos is indeed that, but really in most investigations the data is very chaotic, we just don't get to see much of it undigested and summarized neatly.

Is Malaysia over its head on this? Most likely. Have they asked for assistance - yes - they actually asked the US to look over the radar reports early on (I think by Monday at the latest). Is the US blabbing every little detail - NO! They are very, very quiet. I think this is truly a difficult mystery, the right people are working on it, and because of the unique problems posed by the part of the world it is located in, the investigation is definitely sub-par. China would have the best resources to figure it out, but politically it is isolated here. The US is having to tread lightly because of the same sensitive political reasons.

Try to imagine if a Cuban military jet crashed off the coast of Florida in 1970. How much info about what the US tracked, and what Cuba tracked would be shared with an investigation. Would we want them to know what we were capable of detecting? Would they want us to know? Now picture this, with 5 nations, none of which are best of buddies...

 Post of the day

Oh Geeze..... On CNN the anchor lady was asking her guest if we should be alarmed by the pilot's last words - "Alright, Good night" He says no of course, just sounds like he was being polite.

What is she thinking is so alarming about that? Good grief.

That's funny. An anchor lady should know most international speak this way. I deal at work sometimes with international peoples and I get a chuckle out of the way they speak/type English.

Guys can we PLEASE stay on track here? I know its difficult, with the lack of cooperation from Malaysia, but its hard to read when there are jokes being posted on this thread. This is certainly not a joke, although it is equally frustrating with the lack of evidence. However we must keep in mind that there is a possibility of family members reading these boards, and I am sure they would be very upset with reading the jokes on this thread. There are other places to joke around. This thread is not one of them.

So now it is 2:40 a.m. over there - another day passes - and nothing! One thing I've figured out - unlike many disappearances and court trials that I have followed here - I can just go to work, come home, click on "last page", and I haven't missed anything!

Things have been stated and then retracted and proven and then disproven, etc. etc. Such a mess! And I am just an interested person - I cannot imagine the pain this is causing the families!!

I do go back and read several pages but conclude that "Nope - no real news"! Anyway...I'm here to sift through the lack of information with all of you :)

Agreed, and the US is not the only nation with eyes in the sky.

I believe there is much more information available.

Cool stuff.

Now if they could just zoom in to see who snatches up our missing and abducted kids off the street we would have it made. The CIA or NSA can likely do that, but just don't want anyone to know.

The letter from the guy on the rig was authenticated.

Wonder how soft the sea floor is in that area and if it is possible the plane is buried under it.

Respectfully snipped

I think that is exactly why there is so much conflicting information!

Indeed. IMO, IF there's any kind of conspiracy here, it has to do with strategic geographic and political control over these waters / and/or international relations.

< Now if there were any RSOs on this plane, we'd definitely get to the bottom of all of this here at WS. >

After receiving the letter Vietnamese teams reportedly searched the area but found nothing.
The search for the plane expanded to cover the Strait of Malacca Tuesday after reports the Malaysian Military may have picked up radar traces of the plane heading in the opposite direction from takeoff toward Malaysia’s west coast.
Authorities report that evidence has since come under doubt, with no new leads reported as of noon Wednesday.
