THE HAGUE, July 25 — The Netherlands is sending 40 unarmed police to the crash site of flight MH17 in rebel-held Ukraine and seeking means to “further stabilise the area”, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said yesterday.

“We’re examining means to further stabilise the surroundings... it requires international discussions, it requires a legal mandate,” Rutte said, amid growing concern that the site has not been secured and all of the 298 bodies, most of them Dutch, not recovered.

“It’s absolutely not certain that this is all going to work. It’s very complex and requires many partners,” Rutte told journalists

A bit more from Gen. Dempsey speaking at a security forum in Aspen:

Russian military likely reluctant participants in Ukraine-US general

(Reuters) - Russia's military is likely a reluctant participant in Ukraine's conflict, the top U.S. military officer said on Thursday, adding that although he had not spoken to his Moscow counterpart in about two months he was keeping an open line of communication.

"I think the Russian military and its leaders that I know are probably somewhat reluctant participants in this form of warfare," General Martin Dempsey said, noting Russia's use of both conventional forces along the border and of proxies inside the country.

A five nation coalition lead by the Dutch, including Australia, Germany, Malaysia and Britain will send armed troops to back up security at MH17 crash site. Australia will send more Federal Police to assist as well.

:gasp: Oh boy ... here we go. Let's hope the strategy works, and that "his excellency Mr Borodai" (and the Russians who are firing over the border) will just back off and let us gather all remaining bodies, investigate, and remove the plane and its parts. :crossfingers:

I notice in the article that you linked above ...

Mr Houston has reportedly told Prime Minister Tony Abbott that an international investigation of the full crash site covering as much as 50 square kilometres was needed to ensure all human remains were recovered.

And .....

We must secure the site of the crash,” Ms Bishop said. “We must ensure that the investigators and those that have the gruesome task of identifying body remains are able to do that in safety, unfettered without any tampering from anyone.”

I guess something decisive had to happen, and happen soon. Even the Ukraine emergency services have been sent from the site.

'They took away our tents, the ones which were at our base camp,' Serhiy Bochkovsky, the head of the emergencies service, told a news conference in the eastern city of Kharkiv from where the remains of the victims are starting their journey home.
'We were allowed only our equipment and machinery and we were chased away at gunpoint.'
He did not say when this happened.

Vladimir Putin employs a full-time food taster to ensure his meals aren't poisoned

"If you were Vladimir Putin, you could be forgiven for feeling a little paranoid right now, as the Western world takes turns to blame, excoriate, vilify and condemn you over the Malaysian airline disaster. You might well wonder whether a bullet, a Jiffy bag full of ricin or a lunchtime polonium sandwich were most likely to be the means of your imminent dispatch from this life. So it's no surprise to learn that the Russian president employs a professional food taster on his full-time staff.

The news emerged from this week's meeting in London of the Club des Chefs des Chefs, the members of which prepare meals for heads of state and world leaders."
