Q about Noras condition
A 2 hemisphere of brain fuse together or brain is smaller. Nora can’t breathe well her nasal passages are too close together. She has only one frontal tooth, but a dental surgeon made it look like two. Her brain isn’t fused, she had a smaller brain.
Q condition at 15- physical problems
A physically well and able from a basic POV, but struggled with balance and coordination if she ran or moved quickly it was difficult with an awkward gait. She would fall or stumble in areas not flat or straight. Can’t swim easily or anything else that requires balance. Could climb a little bit at a play park, but not an adventure trail or obstacle course. Her hands, had OT at times to help. It’s like she wears rubber gloves all the time. She struggles to hold anything, move anything with force. Holds hands at funny angle sometimes. Writing couldn’t write, it was like a small child. She couldn’t write more than a sentence. Couldn’t manage zips or buttons with ease or out her hands behind her back, couldn’t twist an object with force, she couldn’t manage a phone or hold a phone close to her ear. They used video chat as hand to mouth difficult. Her core strength tired easily from just sitting. Just to stay sitting required a lot of effort. Mum took her regularly to osteopathy to help her tiredness levels. Get nervous system was dtruined from everyday activity and suffered from night time wetting. Not constant, but regular. Week before holiday she had bed wet a lot. She had mild hearing difficulty and wore a hearing aid at school. It was when busy or lots of people speaking. Not worn when she disappeared. Nora could hear parents calling in the house, mum didn’t think it was relevant.
Q she attended a specialist school, tell us about that
A attended school for moderate learning difficulties. She could express herself well at home with familiar people with basic concepts. Could not relate to anything abstract, conceptual, imaginary, she had to experience something to talk about it. Could count, but couldn’t do basic maths not even 2 +3. She learnt basic addition through rite, but didn’t understand money. She had a good memory, remembered facts well, but couldn’t explain things. Couldn’t play games over age 6, anything that required calculation were impossible. A lot of things Nora needed basic help with, 1 instruction at once. At school she could learn basic stories, studied simple sentence structure, that was the maximum. Those were her basic intellectual things, we used to explain that she had a mental age of 5 or 6. For somethings she could relate at an older age with her siblings, things she was familiar with. From a school age perspective that was her limit.
Q from a POV of independence, what was her relationship with you in that regard?
A very dependent wasn’t autonomous for most things in her life. She could get herself dressed as long as it didn’t involve difficult items of clothing eg tying something behind her back she would need help. She needed help with her hair, I brushed her hair everyday. She could have a basic shower and wash herself with soap, she couldn’t wash her hair. She could put shampoo on, but couldn’t wash it off. Daily showers required support. Brushing teeth she could manage, but not confidently. We supported with that. We always bought her shoes with Velcro because she couldn’t do laces. She could put her own shoes on, because they were adapted. Nora didn’t do anything at home without my help, if we did a family activity she would be sitting beside me or her dad, she’d often immediately be turning to me for help. She never went anywhere herself. To go to school a taxi collected her everyday, she only had to walk the length of a car, just a few paces because she couldn’t manage a more autonomous form of transport. For most daily activities Nora needed my help in some way. She could eat independently with a fork, but she couldn’t use a knife. We had to cut her food for her, I’m trying to think of other basic activities she would have needed my help for, but basically almost everything.

IMO Nora was attracted by the forest and its magical qualities and got lost.

Q her confidence levels for instance around people outside of her immediate family situation
A extremely shy and nervous child so I mean she knew my parents and my siblings and their partners very well and very familiar and comfortable with them beyond that Nora was deeply nervous and really would not ever speak to any individual easily even people she known for a long time her standard response to people she wouldn't reply that she would often drop her head and stare at the floor and Nora I believe always thought if I can't see them and it was like she wanted to block people from her mind she was too scared to even have basic conversation with even familiar people so she was easily easily intimidated and very quickly overwhelmed and frequently meet a question from me will you try or would you do response would often be a can’t or I can't do that so we know that she approached most situations with extreme extreme nervousness the other thing was I think it's important about Nora particularly in areas she was less familiar was Nora Nora was not curious she relied exclusively on what was familiar and experienced so she didn't want to try anything she didn't already know before and certainly not without me there to hold her hand she did not wonder about other places she never went to the shops by herself she didn't ask about going anywhere she spent most of her time at home with people she knew well or as when she first went to school she was extremely shy and quiet and struggled to participate in class that gradually improved in her school classes are just sizes of 10 or 11 she was comfortable with those children with that again she would be very shy very very reticent always.

A. we were extremely close every day together except when she was at school and I was at work all day every day together
Q. sorry just to take you back to the decision to go on holiday family holiday in Malaysia what made you choose Malaysia
A well two main reasons my brother lived in Singapore we had taken the children to visit him in Singapore two years prior we spent a few days with us as a family together children absolutely loved that experience they were very excited, we spent most of our family holidays with and close to other family members in fact we went once or twice to other places I'm very close the five of us as a family together and the children absolutely loved that experience very excited I am Irish and my husband is French and they were used to travelling on holidays with other family members in fact we went once or twice alone then always with the rest of our family so this trip to Singapore was again a family trip to spend time with my brother with him I am very close and of course the children enjoyed that and also being with different people and we wanted to repeat that experience and so I looked for family friendly destinations in nearby Malaysia we had some family friends some friends of mine who were able to talk to us about Malaysia. they talked a lot about how they holiday there with their young children in fact they recommended the Dusun to us and I suppose the second was that I had the opportunity to go to Asia I needed to be in Australia and actually Singapore for a few days which is why I met the rest of the family in the region and joined the family from Singapore flight from London

Q. so the holiday was was it intended to be done a mixture of different locations
A yes we were intending to stay at the Dusun for three nights we had intended to spend three nights at the Dusun followed by two nights in Kuala Lumpur followed by I think a couple of evenings in Georgetown and then it was one other islands before flying directly to Singapore and having 4 nights five days
Q so as you said you went first I believe to Singapore for work reasons
A 1st to Sydney went to Singapore and the arrangement was to meet your husband and the three children at the airport that's correct
Q just for the sake of completeness can you give us the names of your husband and the children and the ages that they were at the time
A so my husband's name is Sebastian at the time Innes would have been 12 and Morris would've been 8 at the time and Nora would of been 15
Q And so we've seen some video in fact if you are meeting together at the airport
A yes
Q and you were then collected by a taxi driver is that right
A that's that's correct
Q and he proceeded to the dusun resort was it as you expected it to be when you arrived at the Dusun was there anything not as it anticipated
A I would say not quite the general resort area was as I expected photographs on the website of the pool area and that did look more or less like what I expected perhaps a little smaller but not in any way anything that I was surprised by when we got to our chalet the sora house over the course of the first afternoon there I did think that the chalet was not what I had expected not for the amount of money that was costing to stay there. I had understood that it would be of a higher standing I noticed things like marks on the walls and just a general sense that the house was a little worn I needed but I would call a bout a bit of a refresh nothing more serious than that in all honesty in terms of my first impressions surprised by that I just I felt it looked like it had been decorated in awhile.
Q You have arrived at the resort and who did you meet when you arrived at the resort
A the first person I noticed was Haneem and her children from memory I think that she was sitting on the steps just in front of where the cars arrive with her youngest child. I love children and the young child. we were then immediately greeted by another lady employee. I didn't know who was who at this point she was able to show us to sora house which she did very quickly took us across the cafeteria across the pool area to the sora house so we saw very little I suppose in that first hour of being there and she spent sometime just explaining how things worked at the resort and some practical basic information that we went through with her and then we were left to our own devices.
Q And did she explain to you that it was possible to arrange walks and hikes in the jungle
A she didn't explain that to me I proactively enquired I had spent time on the website and talked about various activities that were possible from the resort and I immediately thought that a walk would be good because as a family we love walking on the weekends we are very urban environment here in London but we live near parks and we often go for an hours walk in the park together and I thought a walk in nature would be a nice thing for us to to do as always manage but Nora was quite good at walking as long as I was with her and it wasn't too complex and it said on the website it was suitable for children from eight upwards so I thought you know definitely not too difficult with my help we would be able to manage it so I was going to do that and I asked about whether that was possible and suitable for families and I was told yes absolutely and so we tentatively booked at that as an activity on the Monday so not the day after arrival in the morning after that.

Everyone was very tired I was very tired I had not had an easy time sleeping from my trip to Australia and I don't know was suffering from a greater than usual levels of jetlag and the children because they really didn't get much sleep on the plane, so we had no ambition for the first day, just acclimatising to the heat and our surroundings and also read on the website that there were some basic trails within the resort itself so we thought we would just stay at the resort stretch our legs and stay doing some quiet activities so we went to the pool we were Uncomfortable after the journey and we had a short swim in the pool next to the sora house so the top pool as I call it. then we had some lunch we had pre-booked lunch and dinner for the first day with the resort we had some lunch everyone needed a rest after that so we had a short siesta the children in the mezzanine where they were to sleep I rested on the sofa i don't know probably for 30 minutes, Sebastian slept in the bed. We Decided we will go for a walk and we wanted to just explore the trails that were within the resort so we did that and it was a bit tricky quite quickly when you go onto one of the trials that the path becomes less flat it's it's quite tricky and within just a few moments Nora fell badly actually she was hurt she fell on her right hip and she sustained a very large bruise from that and she was a bit upset so after that I held her hand for the remainder of the walk and we didn't go far we walked for about 30 minutes around the resort very slowly because we were quite surprised at the designated trails so we wanted to see we want to see animals our children usually like that so we went to the deer park, but we couldn’t see any. We basically did a small loop within the resort. And after Nora was quite fed up actually she really didn't want to do any anything else but the children want to, the other children wanted to go for another swim so we decided we would go to the second bigger pool. There was no one at the pool apart from Helen the owner of the resort with her grandchildren and they quickly left, so we were alone. Nora was Quite tired at this point didn't really want to stay in the water so I was pulling her along in the water just to help her relax probably spent about 20 minutes in the pool at the most and then other children decided to stay with my husband and I took Nora back up to the chalet. We, Nora and I noticed that there was a little reflexology circle beside the sora house and I love reflexology so I was walking around for a little bit on that and you know it was quite painful on my feet and nora was laughing about it and she didn't want to try it of course but she was watching me and it was a short period of time spent there and we went to get ready it took a while because her hair was a bit tangled so spent quite a bit of time just getting Nora organised for the evening really. Then the others came back They had showers and then we had ordered a barbecue for the evening and so Sebastian was looking after that and getting it ready and I was playing games and little basic card games with the children on the balcony again i was very aware that Nora was tired and I remember her being so very by my side we probably spent maybe up to an hour doing that together, ate dinner and we then talked about how excited we were to be on holiday but we haven't at this stage we haven't told the children anything about the rest of the trip and we didn't talk about what we were going to do, just chatting and then they were so exhausted they decided they wanted to go to bed immediately and I was quite relieved because Sebastian I also wanted to go to bed immediately so we brought them I brought them up to the mezzanine level and they said goodnight to their dad. I remember trying to persuade all three of them to put on pyjamas, but it was too hot. It was incredibly hot that first night and they all refused completely to wear any clothes so they all slept in just your underwear which is unusual normally they wore pyjamas but it was so hot They just had underwear on and on as normal I tucked them up individually one at a time in bed and cuddled them all as usual and turned out the light and went downstairs. I honestly I think they fell asleep within seconds of all of that there was not a single noise from the children from that point onwards I think they closed their eyes and went straight to sleep
Q. and what time in the evening was that?
A That was around 10 and I remember checking my watch and thinking that will be an early night, but that’s good. Much better form the next day and Sebastian had already gone into the bedroom to sleep at that point and it was then that I noticed for the first time problem with the windows. I was trying to lock up for the evening I've locked the front door and there was three windows along the side of the chalet.

"As we did (the identification), we saw Nora’s feet and we noticed that her feet didn’t seem to be particularly damaged, in fact, (they looked) the same, just dirty.

"And as I‘d like to think how it's possible, since the police told us Nora had been on the move for seven days, and they couldn’t find (her). How is it possible, compatible with the state of Nora’s feet,” he said.

Already gone into the bedroom to sleep at that point and it was then that I noticed that for the first time it was a problem with the windows I was trying to lock up for the evening I've locked the front door and there was three windows along the side of the chalet open when we got there I had particularly they were all open closing up for the night and I at that point there was no latch on the windows I couldn't close it easily and I had to use my fingernails to grab on the ledge the outer casing of the window to pull each window shut which I did but I couldn't secure it and anyway and I was aware that it was broken that wasn't normal and that after 7 pm there was no external staff on the premises at least that's what you're told not to contact anyone after 7 pm so I didn't think I could do anything about that. So to close that, I could which was basically fully closed, just not secure and then I went to bed and went to sleep.
Q when you say not secure do you mean not locked or not locked normally?
A I suppose that type of window which I was familiar with the windows were a bit like the windows in the house where I grew up you would have like a metal casing around the window frame and on the side a secure lock and so when it was secure the latch was down and you couldn't separate the window that wasn't possible because the latch was missing. Two sides of the window were closed/together but there was probably a minuscule gap because I couldn't use the lock to create the pressure to actually secure the two sides and shut it. The left side it doesn't ever open and then the right hand side of the window is the bit that opens and it opens outwards so I was pulling into Close. It was the same across all three windows by the way.
Q would it have been possible to open that window from the outside?
A oh yes you would it wouldn't fact it would've been very easy to open it from the outside
Q I wonder if it's possible to share the photographs of the storehouse just to have a more detailed idea of what we are looking at.
A yes I see photograph five that was that was the condition, although afterwards the following day and I had signalled that we noticed an open window, a member of the resort stuff tried to fix the window so it was subsequently tampered with but otherwise yes that was how the window was. (1:07has the photograph visible)
Q so photographs said it illustrates that the window is some way off the ground
A yes, it was about waist height.
Q while we've got these photographs can I just ask you to help us to understand the layout of the sora house and you said earlier that yourself and Nora had a shower
A yes
Q following your swim where about which bathroom did you use can you can you help us to understand from the photograph from inside the sora house yes sorry could we put up on the screen photograph does that help in terms of where everything is (photo shown 1:08)
A So you can see on my right-the open front door, yes so when you coming to the kitchen and living area, in the near corner the edge of the brown sofa, the area is fully open but if you turn immediately right that leads to, the next door immediately on the right hand side is a sliding door it's very heavy thick door actually and I remember being struck by that because I closed that door on the first evening to block out the streetlamps that were bothering me and obviously yes, but anyway from that room is another sliding door into the principal bathroom or if you went past that first sliding door immediately on your right again was another sliding door to the bathroom and the bathroom consisted of a toilet sink and shower area it was the only bathroom we ever used the first door that you see just immediately by the spiral staircase on your right that's a toilet we never used it because it if I'm honest it smells bad smells like it wasn't clean, so I remember opening the door of it on the first day, so none of us use that toilet and it was just a small toilet room. we only use the bigger bathroom .
Q so the window that was from the photograph 12 yes the window that you close but wasn't secured at 10 o'clock would've been the other side of the room that's correct
A yes directly opposite the front door and there are three windows. The window was at the level more or less of the front door the others were further along and that you asked a moment ago from the outside and I'm guessing my waist height of the other windows from the inside they wouldn’t have been higher or lower but they were inaccessible from the outside because except for the first window, but then took a significant step downwards from there the house was the front of the house was suspended if you like over the terrain.
Q can you just describe photos 14 and 15 what we are looking at there (photos not clearly shown)
A Sorry can we thank you 14 and 15is the most clearly in this picture is the double mattress to the right hand side of the picture that is where Nora and Innes slept on the first evening and then to the left of that is a single mattress Nora slept on the double mattress. you can just see in 15 the top of the spiral staircase as it opens into that area it is rather small.
Q and then so just returning if we come to the window At 10 o'clock at night you close the window but it wasn't secure when you woke the next morning In what position was the window ?
A as you see it in photograph five I would say it wasn't quite as pushed back as it is in the photograph, it was closer to the wall, but quite obviously wide open.
Q so let's just discuss then the events of that night as you say you went to bed around 10 o'clock did you wake at all in the night was there anything that you heard or were aware off during that night
A yes to an extent, I think I slept quite heavily But it was quite a deep sleep where you are aware of certain things without really being fully aware deep deep sleep all the time I was a bit confused. I was aware of voices outside On their way back to their chalet there was voices moving across the front of the chalet and down towards their area . there was some muffled voices from the bottom of the resort. I think they were a group of young people staying, I think they were having a bit of a party and while the dusun is very clear that it’s quiet eco-friendly I was aware of them and then I fell into a deep sleep. After that at one point I remember I wanted to get up to go to the bathroom but I didn't because I thought I'd wake up and I was so worried about you get another evening in a row I didn't leave at any point and then I do also remember a voice and like a movement, possibly moving furniture around it sounded like it was a conversation happening but in very whispered voice it was hard to make out speech or anything like that I just remember thinking oh that feels different to the voices I heard earlier and that was it in all honesty. I was in such a state of status in between conscious and unconscious that I didn't really react beyond that I just thought I was just like a feeling that there was someone close but not not more than that and then I slept deeply until around 6 am and then my sleep was a bit on off for another hour or so and then eventually I still felt really tired and eventually around 730 I was aware that Sebastian was awake also. we started talking, and talking about the fact that we should go and wake up Nora because we were worried about her wetting the bed and that is when we discovered that she was missing.

You’re transcription skills are excellent. It’s not an easy task. At all. For years, I had to transcribe administrative law hearings. They drove me crazy. It was my least favorite part of my job - also, one of the most important. Thank you so much. I was heavily invested in this frustrating case as it was occurring. I’ve been out of the loop for awhile.

I’m using a combination of a really bad app and pausing and correcting the text as i go. It was my mums job, but not my skill set at all, hence the lack of punctuation and bits that don’t quite make sense.

A And shouted me here and I immediately knew I immediately, because the apartment was, I was standing in the open area at this point and you can call it instinct, when I wasn't looking in the bathroom, but I knew. i quickly raced around the apartment but my first thought was oh my God is if she got outside and she had drowned in the pool. She had No reason to go outside but you know she wasn't confident of water so I thought about the pool and i was outside calling for her and I saw two staff in the kitchen area and I was saying Manager is looking for someone who was in charge of my daughter is missing and then I ran back to Sally honestly a minute two minutes when I got back to the chalet that's when I noticed that the window was open and immediately are you the first thought that flashed through my mind was looking at the window open that window us and I also knew that it was physically and cognitively absolutely impossible that Nora wouldn't even notice the window so I was immediately panicked by the window so at that point I remember also calling to the other children, have you seen Nora and it took a few moments for them to genuinely understand what was going on and I pressed Innes and I asked her a few questions and I realised very quickly that Innes hadn’t seen Nora in awhile and what happened was it was still dark but just starting to be light and she went to the toilet abs Nora wasn't in the bed. And what happened He said that she thought Nora was probably just in a room with us as the children would regularly sometimes come to bed with us so it wouldn't have been unusual for her to think that as she wasn't in bed and anyway she went back to sleep at that point but what that meant was for some time she had been missing, and again I knew I felt quite strongly that I thought that she wouldn't be fine within the resort premises, but at that point I was thinking we've got to get out we've got to look everywhere possible so I started to ring the emergency number in the chalet at that point, and at that moment the owner arrived and we signaled that Nora was missing and she was asking a lot of questions as it is perfectly understandable about Nora, she said she would be safe in the resort or maybe she just should be wandering somewhere in the resort, and I just kept explaining, Nora she never even went out the front door of our own home in the middle of the night not wearing any clothes and Nora had real learning difficulties and was scared in the dark to go anywhere. So at this stage I was pressing the owner to call the police and to raise the alerts because I was really we needed a search party it was going to be more serious than that I knew it was going to be more serious than that.
