Mark was a student at University of Hawaii at Hilo in 1996. He was last seen by his dormitory roommate at 6:00 am on July 10. He did not arrive at his 9:00 am class. A witness may have seen him drive out of the dormitory parking lot between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm that day, but this has not been confirmed. He left all of his personal belongings behind, except for a snorkel, fins, and a snorkeling mask.
Mark's vehicle was found abandoned in a parking lot of a hotel near Anaehoomalu Bay on the western Hawaii coast about 6:00 pm on July 13. There was no sign of Mark at the scene, and he has never been seen again.
