Mark Smich: Innocent Dupe? Alternative Theories

"Cora Dacunha told Global News that Smich was an “amazing person,” adding that “he’ll do anything for you” before she broke down in tears.

A former friend told the Post that Smich moved with his mother from Mississauga when his parents separated a decade ago. "

CD is the one who introduced him to his girlfriend.

On the quiet Montrose Abbey Drive block where the photo was taken, neighbour Fred James sometimes saw Mr. Smich mowing his mother’s lawn and shovelling the driveway, but said he and his wife would cross the street to avoid Mr. Smich and his friends because they felt “uncomfortable.”

...the sullen 25-year-old Oakville man has the nervous twitch of someone who’s itching for a fix. He also has the black eye and facial cuts of someone on the wrong end of a scuffle - whether with arresting officers or with his new roommates at the local jail. A wannabe gangsta punk, he looks like trouble.

Now there is no one in court for him save his lawyer, Tom Dungey....

Some called him friendly, while others said they stayed away from the house and the family, saying several people in the neighbourhood had trouble with them.

Fanny Colin, another neighbour, told the Oakville Beaver her son-in-law has had problems with Smich and his dog, which she says caused issues when off-leash.

People said good things about DM as well, and that was all pooh poohed away with comments like there are always neighbours and friends who say they are shocked and can't believe it when something like this happens. The same can be said for MS.

JMO

Do we have any articles from people who spoke highly of DM other than his attorney? Neighbours? Friends?

Thanks Alethia- I look forward to seeing them over in DM Innocent Dupe thread. I remember the flight instructor who said he was a nice young boy and thought he'd go on to great things, but aside for some neighbors commenting, I can't remember any of his friends or colleagues materializing in shock and/or defense for DM. Yes, there are some that have been posted several times throughout this forum. IIRC, one was even a video of one of his neighbours on Maple Gate. But this is MS's thread and, sorry, but I don't have time to look them up again for you.

There was also the friend of his girlfriend and the man he bought the farm from. And there are no names here but...

Thoughts of Mr. Millard were rekindled as those who knew him learned with shock he is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Tim Bosma....

And his friends, old and current, remain shocked and disbelieving of the charges he is facing.

You can check the DM Innocent Dupe thread if you'd like, but I believe that thread was shut down fairly quickly as there were some who didn't seem to want that possibility discussed.

No problem. I've looked and haven't been able to find anyone who said anything nice about DM as a person in the media. Found that kind of odd myself. If you ever get time I'd appreciate the links.

Found this too when I was looking for something else. I guess the people who knew him expressed their feelings to someone.

I think the letters offer genuine insights into the mind of Dellen Millard and, for the first time, I really understood why people who know Millard don’t believe he can be guilty.

Did DM speak at all to LE some time after his arrest? Did he try to throw MS under the bus suggesting they watch the gore music video MS acted in and check his past criminal records, suggesting he was the type of guy LE should suspect? How did LE come upon the video?

Maybe a tip called in from someone close to the perps? Someone who was aware of the video, knew DM was already in custody and that DM and MS were associates/friends? MOO.

Police spokesperson Catherine Martin said Wednesday, police were aware of the video’s existence, but could not comment. The detective in charge of the case could not be reached for comment.

A close family friend of Oakville’s Mark Smich — who is charged with first-degree murder in the Tim Bosma case — told the Oakville Beaver she’s shocked by the news and can’t believe it could be true.

The friend said she has known the Smich family for years and doesn’t believe the accused, aged 25, is a person who would commit such a crime.

“The accusations are quite concerning. We just don’t know him as a person who would do such a thing,” she said.

“He’s very social. He has a lot of friends. He’s very family oriented. He loves his sisters and mother. He really takes a part in her life. He’s a positive, good person.”

The family friend believes Smich is not a violent or aggressive person.

“I’ve never seen him to be that way. He’s not that way. He’s friendly. He’s happy. All of our friends who we’ve had have known him to be a friendly, happy, social person.”

Some from above, some from another thread (thanks FromGermany) and others...

Neighbours also told CBC News they were shocked by the news of Millard's arrest and described him as "a normal kid."

He remembers the accused as a “reasonable guy to talk to, very businesslike in his approach.”

“It surprises me,” Nicholson said. “There was nothing in any indication in my contact with Dellen that he would have been capable of something like this.”

Dellen was “a nice young guy, kind of hit it off with him. We both drove nice pickup trucks so we were talking about our trucks.” Nicholson said Dellen did not put on airs or behave like a child of wealth or privilege.

One friend of Mr. Millard’s girlfriend shared the impression of him as a modest man who acted neither spoiled nor particularly well-off. “He’s a soft-spoken sort of a guy,” said the friend, who cannot be named due to a publication ban. “I didn’t even know he had money. He never acted like it.”

Video at link of a neighbour who has known him for years ...

I'm shocked yes. I'm shocked. He was a pleasant young man that minded his own business.

So other than the usual shocked reactions, and a couple of people who did not know him on a personal level, no one said anything nice about DM as a person. Like "he was a great friend, or someone who would do anything for you, kind, sweet, social with lots of friends who cared about him, loving son" etc.

Which is what I asked. And may only mean that no one who knew him as a close friend was interviewed. But the vibe I'm getting from him as a person is that he was a bit of a standoffish kind of guy. Didn't get too close to people. Which is why I asked if anyone who really knew him said anything nice about him as a person other than he pretended not to be rich or that he was a quiet neighbour and people who vaguely knew him were shocked. Pretty sure most people would be shocked if anyone they knew either vaguely or even closely for that matter was arrested for murder. Most people live their whole life without knowing someone arrested for murder.

Anyway. I don't take those quotes as nice things said about DM on a personal level. Too bad no one closer to him was interviewed I guess. :dunno:

And the only people who said nice things about MS were the girl who introduced him to his girlfriend and the director of the gore video. What did you expect them to say?

I thought unnamed sources were generally accepted by most in here. Why ask for links if you're just going to brush them off as not fitting what you want to see? I would have included his French friend too, but I knew where that would lead.

I thought that the request was just looking for anyone who spoke highly of DM who wasn't his lawyer, this implied the word of friends and neighbours would be acceptable, in my opinion.

I would expect anyone who was interviewed about MS to tell the interviewer what they thought of him. And they did.

I'd also expect the same for anyone who was interviewed about DM. And I guess they did too. Except in the quotes that I had seen, which are the same ones you linked, I did not see anyone saying anything nice about DM the person. The only one that even comes close is from a real estate agent who sold him some property 2 years prior to being interviewed who probably only spent a few hours with him. I asked if there were any quotes that perhaps I had not seen that described what a great guy he was or anything like that. I guess there aren't any of those type of quotes.

"So who is Mark Smich? We know his parents are split and he lives with his mom in a nice suburban home. We know that in legal parlance, he is known to police. Smich has an outstanding charge of mischief under $5,000 for allegedly tagging graffiti on a highway overpass. He also has five minor convictions - two of them for drug possession dating back to 2005 and 2006 and one for impaired driving in 2009."

Thanks again for this link, MsSherlock, it is a good reminder of the little we know of MS so far, and most of it seems to still be what was found out about him from the beginning, I think. And I think it brings up the crux of a point that had been debated here a little, namely that MS looks more the part and has the background for the writer of the article not to be surprised that he is a suspect, whereas she expressed that DM didn't seem to have the background or look the part. I wonder if perhaps this is what is right in front of everyone's faces that DM wondered why we can't see it? It seems to coincide with what his lawyer said as well that the truth would become clear once his co-accused was arrested, in my opinion. That and the statement that there is no more danger to the public once MS was arrested seem to be pointing towards something, in my opinion.

I'd still like to find out more about MS. From what I can recall so far, the only money I have heard of him earning has been from selling cigarettes to under-aged school children. I'm really curious how he was supporting himself, or if someone else was supporting him.

Juballee, IMHO, we know as much about MS as we would the majority of 25 year old's out there today. The article covered a fair amount about him. IMHO. IMO, you can't compare the fulsomeness of DM's & MS's lives respectively. DM had a bottomless bank account- opportunities that only an unlimited cash flow can provide along with all the toys that take some people an entire lifetime to accumulate and the majority of people may never attain one. There are pics of DM in numerous countries, on boats, parachuting, in helicopters, filming movies, cars, trucks, buying and selling millions of dollars worth of real estate....the world was his oyster. The guy was only 27!!!!!!!!!!! How many 27 year old CEO's are out there? Considering the fact that most CEO's these days need their MBA's plus a decade of experience, I'd say not many. That well documented lifestyle DM enjoyed is definitely not the norm for most 27 year old's. It was a wealth that was accumulated over 2 or 3 generations- perhaps more. Old money to the family-new money to DM. DM certainly didn't have to live with WM for financial reasons.

MS on the other hand lived at home with his Mom for obvious financial reasons. There is indication that he completed high school- that he helped his Mom. Yes, he has a rap sheet for minor offenses and it's obvious that he had some vices- but perhaps his Mom was trying to get him on the right path, or exercising some patience with him? IMHO, MS's living at home could have been for socio-economic reasons. But, at the end of the day, I think MS is more typical of young men his age these days- perhaps picking up cash jobs in landscaping/construction? Their lives aren't quite as exciting as DM's. MOO

However, even with "the danger to the public" arrested, DM is still charged with MORE murders than Smich is. JMO

MS may have wanted to help a friend rip someone off. DM murdered his own father. That is sick. JMO

If money was the motive in DM's father's murder, would he have killed his own mother too, if she stood to gain anything from her ex-husband's death?
