On November 10, 1973 the body of Mary Jo Shelleby was discovered in the roadway on McIntosh Rd. just south of Clark Rd. Mary Jo’s death was a result of a homicide. Mary Jo was attending Manatee Junior College at the time and was known to “hitch-hike” as a means of traveling. The investigation indicates possibly more than one person was involved in Mary Jo’s death.

The area where she was found is an offset intersection. It is an Industrial area now with many businesses nearby.

I don't know when the railroad bed was removed but my guess is, the perp or perps is local. This area would have been pretty rural and unknown to most people back in 1973. The rail bed that used to be there is now the Legacy Trail, a biking/walking path.

Potential suspects had been interviewed, but no arrests have been made. Some of her clothing was sent for DNA testing over the years as technology developed, but deputies said they weren’t provided with any new leads from the DNA testing.

The tracks were removed between Nov. 2018 and Oct. 2019 Dec. 2016 and June 2018.
edited to correct location and date, but abandonment was nevertheless still quite recent
