Dundalk Area Legislators Demand Closure of Baltimore Community High School After Beating.
Dundalk, MD - May 19th 2015
An open letter to the Mayor of Baltimore, Baltimore City Schools Board Chair, and CEO of Baltimore City Schools:
Maryland’s 6th District Delegation joins 7th District Baltimore County Councilman Todd Crandell in requesting the immediate closure of the Baltimore Community High School located at 6820 Fait Ave, Baltimore, MD 21224.
The school’s failure to successfully address decades-long student behavioral issues coupled with the school’s poor location finally led us to a serious incident this past April 24th. Baltimore County Police performed several arrests as well as committing resources for increased patrols, yet the both Baltimore City Police as well as Baltimore City Schools Police and the school’s Principal have shown little commitment to solving this systemic issue.
We believe that this issue cannot be resolved under current jurisdiction. Recent arrests and increased police presence has only served to heighten tensions and further increase the danger to both students and residents. Perhaps at no time in the past decade have things been more dangerous than they are right now.
It is our considered opinion that the only remedy is to close the Baltimore Community High School after the 2014-2015 Academic Year. We have not reached this opinion lightly; however, after many meetings with both the community and Baltimore City Schools, we are not convinced that an acceptable and effective remedy can be implemented before the next school year. We request expeditious closing of this school for the good of the students and the Harborview Community in Dundalk.
Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to your prompt response to this sensitive issue.
Respectfully Yours,
Baltimore County Councilman Todd Crandell
Senator Johnny Ray Salling
Delegate Bob Long
Delegate Ric Metzgar
Delegate Robin Grammer
