Officers responded to an apartment at the 500 block of Coventry Road for a report from a citizen about a foul odor. There they found the bodies of 6-year-old Da’neria Thomas and her brother, 8-year-old Davin Thomas

“There is nothing more difficult than investigating the murder of a child, much less two children,” said Harrison.

Harrison said detectives worked “really hard” to locate the mother, Jamerria Hall, who was found Wednesday morning. Once she was detained, detectives were able to obtain a confession through a line of questioning.

Officials are still working to figure out the exact cause and time of death of the children.

“To the best of my knowledge they were seen last week, but we are working with the Medical Examiner to determine the exact time of death, or how long they were kept in there,” Harrison said.

This image of Hall and her children was released by Baltimore Police when they went missing in October 2018.

The circumstances around their brief disappearance is unclear, but Commissioner Michael Harrison said Wednesday that the three were reported missing, but were found at a hospital the very next day.

Harrison did not say whether anyone was injured when they were found in the hospital, but did say the incident is a part of their investigation.

An emotional Mayor Brandon Scott joined the commissioner in the announcement. He noted the timing of the tragedy, right before kids head back to school.

“Davin and Da’neria should be making new friends,” said Scott. “They should be showing off their new school shoes, they should be really starting to grow into who they are as a person, inching closer and closer to their full potential. And we should be celebrating their promise. But instead, we are here today talking about their unfortunate death. And I’ll be honest, I didn’t sleep much last night.”

Neighbors on Coventry Road are heartbroken, telling 11 News they remember seeing the two children playing in the yard and riding bikes. But they said that all stopped about a week ago.

"The police came to my apartment and pretty much told me two children were found unresponsive in the building next door," neighbor Toni Hyman said. "I literally just saw them. They just asked about my daughter and when she was coming back, and they seemed fine."

Hyman said her 9-year-old daughter played with the children, who are around the same age. She said they lived in the apartment on Coventry Road with their mother.

"They're definitely very friendly, very respectful they say, 'Yes ma'am, no ma'am. May I? Can I?' They're very respectful, she definitely raised two very calm respectful children. They play in the grass, my daughter thinks they're fun to be around," Hyman said.

Police are looking into Hall's background. The 11 News I-Team has learned that in October 2018, police asked for the public's help in finding Hall and her two children, who were reported missing.

Also in 2018, according to a public records search, Hall pleaded guilty to first-degree arson, and the court put her on probation. While staying at her mother's house, Hall disabled smoke detectors and set fire to a frying pan with family photos in it. Investigators also found a makeshift shrine with family photos on a sofa. She locked the house doors and took her children to a hospital, where they were found uninjured.

"We are looking at ATMs, Hall's history to find out what happened in her history that could have led up to this," Harrison said.

Wow. Look at these beautiful smiling kids. Their mommy smiling in the middle. What happened?

Now everyone wonders if she was a troubled mom? When these children are left dead? Like we see in so many cases around the country did BMore fail them?

Fire starters? Right there? Troubled is the least of it. JMO

Wish these siblings were getting ready for school.
