IMO....
This could have been one of those times LE felt their life was in danger, shoot and ask questions later.
So what happened to the police saying we will not tolerate this in our city?

There are a lot of innocent people caught up in that crowd, this is far from the right time to shoot and ask questions later. Stray bullets kill.

Cnn is doing a lot on the earthquake in Nepal today. In a way it is annoying because I want to hear how things are in Baltimore. But it really is best this way. The protesters won't be able to sit around today trying to see if they made it in the news. I find that satisfying.

Baltimore seems pretty calm today. I haven't heard anything about disruptions happening, just family and friends mourning the loss of Mr. Gray.

There is supposed to be another large protest next Saturday. As long as the instigators stay away, it should remain peaceful but, sadly, there are some who just wait for the opportunity to cause problems.

SABBM

My personal opinion is that the mainstream media makes this ten times (or more) worse !!
Of course, we know the media is objective at all times .... and would not 'side' with anyone. ;) Sounds cynical, but this is just how I've been looking at what is going on.

I think that if MSM was there reporting, it would be continuing today.

I doubt it will be very large. Peaceful protestors accomplished their goal, which is to get a complete investigation into his injuries while in police custody. They will move on to other things. My city has had cases of mistreatment while in police custody and the culprits lost their jobs.

Mayor of Baltimore thanks the Nation of Islam

At about 1:40 into the video Mayor Rawlings-Blake thanks the Nation of Islam. <modsnip>

Also listen at 9:50 into the video. The Mayor of Baltimore says “we also worked hard to give those who wished to destroy - space to do so as well”

I've been trying to read about this case, and learn more, and I haven't followed it closely. I have only read about 1/3 of this thread so far-- and will read more later today. But I'd like to ask posters if there is any additional specific medical information that is available? I'm assuming autopsy is not yet public.

What I've gleaned from msm reports:

"Crushed" larynx-- is there any specifics on the damage to the larynx? Which cartilage/s fractured, etc?

I read "partially severed spinal cord", and "fractured vertebrae"-- has it been released which levels in the spine were fractured? Any details on the specific type of the fracture (such as a dislocation, versus burst fracture, etc?)

Did he have a head injury as well?

I saw he was in hospital ICU for a week when he died, and had emergency surgery (but it sounds like that may have happened a day or 2 after admission?) Are there any more medical details available?

Like everyone, I want to understand what happened here. Mechanics of the injury-- was there evidence of deceleration trauma, hyperextension, static crush, etc.

I'm sure the ME knows-- just wondering what has been released to the public about the mechanism of injury.

Thanks in advance. A very sad set of circumstances.

The medical info that has been released is very limited. I found this:

No the Coroners report isn't out yet and we don't have specifics. As a matter of fact what we have gotten on the medical is mainly from the family attorney so what we have heard can't be verified.

We could probably use you when the coroners report does come out.

Family had an autopsy done as well as the state autopsy. We haven't heard of any head injury as yet..

The info released is quite basic and limited. Frankly, it's not enough information to make ANY inferences as to what exactly happened, and when it happened. Clearly the police are being blamed for either intentionally, or negligently causing the injuries, but I'm not sure we can logically come to that conclusion YET.

It could be that he sustained a series of injuries such that the first injury (which could have been a result of something that happened intentionally, or inadvertently, directly before the video), was exacerbated unintentionally by the actions of the police during the van loading and transportation.

Or, perhaps the original injury occurred, and the delay in obtaining medical care, coupled with his cuffs and leg irons, and being jostled about without a seat belt, worsened the injuries.

The police could have caused and known about his injuries, or not known at all, and apprehended him in the usual manner, which inadvertently caused worsening of the injuries. We just have too little information to know, yet.

It is strange that no one has been arrested or charged yet. That says to me that perhaps the mechanism of injury and the sequence of causation is still uncertain. I'd think if it was a clear cut case of inappropriate or excessive force, the officers involved would be fired and arrested. Certainly to try to head off the riots.

I'm including a link about cervical spine mechanisms of injury. I think the whole picture will be much clearer when we know more about the specifics of his injuries. The one comment in the linked post above is intriguing-- that the pattern of injury is something seen in older people (FG was 25 and presumably pretty healthy.) Was it a flexion or extension dislocation, or something like a burst fracture? Pressure on the back of the neck, while hyperextending the neck? A fall or blow to the top of the head, causing axial loading and a blow out below? Etc.

I'm absolutely certain his medical records and autopsy contain all the relevant info right now. The question is, why all the vague medical information released to the public? The delays in REAL information in these cases are so frustrating! Have a press conference, detail the injuries and expert interpretation of the causation, and make arrests if appropriate.

I hate having to guess at what the injuries are! It delays me forming an educated opinion as to who, if anyone, I think is responsible. Whenever there is a delay in specific information released, vagueness and deflection, or omission, I feel like I'm being manipulated and "played" or pandered to by the media, social activists, and authorities. (But sometimes that's the goal, I suppose. Who knows.)

See BBM above.

Freddie had lead poisoning as a child. Not sure if there is any relationship between lead poisoning and fxs.

I feel the same as you about feelings of frustration and suspicion of manipulation. However they do have some things going on that might hamper the release.

I posted a link sometime in the last couple of days that they were having "experts" investigate the spinal injury.

And we have to keep in mind that they are pretty busy with the riot situation there right now and I am sure they have to evaluate whether the release of any info will worsen the situation there.

I had hoped the family might release the info on their autopsy after the funeral. But with the worsening of the riot situation I don't know if they will now.
