Is it possible for a person to inflict that kind of injury on themselves even thrusting about violently ? If he threw himself off a building or in front of a moving vehicle, but banging around inside a van? I'm asking because I don't know the answer. My initial thought is that there is no way he could do that to himself .

I've been reading about lead poisoning and it can weaken bones:

http://www.arltma.com/Articles/OsteoporosisDoc.htm

Lead Toxicity

Lead poisoning is also commonly associated with bone problems. Lead interferes with calcium metabolism and can replace calcium in storage sites.

Obviously I have no idea what happened to Freddie, but maybe this could be a factor?

Baltimore PD has two prior cases of paralysis along with other less serious injuries resulting from prisoners being taken for a "rough ride" in police vans. Lawsuits from those injuries resulted in multi million dollar payouts.

RSBM

That is shameful, if true. Those whose businesses and vehicles were destroyed would be within their rights to sue the city ; imo.

Which sure would help those whose insurance will not cover what the rioters did.

I think he may have had osteopenia/osteoporosis from the lead poisoning. jmo

Given the extent of Freddie's injuries and his death, why was the investigation still being handled internally by the Baltimore PD? This wasn't a minor internal matter.

That's a question I have - especially since, in the beginning, the BPD announced there would be an independent investigation.

What happened to the independent investigation?

Maybe the Mayor should "stand down" now if she told LE to do so!

She may be more of a "peacetime consigliere" to quote The Godfather.

Here is the link.
"BALTIMORE — A prisoner sharing a police transport van with Freddie Gray told investigators that he could hear Gray “banging against the walls” of the vehicle and believed that he “was intentionally trying to injure himself,” according to a police document obtained by The Washington Post."

How does anyone know whether or not the word of this person can be trusted?

Apparently the LE involved are saying that the transport vehicle's GPS can be thoroughly checked for speed & how many times they stopped the vehicle due to concern of what FG was doing to himself inside. This is the chatter on live news now.

So we will see when the investigation unravels.

Probably the same way whomever takes the word of a jail house snitch. I think.

He could be lying but I cannot imagine what would motivate this prisoner to lie about such a detail - in essence taking the side of law enforcement. The fact is this second prisoner is the best witness to what happened to Gray. He could not see Gray but he was an "earwitness" to what happened.

Based on this latest information I cannot imagine that charges will be laid against the six officers.

The GPS won't give any info regarding whether or not FG was allegedly "intentionally trying to injure himself" - which was what the other prisoner was supposedly claiming.

For all anyone knows, the other prisoner may have been coerced into making that statement. At this point in time, I don't necessarily trust any info coming out of the BPD, based on the history that has been posted in these threads.

ETA: And I'm typically pro LE.

The GPS info won't confirm whether or not FG was "throwing himself against the walls," but it will certainly either confirm or refute if it was a "rough ride."

On another note, didn't I hear that the family was having an independent autopsy done? Were those results released yet?

Reduced charges? Plea deal? Not getting beaten to death? Speshul PD favors and status, ala Huggy Bear?

Really? There is a ton of motivation.

Haven't you noticed that she hasn't been seen much today? The Govenor has been doing PC's and they have had some of her friends on. But she has been quiet.

I noted the police commissioner today talking about Mon. and he says what they did worked???
And the Govenor has refused to discuss who did what on Mon. So I would guess there may be some things going on behind the scenes.

The GPS will show the transport speed which is very important if allegations of rush driving leading to injuries are rumored. Additionally, if the van was stopped frequently, one could believe LE's statements that it was due to assisting FG who was agitated & self-inflicting.
The GPS is going to be forensically dissected as part of the investigation (as well as autopsy and witness statements).
