Do we have any idea of the shooter's motive?
If what is being said about him is true then he is one sick scary guy.

Sounds like it wouldn't take much to set him off.

Well, unfortunately for some, he wasn't a migrant from Central America. Just your everyday angry white male with a gun. Nothing to see, just a responsible American gun owner.

He definitely is either Muslim or a migrant from Central America. Don't worry, Faux news probably isn't even covering this.

and hey fine do all this terrorism nonsense while its breaking look at all we know

and they let this dude go on bump the booking and let the reporter live on the scene report the two minutes they slotted our terrorism expert

Contact Us

directory for Capital Gazette Communications' staff

Three of the slain were editors:
Wendi Winters, 65
Gerald Fischman, 61
Rob Hiaason, 59

One was a sports reporter:
John McNamara, 56

One was a advertising sales assistant:
Rebecca Smith, 34

Two more were injured. I'm unsure if they've been named by police.

ETA: There are around 35-40 employees for the Capital Gazette, if the "Contact us" page is up-to-date ... and if I'm reading the page correctly.

Also: This Baltimore Sun story shares the ages of the victims: Five dead in 'targeted attack' at Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, police say

It's been discussed a little ... possibly a long-running beef the shooter had with prior newspaper coverage of his criminal harassment case, namely a 2011 story. More upthread. :) Drive safely!

The defamation case came before Judge Maureen Lamasney, and it was dismissed due to lack of merit, because the article was based on information available in the public record. One section of the ruling (available in the appeal case) is particularly interesting, a transcript of the original trial documenting a discussion between Ramos and Judge Lamasney:

Mr. Ramos: Your Honor, if I may say one more thing?

The Court: Go ahead.

Mr. Ramos: I would add that the public record from which that statement came from, was not even identified in the column, there was nothing to a lead a reader to understand where that statement was being taken from.

The Court: I understand that, but that does not make it false.

Mr. Ramos: But it makes it unfair.

The Court: I’m sorry, but I am going to dismiss your suit with prejudice.

Ramos appealed the ruling, and it came before Judge Thomas Moylan who wrote in his ruling: “A lawyer would almost certainly have told him not to proceed with this case. It reveals a fundamental failure to understand what defamation law is and, more particularly, what defamation law is not.”

In his conclusion, Judge Moylan pointed out, “The appellant wa
n his conclusion, Judge Moylan pointed out, “The appellant was charged with a criminal act. The appellant perpetrated a criminal act. The appellant plead guilty to having perpetrated a criminal act. The appellant was punished for his criminal act. He is not entitled to equal sympathy with his victim… He does not appear to have learned his lesson.”

some emails from him

Dear Reader,

If you're here now, you probably just Googled my name. If this story caught you off guard, there's something you should know. While I did commit the offense of harassment, the victim's version of events is a gross misrepresentation of what actually occurred. Mr. Hartley has here further distorted the truth.

Upon reconsideration this afternoon, Judge Jonas D. Legum has overturned my conviction despite continued opposition by the victim. At hearing she showed her true colors and the court was unpersuaded by her attempted manipulation. If you know me, ask me. I certainly did a bad thing, but don't shun me for how it was portrayed by this newspaper.

Mr. Hartley,

This is your written notice the conditions I provided to you are hereby withdrawn. You have chosen to ignore my letter, but your response was not invisible. The ground you tried digging was solid, as my integrity. Say the same to me and you've lied once more. You can expect my lawsuit in July. Get your people ready, because I will be.

You people have no explanation for the removal of my comment?

Even though it appears you have acted with personal spite, ill will, and a desire to see me come to harm?

Even though it appears to be a conscious effort to conceal or ignore anything contrary to the words of a vengeful source of highly questionable credibility?

Are you guys truly the champions of free speech, accountability, and organizational transparency, or do those things only really matter when they suit your purposes to make people look bad and generate revenue?

A CAUSE OF ACTION COMES

Eric Hartley and The Capital have been aware of their exposure for months. They have been aware of their tortiously inflicted harm, which can and has continued to accrue. They lied there was "a call for comment left with [my] attorney" then dismissed and ultimately obstructed my answer. They have known my lawsuit is coming and done nothing to avoid it. All told, they just don’t care. I envision, much like 11 years ago, it will take nothing less than a jury to change their attitudes and, hopefully, this time, culture.

If bunches of kids and 58 concert goers, among others, didn't change anything, a few reporters getting killed certainly won't move the bar. Sadly, of course. On to the next.

Not to mention the hundreds, if not thousands more wounded in those shootings ... ugh. Nauseating to even think about.

trying to find the actual piece written July 31, 2011 story titled "Jarrod wants to be your friend" that started it all

ah ha Ramos has a degree in computer engineering and had worked for the US Bureau of Labor Statistics for six years.

ah again the picture on his twitter was the reporters face

sub-buzz-6309-1530237462-1.png

He once tweeted that he'd "enjoy" seeing The Capital go out of business, "but it would be nicer to see Hartley and Marquardt cease breathing."

might want to check the judges office out

Ramos hadn't tweeted since January 2016. Then on Thursday, minutes before the shooting, he tweeted, "🤬🤬🤬🤬 you, leave me alone @judgemoylanfrnd."

tweeted and included a similar photoshopped photo of Special Appeals Judge Charles Moylan, who upheld a lower court ruling dismissing Ramos's defamation claim.

Here's What We Know About The Suspect In The Maryland Newspaper Shooting

Eric Hartley, the former staff writer, is now at the Virginia Pilot, and Tom Marquardt, the former publisher, retired in 2012. Additionally, the Capital Gazette was acquired by the Baltimore Sun in 2014, which marked a leadership change at the publication.

It was a honor to try to capture Gerald Fischman, a fascinating and brilliant man who earned the respect of his colleagues - and quietly amused them. I hope I did you justice.

And a Kelcie Pegher, a current LA Times reporter who had worked worked with Mr. Fischman:
