NEW DETAILS AND MICHAEL JOHNSON WAS DENIED BAIL:
Prosecutors alleged Friday that the 28-year-old man charged with murdering Phylicia Barnes killed her in her sister's Northwest Baltimore apartment, then moved her body using a 35-gallon plastic tub.
Michael Maurice Johnson, the ex-boyfriend of Phylicia's older half-sister, had exchanged 500 text messages with Phylicia in the months prior to her death, said Assistant State's Attorney Lisa Goldberg during a bail review hearing. Barnes had told a relative that Johnson made her feel uncomfortable, Goldberg said.
Goldberg said Johnson was captured on videotape buying the tub at a Walmart, and that a woman of Phylicia's size could
hypothetically fit in a tub that size. A neighbor told authorities they saw Johnson one day struggling to move the tub down a flight of stairs. The tub has not been recovered, Goldberg said.
Goldberg also said that in emails and text messages last October Johnson had talked about fleeing the country in the event he was charged.
Circuit Court Judge John Addison Howard ordered Johnson held without bail, saying he was concerned about the conversations involving him fleeing the country.
One of Johnson's attorneys, Brandon Mead, said that his client being charged on such a thin case is "a travesty." Mead said the case was entirely circumstantial and that Johnson has cooperated in every stage with investigators.
Johnson, the last known person to see 16-year-old Phylicia alive, has denied any involvement in the killing.
Phylicia disappeared from her sister's apartment on Dec. 28, 2010, and her nude body was found months later floating in the Susquehanna River in Harford County. By filing the murder charges against Johnson in Baltimore, authorities are indicating that Phylicia was killed in the city and her body was moved.
On Thursday, city police added her death to the 2012 list of homicides, according to a spokesman. The location of the homicide is listed as the 6500 block of Eberle Drive, the Northwest Baltimore apartment complex where she was last seen.
