I don’t think this youth in California knew the guy or had any contact with him prior. I don’t think it was a situation where they’d been chatting online or anything. I really feel like the only thing LE have is this camera footage.

They probably don’t see the point in doing a sketch as the only basic details the girl can remember are probably what we can see in the video anyway. So they probably feel like the video is “helpful” more than a sketch.

It is definitely odd how someone is shutting the door though. He also seems to venture off to the right instead of going through what appears to be a gate. Maybe it’s just the layout of the property and there’s a drive on the other side but just something I noticed.

It looked to me that at first someone was almost giving him his clothes and items as he was leaving the home and that’s why we see somebody closing the door. But if that was the case and he’d been caught, there would definitely be a sense of escaping from him as he’d be worried they’d be calling police, surely? He’d be running from the property or something. Also, now that I’m assuming LE in that area are following up on that case, surely some other property on the street has a camera that shows him leaving either on foot or his car? Surely more details must be out there.

I thought it looked like someone else shut the door, but besides ,that the witness did see his face and since the video offers otherwise helpful clues to a sketch arist it seems like a good idea to get some better idea of his face. IMO..

Something to consider is the reported violence with Rachel. We don't know specific details but it sounds like she fought back so I would think the perp was injured during the attack. Hopefully something memorable that will trigger someone putting the pieces together. I think he's going to be identified.

I see your point, because what else explains his state of undress - very unusual. But because assault is also part of the scene, it's just as plausible he left blood behind. However that would occur. Could be as simple as cutting his finger or a bloody nose caused by a brief scuffle. But IMO, it's the DNA collection for a seemingly minor crime that's so unusual.

I have no idea if I'm downplaying the circumstances, I'm trying to be sensitive. But the ushering out the door is just so weird. It looks like whoever shuts the door, hands him something before he turns around, he accepts it with his right hand and tucks under his left arm.

However, LAPD have said it wasn't a sexual assault.

He could have simply cut himself in the process of breaking in, and the police would have been stupid to not swab that.

I had a case not so long ago in England, a young man, lifetime petty (and not-so-petty) criminal. American but living in the UK for some time. Half the time it was impossible to get him to put on a shirt or top at all; outside of court I would have to practically force him to put a top on. For some people of that "lifestyle" it's a part of their identity, walking around topless as part of a defiance.

Just curious, how many of you think LAPD was actively investigating this case? In how many burglary & assault cases, does LAPD collect and send DNA in for analyzing? They went to all that trouble with the DNA, but we have no sketch of the perp's face? Whoever shut the door saw him, does that make sense? Would DNA results even be back in five months time on a low priority case like this? What about the crime lab backlog?

I hope that message catches on; this is an urgent public safety issue. Since the release of the suspect info, I've not seen very much energy from the LEA community on this. And actually it should now be above their heads; politicians need to wade in and put fire under this.

If there is student housing near the assault on the young girl on March 26, and five months later there's an assault in Maryland in August, it aligns with a post-secondary school schedule ... suggesting he has family in Maryland.

Connecting with a young girl when her parents are away, and grabbing a woman from a jogging path in broad daylight ... almost seems like there's a social media connection. Both victims were conveniently, but unusually, alone at the time of abduction.

Almost looks like he is handed something on the way out, tucks it under the other arm as he turns to leave.

LAPD was awarded a roughly $1.7 million grant from the USDOJ 2022 DNA Capacity Enhancement & Backlog Reduction Program (to be used from Oct 1, 2022 - Sept 30, 2024). I believe they are using FaSTR™ as one of their tools in this effort. In short, it would appear that their ability to process quickly has been given a boost in recent months.

My thought on the burglary case was this...the fact that it was a "hot burglary" (someone in the home at the time...particularly a child) may have bumped it up on the list of priorities. Or perhaps it was something the perp said to the victim that made the case a higher than usual priority (i.e. maybe a statement indicating future intent to harm)? The person in the home at the time could have also pointed LE to specific areas where the perp left his DNA, making collection somewhat easier. I'm also wondering if there are other similar crimes that might have taken place prior...that may have caused LE to collect DNA in this event?

Being escorted by someone to the door is really strange.

I'm thinking drunk guy walks into the wrong house and crashes, after finding him sleeping on the sofa or in bedroom, perhaps a bedroom were young girl was sleeping, is then escorted out of the house by resident. Police is then called later, instead of immediately. DNA is collected from some item inside the house. No one knows who the guy is.

OR maybe a house party situation, and this unknown guy shows up, mingles, tries to get friendly with young girl, escorted to door.

For an assault to occur, there doesn't necessarily need to be a physical confrontation.


If the guy had the same cell phone with him at both scene. Cell phone tower data from towers in the area of the two crime locations may be able to be used to compare if there is a match at the known time when both incidents occurred. Phone information could then be tracked to locate subject.

Wouldn't surprise me if Genealogy DNA testing is being done as we speak. Hopefully one of his relatives submitted a sample to one of the databases to find out who their kin are.

I can't stop wondering, what else has this perp done...

Joseph DeAngelo (Golden State Killer) started out doing "hot burglaries" and his crimes escalated to rape, and then murder fairly quickly.

I feel like the perp had to have done a fair amount of surveillance, and/or known the LA neighborhood well where that crime took place. The 77th district in LA has a significant gang presence and has some of LA's most dangerous neighborhoods...it would seem really risky for a perp to go around randomly burglarizing there. He goes into a house belonging to some Crips....alone...looking to steal from them...and he's likely a dead man.

The Bel Air homicide seems like a high-risk crime, but perhaps if the perp was surveilling the victim in advance...attacking the victim when she was outdoors running might have been one of his only opportunities to do so when she was alone?

It is strange...but perhaps the victim was very intelligent? If hypothetically the perp entered through some other point to the home...then "helping" the perp exit via that particular door may have been a brilliant way to capture a visual image of them on their security camera? If the perp had entered through that particular door that he exited from, LE would have provided the public that entry footage too for ID purposes, wouldn't they?

What was this perp's intent in the California incident? A robbery? Did he expect an empthy home? Why didn't he disguise himself? He knew a witness could recognize him. Did he leave his shirt behind? If the intent was an attack, it seems that the victim was compliant, which might have saved their life. Did the victim persuade him to leave, perhaps by telling him that the family would be home any minute?

Was there a different motive in the Maryland case? Did he plan to rob RM? Did he plan to kill? Why would he worry about being recognized in one but not the other case?
