At Parkdale High School in Prince George's County, Gladys Tordil was remembered as a chemistry teacher who was a favorite among students (...). Her classroom door was covered with sticky notes and a giant card after news of her death spread.

One of her daughters' classmates told the Washington Post that Gladys Tordil was "always happy, always singing, always dancing." She was described as the type of teacher who paid out of pocket for bowling and pizza for students who couldn't afford to pay their own way.

Malcom Winffel's family was not surprised to learn that he died in an effort to help others.

(...)

On Friday, the 45-year-old man was helping a woman in the parking lot of Montgomery Mall when police say he was shot and killed by Eulalio Tordil, 62, of Adelphi.

Authorities say the wave of violence concluded with two more shooting scenes that were likely the result of botched carjackings.

On Saturday, police identified the two victims who died in the Friday shootings. Winffel was fatally shot at the first attempted carjacking, at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. Tordil later drove to a strip mall in Aspen Hill, where police say he fatally shot Claudina Molina, 65, of Silver Spring.

(...)

At a news conference Saturday night, Montgomery County Assistant Police Chief Russ Hamill said Winffel and his friend, who was not identified, were coming to the carjacking victim's aid when they were shot.

"Those two men acted selflessly and heroically, most likely saving her life," Hamill said.

Hamill said Winffel's friend, who was described Friday as being in grave condition, is "making progress. We remain hopeful he'll survive

Police say they've seen no signs of remorse from a federal police officer accused of a two-day shooting spree in a string of suburban parking lots in Maryland that left three people dead and three wounded.

Eulalio Tordil, 62, of Adelphi is scheduled to make an initial court appearance Monday in Rockville, a suburb near the nation's capital, on charges including first-degree murder.

A federal security officer charged with killing three people, including his estranged wife, in a shooting rampage in a Maryland suburb of the nation's capital has been ordered held without bond.

Sixty-two-year-old Eulalio Tordil, an employee of the Federal Protective Service, appeared in court by video Monday afternoon in Rockville, Maryland. He faces charges including first-degree murder.

A public defender representing him conceded it wasn't realistic to ask for Tordil to be released.
