By 11 a.m., two divers aboard a Maine Marine Patrol boat were preparing to enter the water upstream of Middle Road.

State Police have offered more information about their response to finding a vehicle on I-295 in Falmouth that belongs to 37-year-old Anneliese Heinig, a Richmond woman who's been missing since November 26th.

They say a trooper spotted the SUV vehicle in the northbound breakdown lane that morning, stopped, made a quick check on the vehicle, and left it as it was not considered a hazard.

Later that afternoon, police say a DOT employee called to report seeing the SUV in the same spot, at which time it was towed away.

The trooper checked the registration and found no alerts or any information it was connected to anyone that was missing.

Lt. Jeffrey Pardue of the Falmouth department said in an email to Boston.com that authorities haven’t “ruled in or ruled out any specific areas.”

“As of right now, all the search and rescue experts from the Maine State Police, Maine Warden Service, and Maine Marine Patrol can definitively say is that Ms. Heinig is not in the areas where we have searched,” he wrote. “While this may not sound like a particularly significant statement, the search efforts performed over Monday and Wednesday [allow] law enforcement to expand the initial area of focus.”

On Wednesday, Heinig’s mother, father and sister stood on the Route 9 bridge that parallels the interstate and watched while three boats crisscrossed a wide swath of the river. The search ended late in the day with no new clues about what happened to Heinig.

CH, who spent decades on the water as a marine biologist and is familiar with Maine’s coastal waterways, said he felt the need to be on the scene, to remain active and focused on his daughter.

“I just have to stay occupied or I’d go nuts,” he said.

While game wardens, state police divers and others searched the water under the Route 9 overpass and surrounding area, CH said he was holding out hope that his daughter is not there, even if it means she was abducted from the highway.

In Richmond, CI, Heinig’s landlord, said he’s known her for about 15 years. She had rented an apartment from him early on, and about three years ago moved back in.

CI said he recalls seeing her heading out early either last Monday or Tuesday morning when he went out to get the newspaper, but he has no idea why she might have been going to Portland.

“She’s an artist,” IC said. “She paints landscapes and people. She’s got good friends.”

RH, a shift supervisor of the Dunkin’ on Route 197 in Richmond, near the interchange at I-295, said Heinig had worked there until about three months ago.

“She’s all about her kids,” RH said, noting that they have children in the same school and would see each other picking them up. “For her not to go home is extremely unusual.”

Dozens attend vigil in Brunswick for missing Richmond mother

Scores of friends and family members gathered together while the snow fell to share stories of Heinig, many of who touched upon her kindness and her athletic talent.

“Thirty-one years later it’s amazing to hear the impression she had on people,” said Pat Clark, Anneliese Heinig’s kindergarten teacher. “Even as a little girl she just had this way about her.”

Friends and family of missing Richmond mother paint portrait of loving, caring woman

“We still don’t what happened or why she was headed to Portland that day,” said her mother. “But we’re here to focus on how many lives she’s touched.”

Once Heinig was reported missing, Richmond police traced the location of Heinig’s cellphone. That led them to a South Portland tow company that had removed the car she was driving from the highway at the request of Maine State Police on Nov. 26, the last day she was seen.

Family members said they, along with police, have been to Heinig’s apartment in Richmond and found nothing out of order. Her mother had spoken to her on the Monday before Thanksgiving and said she was “in a great mood.”

Family members doubt Heinig locked herself out of the car. Anne Heinig noted that the SUV was equipped with a numerical keypad to unlock the driver’s door, so Anneliese could have gotten back into the car without keys.

When Heinig’s parents picked up the SUV from the tow lot in South Portland, they noticed the low-gas light had come on, and the tank was so close to empty that a tow truck driver followed them to a gas station after the family picked up the vehicle. Family members believe she might have been walking to get gas, carrying cash on her and leaving her wallet in the car.

Heinig lives with her 16-year-old daughter in Richmond. Her 5-year-old son lives close by with his father, Anne Heinig said. Anneliese Heinig recently went with her daughter to get their nails done together, for her daughter’s birthday, and the two were planning a spa day, the family said. Heinig works at a Brunswick company that provides customer service for other businesses, and loves the job and the people she works with, her father said this week.

At the vigil Friday, Anderson told Heinig’s friends and family to remember to check in on each other and support each other as often as possible.

Still no sign of missing Richmond woman despite extensive search

A Richmond woman who disappeared in Falmouth before Thanksgiving was still missing on Saturday despite an extensive search involving the use of boats, aircraft and a drone on the Presumpscot River.

The on-call officer with Falmouth police, who are coordinating the effort, said there was no news to share on Saturday afternoon.

“Boats and aircraft will be routinely checking the immediate area for the foreseeable future,” the officer, Lt. Frank Soule III, said in an email. “Any possible leads will be looked into immediately.”

“Going forward short of any new information, we will continue to search these areas on a smaller scale,” Soule said
