Pregnant mom charged in Maine girl's beating death is being abused in jail: attorney

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/pregna...ating-death-is-being-abused-in-jail-attorney/

A defense attorney says a Maine woman charged with murder in her 10-year-old daughter's death is being abused in jail. The 33-year-old mother is 7 months pregnant, according to reports by CBS affiliate WGME.

Attorney Chris MacLean told WCSH-TV that Sharon Carrillo shouldn't be in jail, and that there is not always enough staff to keep her safe.

This is what our governor had to say about this:
http://www.newscentermaine.com/arti...rissa-kennedy-a-comedy-of-errors/97-526623944
"In this particular case, it is a comedy of errors both at DHHS, CDS, the mandatory reporters from the schools, law enforcement...everybody messed this up."

I don't agree everybody messed this up, because BPD and the school depts. all reported the abuse, and it appeares to have gone no further. I don't see what the school depts. & PD could have done, they couldn't have removed Marissa from the home. The BPD could have arrested one of the adults if he or she were accused of DV, but since both mother and stepfather are being accused of beating the poor girl, arresting one wouldn't have made a difference, IMHO. There still would have been an abuser left behind.

From what I've seen they've also been as transparent as they can about it, given confidentiality rules. It's DHHS who hasn't been so forthcoming.

The reporting and follow-up of many agencies responsible for protecting minors needs to be totally reconfigured. Too many innocents are left in abusive situations, and forced to endure horrible torture all day every day of their lives. We know of many, but I wonder how many are invisible. The abusers are the ones who are responsible, but there has to be a much faster and more effective way to rescue.

I’m not sure this is allowed, is Ellen DeGeneres considered MSM?

I’m wearing navy blue today in honor of this beautiful girl who should be playing with her friends or reading a wonderful book right now and all of the other amazing babies gone too soon at the hands of adults who should have cherished and nurtured them[emoji174]

Attorney for Sharon Carrillo to seek bail reduction, cites spousal abuse
http://www.penbaypilot.com/article/...seek-bail-reduction-cites-spousal-abuse/99183

Friday, March 16, 2018 - 9:15am
The public defender of accused indifference murderer Sharon Carrillo, 33, has said he intends to file for a significant reduction in his client’s current $500,000 cash bail, citing a number of factors, including marital violence.
[.....]
MacLean said he plans to watch both video-recorded interrogations prior to requesting a bail hearing.

While court documents show that both Sharon and Julio Carrillo admitted to the sustained beatings and other brutal acts during their separate interviews the day of Marissa’s death, MacLean said he believes that a different picture will emerge than the one painted by the previous statements made by both Carrillos.
[.....]
Julio Carrillo’s lawyer, Steven Peterson, denied his client was ever violent toward Sharon Carrillo in a phone interview March 15, saying that although he was charged with domestic violence in Kentucky in 2000, he went through an anger management program and believed the case had been expunged.
[.....]
It has been reported that Sharon Carrillo is currently pregnant, a fact confirmed by Steven Peterson March 15.

According to MacLean, Sharon is of a limited intellectual capacity, which has made her current predicament even more difficult for her to handle.
[.....]
One thing still to be determined is where Sharon would go should her bail be reduced enough for her family to secure her release, something MacLean said they’re currently working on.

A conference is scheduled in Waldo County Superior Court March 16, at 1 p.m. which Julio Carrillo’s lawyer Steven Peterson said during a phone interview will likely focus on forensic mental examinations the state may request to be completed.
[.....]
Once ordered by the Court, forensic mental examinations must take place within 21 days

Thankyou for all the updates. This is going to be one of them long drawn out trials, I think. Its already started with the psych evaluation and claiming she was a battered wife.
I'm sorry but someone would have to kill me before I hurt any of my babies. NOTHING would make me do it, I would literally die saving them. Even if I had to drop them off and leave them at a church with a note, I would do. There is no excuse. Mums should be protectors not enablers.
Poor beautiful baby girl must have felt so trapped and scared to death.

This is sickening. Literally making me sick to my stomach. This poor girl. Both mom and step dad need to rot in jail.

Sharon Carrillo's attorney claims prosecutors did not follow protocol
http://www.wabi.tv/content/news/Sha...utors-did-not-follow-protocol--477778623.html

BELFAST, Maine (WABI) - An attorney for Sharon Carrillo, the mother accused of killing her 10-year-old daughter in Stockton Springs, says State Police and prosecutors tricked New York school officials into releasing information about Carrillo.

According to the Kennebec Journal, Carrillo's lawyer, Laura Shaw, says Assistant Attorney general Donald Macomber subpoenaed Carrillo's former boarding school asking for records, including a psychological evaluation.
[.....]
Shaw says the subpoena was not only invalid but quote, dishonest and deceitful because there was no April 6th court date scheduled.

Macomber told the paper he's reserving his comments for a hearing on the matter on Tuesday in Belfast.

I found out the hard way that police officers are allowed to lie during the course of an investigation to evoke a confession. Not sure if that extends to the prosecution using dirty tricks to build their case, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

"All in favor, please raise your hand. Opposed? It's unanimous of those present," said Sen. Roger Katz, (R) GOC Chair.
OPEGA continues working on its rapid response report on the state's handling of the deaths of two girls who allegedly were killed following abuse at hands of family members.
