Why would she and her lawyers be seeking an annulment instead of a divorce?

I'm willing to believe this woman was also abused and controlled by this man. She doesn't have the cold heartless demeanor you see from a lot of killers. But I guess I just can't understand it. I don't understand allowing yourself to date let alone marry a psychopath that abuses your children. I feel like maybe it's insensitive of me. But I chose to not date anyone who gave evidence of poor character. I would have rather been single. I don't know where the line is drawn between a woman being abused and a woman not stopping her children from being abused. It's not a woman's fault if her significant other abuses her. But it's her fault when he abuses the children in the home? What is expected?

I looked Niner, but this was all I found:

Hmmmm, not surprised. In the very few cases I've seen on this type request, separate trials have usually been granted. We'll see. The jury could always give separate verdicts on a trial with two suspects.

A couple of things I consider notable for Sharon Carrillo in the article above:

This argument is gonna be a tuff one, and the entire case is horrible.
It will be interesting to see how this particular part of the case will proceed, IMO.

BELFAST — State prosecutors assigned to the case of the State v. Sharon and Julio Carrillo have filed several motions with Waldo County Unified Court after Sharon Carrillo’s attorneys filed paperwork alleging that their client has intellectual limitations and was a victim of Julio Carrillo rather than a co-conspirator.

Zainea requests that the Court order Sharon Carrillo be further examined to determine her cognitive abilities, “with reference to issues of the voluntariness of her statements to law enforcement and her ability to voluntarily, knowingly and intelligently waive her Miranda rights.”

The document further specifies a request that an “inpatient neuropsychological examination be undertaken by the State Forensic Service.”

The motion was filed after attorneys for Sharon Carrillo submitted a Motion to Suppress.

In the Motion for Further Forensic Evaluation, Zainea references the Motion to Suppress, arguing that the State be allowed to use their own expert to examine Sharon Carrillo at the State Forensic Service.

A Motion in Limine filed by Zainea Feb. 4 was granted by Justice Murray Feb. 12, which had requested records from two schools Marissa Kennedy had attended.

2/8/19 Update: Sharon’s attorneys, Chris MacLean & Laura Shaw filed two separate motions Friday (2/8/19). One filing contains details that have not previously been released publicly, including descriptions of a photo recovered from Julio’s phone by Maine State Police that detail abuse of the child & her mother. MacLean also claims that the tactics used by detectives to interrogate Sharon in the days after Kennedy died were “coercive” in light of the new information filed today. As a result, MacLean, in the second document, is calling for all statements given by Sharon to law enforcement to be suppressed. Prosecutors have called for the Carrillos to be tried together, arguing it would be more efficient and they have asked the judge to order two separate juries. Sharon’s attorneys on Friday argued that the new evidence should preempt a separate trial. Banda said he does not object to a joint trial, and he did not file his own motions to sever or suppress evidence. He confirmed his client has discussed a possible plea agreement with the state.

The mother and stepfather accused of beating 10-year-old Marissa Kennedy to death last year will make an appearance in a Belfast courtroom Thursday morning.

Sharon Carrillo, 34, Marissa’s mother, and Julio Carrillo, 52, her stepfather, are scheduled to appear at the Waldo Judicial Center at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday for a hearing on motions filed by Sharon Carrillo’s attorneys earlier this year.

It is not clear if Justice Robert Murray will decide Thursday on whether or not the couple should be tried together later this year, or if the statements Sharon Carrillo made to investigators shortly after her daughter’s death will be admissible at trial.
