Found Deceased ME - Prescott Wright, 23, & Zachary Wells, 21, Kennebunkport, 20 Dec 2012

I wonder if they were standard life jackets, or the inflatable PFDs. If the latter, were they inflated? Just wondering ... lots of paddlers use inflatable.

I highly doubt that they waded to the Island wearing life jackets.
If no kayaks are missing, did someone take them there for a prank?
Was there just the one roommate?

did someone take them there for a prank?

Letting this idea play out in my head with known facts - clothing found, life jackets found, guys missing, no visible means of having gotten there.. the suggestion of someone taking them there and leaving them...

What kind of person might take 'em out, make them get half-naked, and then strand 'em, toss them their clothing and life jackets, holler good luck, leave 'em to fend for themselves...

sounds like an angry father to me. Any teenage girls report anything funky the night this happened?

IMHO JMO MOO ETC ETC ETC

Or some kind of frat prank?

Just want to say something here. I live in an area with a lot of river/lake sports. And EVERY year without fail, experienced boaters, rafters, swimmers and fishermen drown. Sometimes they jump in to the river to swim around or sometimes they fall in. In all cases that I can remember the life jacket was just sitting in the boat or laying uselessly on the bank. People take them off because they get in the way or because they are over confidant about their swimming abilities or they misjudge the risks of their environment.

Last year IIRC, some guy who had been going up and down the river for 40 years drowned. He had been a good swimmer as well and the life jacket was just a few feet away "in case of an emergency".

I just see this is: life jackets removed because of hypothermia or life jackets removed because of any of the other reasons listed above. I don't think there is any great mystery to do with this "clue".
JMO

You are so right! Every year we have people drown in our area lakes, too, and many of them have been around water all their lives, and are experienced swimmers.

They were probably already suffering from some hypothermia, where they felt warm while their cores cooled, so they removed them or didn't think that they were necessary. They also apparently removed their jackets and pants.

Has there been any confirmation on exactly how much alcohol was consumed? Just curious since they were two apparently otherwise healthy young men whose normal behavior wasn't so reckless as to go out into the freezing night.

That thought occurred to me also.

this is what first crossed my mind... how long is it estimated that they would have been outside in relation to where the clothing was found? could they really have had hypothermia? something just seems off... sad, it doesnt appear that this is going to have a good outcome...jmho..

Family and friends of a 23-year-old Barnstable man who disappeared 10 days ago in Maine appear convinced that he is dead.
In an obituary in today's Times, Prescott Wright's family describes him as “a lover of people” and a “builder of boats” who lived for the water.

There is a better picture of Prescott Wright than has been shown previously in the article linked above. Such a sad loss for these families to lose these young men. I can't put myself in their shoes to know how I would react. I just imagine it might be hard to accept they are gone less than 2 weeks after they disappeared. I wonder how a family comes to that so soon to already publish an obituary, albeit a short one, without concrete proof of death. Seems unusual, but who am I to judge.

No, it seems really creepy in my opinion. Most families would still be holding out hope. Britannee Drexe's mother believes she's still alive after 3 years. This is the first time I've ever heard of a family declaring someone dead this quickly, ever. JMO

I did some searching about these 2 boys and found Prescott Wright's facebook page....needless to say, he strikes me as a crazy adventurous type. I kind of presumed after seeing his page, that if his friend was anything like him, a few drinks in them would make them even more rambunctious to go out for a crazy cold night trip. Sad...

The two thoughts I had about possible scenarios are pretty simple, and probably pretty bad. My first thought was that I wondered if they had been using their boat building skills, and tried to put together a simple boat/kayak/canoe or something. They may have decided to test its seaworthiness, it wasn't very worthy, and they ended up in the water swimming to the wrong shore... while the pieces of the boat floated down stream.

The second one was that a friend took then out for a ride on his boat. The two were goofing around, while standing in the boat, and they hit a wave/sandbar or something that caused a big jolt and knocked them out of the boat, They started swimming to the wrong shore and the friend in the boat can't see where they are. He rides around for a while looking for them, not realizing they on the island already. He may have even gone back with a light to search for them in the water, and assumed they had drowned since he couldn't find them. He'd put the boat back and claim not to know anything. The other two stripped down to get out of the wet clothes, and maybe tried to swim back to the correct shore sine the boat wasn't coming.

I was thinking about what might have happened to these two young adventuresome guys. Going to school in that area and having friends in Kennebunkport the topic of the ghost in the lighthouse on Goat Island may have come up. With shows like Ghost adventures and Ghost hunters....maybe these guys thought it would be fun to go over to the lighthouse in the middle of the night and see if they could see a ghost. They were just up the street...about a mile from The Ramp restaurant...maybe they knew people there or did find a boat from someone or just took one...they say in the articles that they didn't find any boats or know of any missing ones..but with summer homes there they could have easily just taken a boat (row boat, kayak, canoe) from someone's backyard.

Low tide that evening was at 1115pm so they had a few hours that they could have walked over to the island, but most likely since they found two life preservers that they took a boat.

A person in the house that they were staying came down at 4am to turn off a radio, so they were gone by that time, but don't know when exactly they were last seen.

High tide was at 4am. Maybe they got over to the island, didn't tie the boat or capsized and got wet, couldn't get in the lighthouse, were getting cold quickly, and got hypothermia. The clothes were found together with the life preservers and footwear. Maybe they thought they would be better off getting out of the wet clothes rather than having them on....don't know...they were drunk, cold and on a deserted island.....they also don't say whether the clothes were in piles or strewn about in an area. The island is about 4 acres.

I thought maybe they took off their wet clothes and thought they could run to the lighthouse...maybe they did that and couldn't get in.....maybe it felt warmer being in the water than in the cold air.....we don't know what transpired unfortunately.

But I do think that a possibility is the Ghost hunting prospect...and taking a boat from someones yard.

Also, maybe they didn't want to sleep and went down to see if anything was going on at the restaurant/bar....The Ramp is very popular....maybe they thought some friends were working there that night?

I feel like there wasn't any malice towards them by others....just really bad circumstances for not well thought out decisions.....

Thats interesting.. in college, we thought about going to do something crazy like this after about half our group had been drinking. It was a ghost hunt in an abandoned factory that "lured" us, but we ultimately chose not to because it was so far away and the DDs did not want to drive that far. I think this is a very possible scenario.

IMHO - without proof they went into the water I can't believe they ran an obituary like 10 days after they disappeared and are now 'burying him' so to speak.

His parents must be psychic or else know something nobody else does, or else they for some reason just wanted to put closure on the part of their life that they shared with him and move on ASAP.

I realize nobody grieves the same, but again IMHO it's not even time to grieve yet.. it's only been two weeks.... look at all the threads here on WS where nobody is rushing to declare their missing loved one dead... so odd, IMHO...

And, now Zach's obit has run -

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/bu...uary.aspx?n=zachary-james-wells&pid=162109432

"ZACHARY JAMES WELLS KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine - We lost our beautiful son, brother, nephew, grandson and friend Zach in the early hours of Dec. 20, 2012, to the pristine waters off the coast of Maine. Zach was born on March 14, 1991, in Burlington, to Stephanie and James Wells. From the moment of his birth, Zachary made his presence known. He was a force to be reckoned with, a bright light whose laughter and love were extinguished all too early. The gigantic space that Zach filled is now a void left to be furnished by the multitude of memories held by those who knew and loved him. Zach cultivated relationships and his many friends were of great importance to him."

This whole thing about burying a loved one within days of a mysterious disappearance just seems very, very, very odd to me. Can anyone remember someone who's done things this quickly before?
