ORLANDO -- During Day 18, jurors actually got their hands of a piece of evidence, and a mother-daughter exchange everyone had been waiting for.

In a small plastic baggy, jurors passed a small heart-shaped sticker one by one. Juror number 5, an older woman, held it the longest -- shaking it and feeling it through the baggy.

The sticker was found near Caylee's remains.

Will Judge Allow New Casey Witness?
Defense Tries To Add To Witness List

"Snip? POSTED: 5:52 am EDT June 16, 2011

The defense will begin to argue their case on Thursday morning at 9 a.m.
Watch Live on WESH.COM

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Casey Anthony's defense team has asked Judge Belvin Perry to allow an additional name on their list of witnesses.

Perry is expected to decide whether to let the defense call a man convicted of kidnapping, who Anthony's attorneys claim received a call from George Anthony ahead of Caylee's disappearance.

Thompson will be deposed to determine whether he is connected to the murder case.

George Anthony's attorney said it's unlikely Vasco will take the stand.

Judge denies acquittal; defense introduces convict Vasco Thompson
The defense filing in court documents says Vasco Thompson is a 'recently discovered witness through the ongoing efforts of defense investigators'
"Snip" By Anthony Colarossi, Orlando Sentinel

3:11 p.m. EDT, June 15, 2011

On the same day Chief Judge Perry denied a defense motion for acquittal, Casey Anthony's team introduced a new person to the murder case — an Orlando felon with a violent past, Vasco Thompson.

Thompson, according to the filing, "was connected to George Anthony through his cell phone records." Records show four calls between George and Thompson on July 14, 2008

Thompson refused interview attempts by the defense and called law enforcement when questioned, the document shows.
Due to the recently discovered and unexpected relationship between George Anthony and Thompson, their cellphone calls, and Thompson's "violent criminal history," the defense claims "good cause is shown for the late disclosure of this witness."

Casey Anthony: Unfounded conclusion? Mystery man? What next?
"Snip" posted by halboedeker on June, 15 2011

Dr. Werner Spitz, a forensic pathologist who disagrees with Dr. Jan Garavaglia’s conclusion that Caylee Anthony’s manner of death was homicide.

Spitz told Pipitone: “I don’t know who put the duct tape on her. I don’t know the identity of that person. That would have been fine if somebody specifically had fingerprints on the duct tape. Well, that’s missing. I don’t know who did that. … The duct tape would have come off when the body decomposed, because there was no bond of the duct tape with the bone.”
Spitz said he will travel to Orlando on Thursday and could testify on Friday or Saturday.

The defense wants to learn more about Vasco Thompson, who was sentenced to prison for kidnapping. “According to the defense, this man had an unexplained relationship with George Anthony.

Richard Hornsby predicted that the defense team would put its forensic experts on first, then possibly former meter reader Roy Kronk and Anthony family members. Hornsby predicted that Casey Anthony, if she testifies, will go last.

Transcript shows why Casey Anthony judge allowed bone chewing details
Judge Perry says defense 'opened a can of worms'

"Snip" By Anthony Colarossi June 15, 2011

A 7-page transcript of the conversation captures several interesting points.

Here's one part of the exchange:

Defense attorney Cheney Mason: "Talking about animal chewing is not probative of any issue in this case … It's scandalous or shocking and emotional, but it doesn't prove anything. There's no question that the child is dead, that these are her bones. But to start talking about animal chewing, I think is inflammatory and we object to it."

Assistant State Attorney Jeff Ashton: "It is my understanding that the defense's position is that these bones were moved, placed into this location at some later date. The fact that the bones were scattered by animals and chewed on is probative of the length of time that they had been present."

Judge Perry: "Well, but for your argument and suggestion that somebody kept the bones and moved them about, I would sustain your objection. But in view of the fact that that's your theory, that Mr. [Roy] Kronk took the bones and took them somewhere and kept them, it has relevancy in that standpoint."

Soon after, the parties discussed what defense attorney Jose Baez said regarding Kronk during his opening statement. Mason reminds the others that Baez said "the bones were dragged and moved."

Later he adds, "Does it prove that defense counsel made an opening statement decision that may have not been prudent? Perhaps."

Perry said, "Before Mr. Baez made his statement, I told you I would…sustain the objection," Perry said. "But when you talk about somebody moved and kept bones for the purpose of getting a reward, I mean … it's a whole line of questioning that you've just opened a can of worms up on."

3 years since Caylee was last seen alive
Defense to call 1st witness in Casey Anthony trial

"Snip" Thursday, June 16, 2011

LIVE daily chat & updates from the courtroom http://www.cfnews13.com/casey-chat

The last photo showing Caylee Marie Anthony alive and well was taken on June 15, 2008. It was Father's Day, and her grandmother, Cindy Anthony, took Caylee to Mount Dora to visit Cindy's father.

Casey's parents said Casey disappeared with Caylee after that date. They recovered Casey's car from a towing company and said it smelled like a dead body. When they found Casey after she'd been missing a month, she told them a nanny kidnapped Caylee.

Detectives said Casey told them multiple lies about her daughter's whereabouts. Investigators said Caylee had been suffocated by duct tape wrapped around her head.

Casey's attorneys contend Caylee accidentally drowned, and that George Anthony, helped her dump the body. He denied that on the first day of testimony. http://www.cfnews13.com/article/news/2011/may/250528/

Day 20: Casey Anthony's defense calls 1st witness, unveils new evidence
"Snip" By Jacqueline Fell, Adam Longo and Kelli Cook, Team Coverage
Last Updated: Thursday, June 16, 2011

Casey's lawyers filed new pictures, video and a "newly discovered" surprise witness.

Cindy Anthony allegedly sold the same photos to the TV program "48 Hours."

The videos are said to show the bedrooms of Caylee and Casey Anthony, taken by private investigator J. Lyons.

Day 20 witnesses

Gerardo Bloise
Bloise said he looked in the trunk of Lazzaro's car on July 23, 2008, to check for blood. He found none.

He then went to the Anthonys' home to collect clothes from Caylee and Casey's bedrooms, he did not check master bedroom.

Heather SeubertA chief agent at the FBI's lab in Quantico, Virginia, Seubert said she worked in the lab's DNA unit in 2008. She is an expert in serology, the study of bodily fluids, including blood.

Seubert said she tested the spare tire cover and part of the lining from the trunk of Casey's Pontiac Sunfire for blood. Both tests came out negative, and no DNA profile could be generated.

Seubert said, no bodily fluids detected on clothing found near Caylee's remains, and admitted that being out in the elements for an extended period of time would potentially destroy some DNA evidence.

Mistake, Objections Spark Fireworks In Casey Trial

Court will resume on Friday at 9:00am.

Updated: 5:39 pm EDT June 16, 2011

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- The courtroom atmosphere became heated on Thursday as Anthony's defense questioned its second witness. Objections, a defense mistake, and the judge's frustration, created fireworks inside the Orange County courtroom.

The trial became heated when the defense questioned Seubert about a shovel that Casey borrowed from a neighbor.

"It's meaningless, it's not relevant," said prosecutor Jeff Ashton.

"Then why is the shovel in evidence?" defense attorney Jose Baez asked.

"It's not relevant because…" Ashton attempted to say.

"Mr. Ashton, Mr. Ashton, calm down. Sit down for a second," said Judge Belvin Perry.

Then, Baez mistakenly asked the witness about a blanket, which was not entered into evidence.

"My apologies, the blanket that was just described is not in evidence. I move to strike," said Baez.

Judge Perry instructed the jury to disregard that part of the testimony.

WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer says those kinds of mistakes hurt the defense's case.

Ask The Judge: Rules To Convict, Court Etiquette
Judge O.H. Eaton Jr., WESH Legal Analyst

"Snip" POSTED: 2:05 pm EDT June 16, 2011

Editor's Note: As part of ongoing extended coverage of the Casey Anthony trial, WESH 2 News legal analyst Judge O.H. Eaton Jr. is answering questions about the case. Do you have a question you would like Eaton to answer? Send it via email orlnews@ibsys.com<orlnews@ibsys.com>; Please include your name and city.

Questions To Convict?

Dear Judge Eaton: What are the questions the jurors have to answer in order to convict. Are there different questions depending on the charge? -- Sheri, Chuluota, Fla.

Every crime is composed of elements. Each of the elements must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The jury will be instructed that the state must prove the following elements before returning a verdict of guilty of first-degree premeditated murder:

1.Victim is dead.

2.The death was caused by the criminal act of the defendant.

3.There was a premeditated killing of victim.

Killing with premeditation is killing after consciously deciding to do so. The decision must be present in mind at the time of the killing. The law does not fix the exact period of time that must pass between the formation of the premeditated intent to kill and the killing. The period of time must be long enough to allow reflection by the defendant. The premeditated intent to kill must be formed before the killing. The question of premeditation is a question of fact to be determined by the jury from the evidence. It will be sufficient proof of premeditation if the circumstances of the killing and the conduct of the accused convince the jury beyond a reasonable doubt of the existence of premeditation at the time of the killing. The jury will also be given instructions for the lesser included offenses to murder such as second-degree murder and manslaughter. Other instructions include how to weigh the credibility of witnesses, how to consider expert testimony, and rules for deliberations, among others. All of Florida’s standard jury instructions can be accessed on the Supreme Court of Florida’s website. -- Judge O.H. Eaton

Defense Enters Day 2 Of Its Case In Casey Anthony Trial

"Snip" Updated: 7:05 am EDT June 17, 2011

The defense enters its second day of calling witnesses as Casey Anthony’s murder trial continues on day 32. Early Friday morning, court watchers got into a brawl outside the courtroom while standing in line. One spectator told WFTV that a man put him in a headlock.

Jose Baez will try to recover from a few mistakes he made as he began to lay out his evidence on Thursday.

Baez is expected to call more of the prosecution's forensic witnesses to the stand.

Baez questioned an FBI DNA analyst about whether investigators believed Casey and brother, Lee Anthony, had a sexual relationship.

In a mis-step he asked about a blanket that's not in evidence, “My apologies, the blanket that was just described is not in evidence. I move to strike,” said Baez.

Baez spent the entire day on Thursday attacking prosecutors evidence. Sheaffer said Baez will have to move along much quicker, or he can expect Judge Belvin Perry to intervene.
