Defense enters Day 2 in Casey Anthony trial

The defense will enter its second day of calling witnesses as the murder trial of Casey Anthony, who's accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter.
Baez is expected to call more of the prosecution's forensic witnesses to the stand Friday.
In Baez opening statement on Day 1, he claimed Caylee drowned in her grandparents' backyard swimming pool. Thursday marked exactly three years since that day.

Padilla and the crew were shooting footage for a two-hour special edition of “Justice with Judge Jeanine.” And, yes, that footage will be in the program at 9 p.m. Saturday, a Fox News spokeswoman said.

Potential Casey Witness: I Don't Know George Anthony
Man, Attorney Holds News Conference

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Vasco De Gamma Thomspon, a man Casey Anthony's defense attorneys asked Judge Belvin Perry to add as a witness in her murder trial, denied any connection to the Anthony family at a news conference on Friday.


Vasco said at the news conference that he did not obtain his current phone number until February 2009.

"It's our opinion that it's just one last attempt to create reasonable doubt," Morgan said.

George Anthony's attorney, Mark Lippman, said his client believes that the number in question belonged to his former employer, a security company, when he called it in Orange County.

Court Changes Seating Pass Policy After Fist Fight


According to a court spokeswoman:
"Effective (Friday), individuals who want to get into the courtroom to watch the State v. Casey Anthony trial should line up at 4:00 p.m. for tickets for the following day.

Monday - Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturdays at 1:00 p.m., the Court will take the names of the first 50 people in line. Those individuals return the following day at 8:00 a.m. with identification. They will receive a pass to enter the courtroom at that time.

For Monday testimony, the court will take the names of the individuals Saturdays at 1:00 p.m."

Bug expert testifies in Casey Anthony trial

ORLANDO, FL -- A defense bug expert testified Friday in the murder trial of Casey Anthony that he would expect to find at least hundreds of flies and a distinct human decomposition fluid stain around a dead body left in a car trunk.
Huntington testified Friday that the only flies he found inside the trash bag taken from Anthony's trunk were those usually found in household garbage and not the ones attracted to the early stages of decomposition.

By Ann (CNN) -- Here in the land of Mickey, where parents lavish time and money to immerse their little ones.
At Fields BMW in suburban Winter Park, no one has switched channels in the customer lounge since testimony began four weeks ago.

"I don't think anybody's brave enough to grab the remote," said Whitney Lore, the cashier.

The drama sucked in Trevor Ball this week as he waited for his wife's BMW to be serviced. He fired off a Casey update to her by text: The prosecution rests.

Half the people who turn on their TVs in Orlando during the daytime are watching the trial, says Steve Hyvonen, news director at WKMG, a CNN affiliate. That usually only happens here when a hurricane hits.


'A tweet a minute'
O.J. Simpson's murder trial was a gavel-to-gavel cable news extravaganza; 17 years later, social media fuels the Anthony case. iPads are ubiquitous in court and the blogging, tweeting and online chatting comes fast and furious in the courtroom's balcony seats.

"A tweet a minute," says Jacqueline Fell, a producer at CF13, Orlando's cable news channel. "It's nonstop, gavel to gavel."

Boslet, the Orlando Magazine editor, hired "Marinade Dave" Knechel, a local blogger and armchair expert on the case, to cover the trial. A freelance graphic artist who takes care of his elderly parents and two cats, Knechel had never worked as a reporter. He started his blog to share his secret marinade recipes and human interest stories.

Blogger "Marinade Dave" Knechel points to the spot where Caylee Anthony's body was found.He drove one day by Jay Blanchard Park in Orlando and saw the dive teams searching for Caylee. He posted an entry on his blog and started to gain a following, including Stan Strickland, the original judge in the case.

Difference In Jurors, Alternates

An alternate juror is available to be substituted for a regular member of the jury panel in the event the regular juror becomes ill or has to be excused for some other reason. Florida law requires 12 jurors to decide a capital case, so if there were no alternate jurors and a juror had to be excused, the case would have to be tried again. There are possible double-jeopardy problems that can arise if the juror was improperly excused. Different judges handle the alternate juror situation differently. Some judges, including me, designate the first twelve jurors as the regular jurors and the others as alternates. Huntington told Ashton on Friday that insect evidence from Caylee's recovery scene indicated that the body had been moved to the woods after probably decomposing two or three days, a timeline more or less consistent with the state's theory.

He also confirmed that the body had likely been left at that wooded location months earlier, another statement supportive of the state's theory.

Huntington said he largely agreed with an explanation about insect findings included in a report by Neal Haskell, the prosecution's insect expert.

When Ashton asked about Huntington's own decomposition study involving pigs placed in the trunk of a car, he noted that the pigs were not wrapped in blankets and bags the way Caylee's remains were thought to have been placed in her mother's car.

"Why didn't you wrap your pigs in a blanket?" Ashton asked, eliciting laughs around the courtroom.

Anthony Defense Threatened With ContemptJudge Upset With Failure To Tell Prosecutors Of Planned Testimony

Perry said to Baez. "This was not some inadvertent slip."

He ordered Rodriguez off the stand, but said he will be allowed to testify on Monday, after prosecutors have a chance to interview him. Perry said the law would appear to authorize him the right to exclude the testimony, but said that would be too drastic a step.

"It would be totally unfair to Ms. Anthony to have his testimony excluded on this critical issue," he said.

But he said he would be watching Baez' conduct closely and will consider contempt proceedings at the end of the trial.
"I am not making any promises or warranties about what I will do if it happens a second time with this witness," Perry scolded Baez.

Casey Cries As Expert Talks About Caylee's Skull In Trial
Casey Anthony's murder trial continued on Saturday, and as a forensic expert testified about Caylee's autopsy, Casey became emotional.

First witness was Dr. William Rodriguez. He's a forensic anthropologist. Rodriguez said it would be impossible to determine the exact position of duct tape on a corpse. Because tape loses its stickiness, it may have shifted, and animals could have come into contact with the body.

Then, Chief Judge Belvin Perry threatened contempt of court against Baez for intentionally violating the court's order for trying to get a witness to give opinions that weren't previously disclosed.


Dr. Werner Spitz was then called to the stand.
Spitz said the autopsy done on Caylee was "shoddy."

When prosecutor Jeff Ashton took over for the cross examination, he attacked Spitz's testimony that the state's autopsy was botched.

"When you say Dr. G’s failure to remove skull botched autopsy, you are referring to the way you think it should be done,” said Ashton.

Ashton asked Spitz if he broke Caylee's skull when he opened it. But, Spitz replied, "I didn't know I broke it."

The case will resume Monday at 9 a.m.

Spitz has been an expert witness in several high-profile cases, including that of O.J. Simpson. He says it was a failure that Caylee's head was not opened during the official autopsy. Spitz conducted a second autopsy afterward.

ORLANDO, Florida (CNN) -- Duct tape found on Caylee Anthony's skull was placed there after the toddler's body had decomposed, not before she died, a forensic pathologist testified Saturday.

Dr. Werner Spitz said he believes the tape was placed on the body long after the flesh had disappeared to hold the jaw bone on, perhaps because someone wanted to move it.

Spitz also criticized the Orange County medical examiner, Dr. Jan Garavaglia, for conducting what he termed a "shoddy autopsy" by failing to cut Caylee's skull open to look inside.

MONDAY
Two FBI experts testified about duct tape and hair.

TUESDAY

An artist testified he tattooed "Bella Vita" on Casey Anthony's back July 2, 2008.

An investigator testified she found the backings of heart-shaped stickers in Casey's bedroom. FBI analyst testified she found what appeared to be the image of a heart shape on a piece of duct tape with Caylee's remains.

Jurors saw an aerial photo demonstrating the short distance between the Anthony home and woods were Caylee's remains were discovered.



WEDNESDAY
State rested their case.

Anthony's defense team acquittal denied.


THURSDAY

Heather Seubert, an FBI blood and DNA expert, confirmed that DNA tests showed Anthony's father and brother are not Caylee's father.
Anthony's DNA and blood were not found on samples from her car, a shovel and duct tape.

FBI expert Lorie Gottesman said she found no heart-shaped residue or outline on the duct tape.


FRIDAY
Tim Huntington testified that insect evidence in Casey Anthony's car trunk made him doubt a body had been there.

Huntington, said the waste in the trunk contained no apparent food sources.
