Utility Worker Who Found Remains Called In Tip In August
Thursday, December 18, 2008 9:50:04 PM

<snipped>
Shortly after the press conference, News 13 received a statement from Todd Black, Jose Baez’s spokesman.

“This is a perfect example of why the public and the media should not be pre-judging this case. And Casey Anthony should be given the presumption of innocence until after all the facts and all the information is revealed.

There is absolutely no doubt that law enforcement is continuing to withhold vital information, and it would be probably be a good idea for the meter reader to retain an attorney.”

Investigators are expected to be back today at the woods area near the Anthony family home in east Orange County where the remains of a child -- a child thought to be Caylee Marie Anthony -- were discovered a week ago.

Local and federal investigators continued to pull brush and sift through the woods Wednesday and said their search area had grown to about an acre.

"This morning and through this afternoon, they continue to find additional items," sheriff's spokesman Capt. Angelo Nieves said about noon Wednesday.

Worker Who Found Skull Near Anthony Home Phoned In Previous Tips
More Skeletal Remains Discovered; Search Site Expands
POSTED: Thursday, December 18, 2008
UPDATED: 9:23 pm EST December 18, 2008

Orange County sheriff's Capt. Angelo Nieves said the utility worker, who was reading water meters when he made the discovery, phoned in the tips on consecutive days -- Aug. 11, 12 and 13 -- saying he saw a bag on the side of the road. The area the worker was referring to is the same area where he later found the skull.

A sheriff's deputy responded to the area after one of the tips but cleared the scene after a brief visit in which the bag was apparently not located. Nieves said the sheriff's office is investigating the deputy's response.

Deputies Say "Significant Skeletal Remains" Found
Thursday, December 18, 2008 – updated: 7:03 pm EST December 18, 2008

The sheriff's office said the meter reader had called in tips about the exact same area to Crimeline and the sheriff's office three times in August, two weeks before Tropical Storm Fay hit and flooded much of Central Florida, including the area where the remains were found last week.

The sheriff's office said it is focusing on its own deputies who came out on August 11 and 13 to inspect the scene. It's unknown what the area looked like on August 11, the first day the meter reader called and reported seeing a gray bag.

Sheriff’s officials said the man called Crimeline on August 12th. A detective checked records and determined the area already had been checked by a cadaver dog.

The meter reader isn't a suspect in the girl's disappearance but the sheriff's office was investigating what led him to call and how deputies responded in August, said Capt. Angelos Nieves, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

"There are a lot of questions about the thoroughness of that response," Nieves said.

Man who found skull in Caylee case sent police tips months ago
December 18, 2008

KioMarie Cruz, Casey Anthony's childhood friend, also told police to investigate the same wooded area near Hidden Oaks Elementary School a month before the meter reader, according to CNN affiliate WFTV.

In an interview with detectives, according to WFTV, Cruz said that she and Anthony "pretty much used to hang out there most of our time," would "snack on food for hours" and went there to "get away from our parents."

The sheriff's office followed up on that tip, but the wooded area was covered in floodwaters, preventing a search. Nieves said the water may have been present at the time of the meter reader's tips as well.

Did investigators find Caylee Anthony's book at search site?

One of the 171 crime scene photos released Thursday by the Orange County Sheriff's Office shows something that appears to be a book. The sheriff's office would not comment on the photo. Here's a photo of Caylee reading a book in a video shot June 15 -- shortly before she disappeared. (ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE / December 18, 2008)

On a day filled with developments in the case of missing toddler Caylee Marie Anthony -- including news that the man who discovered human remains last week called in the same tip three times in August -- a single photograph brought forth as many questions as it answered.

A sheriff's official offered this outline of the three tips by the utility worker in August:

-- On Aug. 11, the meter reader called the sheriff's office communication center to report a bag on the "right side" of the road near the intersection of Suburban and Hopespring drives. The meter reader was not there when a deputy arrived. The officer cleared the scene.

-- On Aug. 12, the worker called Crimeline, which collect tips on unsolved crimes. That information was documented and sent to a detective, who made a note that the area had been searched by a cadaver dog and the tip was closed out.

-- On Aug. 13, after the worker called the communication center again, two deputies responded to the area -- each arriving separately -- and they met with the meter reader. At least one deputy checked the woods and cleared the scene for a second time.
