Caylee Anthony: Experts reach different conclusions on autopsy
posted by halboedeker on Jun 22, 2009 9:01:43 AM
<snipped>
Dr. Jan Garavaglia determined that the toddler was a victim of homicide and noted that duct tape was placed on the child's face before decomposition.

"The report suggests but does not conclude Caylee suffocated with that tape over her mouth," NBC's Kerry Sanders reported. His report was a preview of what we're likely to hear about forensics at the trial. Casey Anthony is charged with the murder of Caylee, her daughter.

"Forensics is likely to be the key evidence that a jury considers," Sanders said from Orlando. "In a case of science, it is which expert do you believe?"

"Today" talked to two experts. Dr. Werner Spitz, a defense pathologist, said, "There is nothing that I know that puts the lid on this, that tells you that there was a murder here. Everything, as far as I know, is in question."

NBC also asked Dr. Cyril Wecht, a forensic expert, to analyze the autopsy report. He speculated that the child suffered if she suffocated. Suffocation "would be the most likely way in which you would expect an infant, a young child to be murdered," he said. "It's easily accomplished, obviously, and would leave no telltale marks."

Casey Anthony: WKMG finds defense team unimpressed by autopsy
posted by halboedeker on Jun 20, 2009 7:35:41 AM
<snipped>
Kobilinsky dismissed the finding. "It is not clear how the child died, and if we don't know how the child died, we really can't determine whether or not it was a homicide," Kobilinsky said.

Kobilinsky said there was no evidence of drugs in the child's remains. But Pipitone noted that only hair and bone could be tested -- and so exposure to drugs couldn't be ruled out.

Kobilinsky noted Caylee's hyoid bone wasn't found and that would have been examined to see if there was strangulation. But Pipitone added that the hyoid bone in a child could be so soft that it might not break in strangulation.

And what of duct tape applied to Caylee's face before decomposition? "That indicates a homicide, not a suicide, not an accidental, not a natural death," Pipitone said.

Kobilinsky disagreed. "That is not necessarily the case," he said. "If, for example, the child died as the result of accidental trauma and then, subsequently, for whatever reason, somebody took the child and did whatever was done involving plastic bags and duct tape."

Prosecutors Want Photos Of Casey Anthony's Tattoo

Prosecutors want permission to go into the jail to take pictures of a tattoo Casey Anthony got two weeks after her daughter, Caylee, disappeared.

Eyewitness News previously reported about the tattoo on Casey's back, which reads "La Vita Bella," which is Italian for "The Beautiful Life."

The state believes it could be important to their case.

PROSECUTORS WANT STOLEN CHECK TRIAL MOVED UP
Prosecutors want the judge to schedule Casey's trial involving stolen checks before her murder trial.

The defense convinced the judge last year to postpone Casey's trial on charges she stole checks and cashed them to buy beer, food and her infamous white sunglasses.

Now that her murder trial could be a year off, prosecutors want to move forward on the lesser charges.

Casey Anthony case: Prosecutors want trial date set in fraud case
The state wants the trial set within the next 60 days.
5:08 PM EDT, June 22, 2009
<snipped>
Prosecutors want the fraud case against Casey Anthony to go to trial within the next two months, according to a request filed today by the state.

Anthony, 23, is charged with more than a dozen fraud charges, including fraudulent use of personal identification information, forgery of a check and uttering a forged check.

Prosecutors don't want wait to resolve the fraud case with the murder case. Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie.

Last month, attorneys said the murder trial won't likely happen until next year.

"Given the complexities of the two cases, it is unreasonable to allow the forgery case to languish another year without a resolution," Assistant State Attorney Frank George wrote in the two-page request.

No trial date has been set yet.

Prosecutors have asked that Casey Anthony, who is charged with killing her daughter, face check fraud charges before she goes on trial in the murder case.

Prosecutors filed a request Tuesday asking that Anthony go on trial for the fraud charges within the next two months.

Anthony is charged with more than a dozen fraud charges, including fraudulent use of personal identification information, forgery of a check and uttering a forged check.

Last month, attorneys said the murder trial won't likely happen until next year.

Casey Anthony's tattoo artist speaks out
Tattoo artist Danny Knight talked about Casey Anthony in a TV interview.

The owner of the tattoo parlor where Casey Anthony got inked after her daughter went missing, spoke on a national news show recently to discuss his interaction with her.

Danny Knight, owner of Cast Iron Tattoo, told Nancy Grace that Casey Anthony spoke only briefly of Caylee during a visit to his Orlando shop. She told Knight the same story she'd told her parents, boyfriend and friends -- Caylee was with the nanny.

While making an appointment to get a third tattoo, Casey Anthony told Knight she would bring Caylee with her to the next appointment. However, Casey Anthony was jailed and never got the tattoo.

Caylee Anthony to 'Jon & Kate Plus 8': Children as props
posted by halboedeker on Jun 24, 2009 9:49:20 AM
<snipped>
You see the unsettling trend in some of the most-discussed stories these days.

Poor Caylee Anthony, just 2, was discarded like trash and left to rot.

Adults have stepped forward to explain these situations. Jon and Kate Gosselin have aired their troubles several times on their shows. Grandparents George and Cindy Anthony have toured news programs. Adult friends praised the Heathrow family at a funeral Monday.

But all too often, children have become supporting players or disposable backdrops to selfish adults.

It's a trend that's a disaster for our culture. Ignore or shortchange children, the country will suffer in the long term. They are not props. They are the future.

What does it say about a culture that doesn't recognize its greatest gift, its children, and treat them as such?

Casey Anthony Case: 'Mommy's Little Girl' author defends title, book
3:06 PM EDT, June 25, 2009
<snipped>
Among the most-frequent complaints:

1. A book is premature before Casey Anthony's murder trial.

"Maybe we shouldn't have any news stories, either," Fanning said today from her home in Texas. "If it's wrong to do this, then it's wrong to have newspaper stories, magazine stories and TV reports. You can't wait on the vagaries of the justice system."

2. The Anthonys will profit from the book.

"A lot of people in the general public seem to believe to write a book like this, you have to purchase rights," Fanning said. "Not true. It's no more true of writers who work for newspapers. People make the assumption I put money in the Anthonys' pocket. It's not true, and it's not ethical. There were enough people to talk to. I could round out what was available from documentation."

3. The title is disrespectful to Caylee.

"Some people are upset by the title," Fanning said. "I didn't pick the title, but I thought it was a good title. No matter how horrendous a mother might be, that child is always mommy's little girl. Children love without any limitation."

4. She is profiting off the tragedy.

"I'm making my living," Fanning said. "That's it. This is what I do to get my paycheck. I write books."

Fanning said she couldn't discuss her conclusion because lawyers are looking over the book before its publication.

"In all my books, there's an afterword, and I give my opinion," she said. "And it's there in this book."

Key court date set in Casey Anthony civil case
June 26, 2009 4:19 PM
<snipped>
Lawyers for "nanny" Zenaida Gonzales have filed a motion blasting a private investigator who worked for both Casey Anthony's parents and defense attorney Jose Baez.

P.I. Dominic Casey was a no show at a recent deposition scheduled by Gonzales's lawyers. He claimed information he received while working the case is privileged.

But lawyers for Gonzales strongly disagree saying in a four-page letter to the court that Dominic Casey is "misguided and misinformed."

They accuse him of skirting the real issues with an "unfounded personal attack" against their firm.

At a hearing in September, Gonzales's attorneys will ask a judge to hold the Mr. Casey in contempt of court for not showing at the deposition.

At the same hearing, lawyers will ask the judge to force Casey's father, mother and brother to answer tough questions in the civil case depositions.

In April, when George, Cindy and Lee were deposed, they refused to answer questions they said would affect Casey's criminal cases.

The hearing on these matters is set for September 9th at 3:15PM.

Taxpayers May Pay More Money For Kronk's Legal Fees

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- The case against Casey Anthony could cost taxpayers more money.

An Orange County meter reader, who found a child's remains that later turned out to be Caylee Anthony's body on December 11, is expected to ask the county for more money to pay his attorney fees.

The county has already given Kronk at least $10,000 for his legal expenses.

Legal Costs Rise To $15,000 For Orange County

In a split vote Tuesday, Orange County commissioners approved spending more taxpayer money for Roy Kronk's legal representation.

Commissioners decided to spend an additional $2,500 to pay the lawyer for the former meter reader who discovered Caylee Anthony's remains while on duty.

That brings the total now to $15,000 in taxpayer money paid to Kronk's lawyer since December.

Kronk has faced depositions about what he saw as well as requests from Anthony's defense attorneys for phone records.

Casey Anthony: Nancy Grace plans two programs on Cindy
posted by halboedeker on Jun 29, 2009 3:40:26 PM

Cindy Anthony is about to draw increased scrutiny from HLN's Nancy Grace.

Here's the program's title: "Nancy Grace Investigates: Raw & Uncensored Cindy Anthony Caught on Tape!"

The plan, for now, is a two-parter. You can catch Part 1 on Friday and Part 2 next Monday. Each part will show at 8 p.m. and repeat at 10 p.m. each night.

HLN is billing the program as "a special inside look at the mother of accused killer Casey Anthony." The program will draw on Cindy's angry deposition in Zenaida Gonzalez's defamation suit against Casey.

A meter reader, who found a child's remains that later turned out to be Caylee Anthony's body on December 11, will get more tax dollars to deal with the legal issues that have come up because of the case against Casey Anthony.

Orange County commissioners approved Roy Kronk's request for an additional $2,500 Tuesday morning, which brings the total of tax dollars spent on his legal fees to at least $12,500.

However, the commissioners say if Kronk's attorney wants more money in the future, he will have to speak before the board to explain why he needs more cash.

Orange leaders split on legal costs, strategy in Casey Anthony case
Leaders approved an additional $2,500 to pay for Roy Kronk's legal fees in the Casey Anthony case.

"This case has no limit," said Commissioner Mildred Fernandez. "It's a taxpayer issue."

The total tab for utility worker Roy Kronk's defense now comes to $15,000. Commissioners said this high-profile case, which now involves a death-penalty trial for the girl's mother Casey Anthony, could drag out and prove terribly costly.

However, County Mayor Rich Crotty said of Kronk, a county worker, "he's our guy," noting that "he did the right thing" and that his efforts likely saved taxpayers "a ton of money" by ending a costly search effort. The county elected to pay for Kronk to get a lawyer after it was clear Anthony's attorney's and others would want to question him.

But Commisioner Fred Brummer said he was primarily concerned that Kronk's lawyer was fighting a request to see his client's cell phone records.

"We should not be trying to suppress the evidence," Brummer said, adding that the scrutiny into a front-line county worker's private affairs was acceptable. "That's a problem with life."

Orange Leaders Split On Legal Costs, Strategy in Casey Anthony Case

Orange County leaders approved another $2,500 payment this morning to the lawyer of the county worker who discovered the body of Caylee Anthony, but commissioners raised vocal concerns about the escalating costs and legal strategy in the case that has attracted national media scrutiny.

Crotty agreed, though, that any future payments to Kronk's attorney would need a full board discussion; today's payment was included on a consent agenda, which rarely gets debated. But Crotty objected to the idea of requiring Kronk himself to be present to defend any future requests.

Some commissioners worried aloud about what message their squabble about legal fees would send to workers and whether it would discourage them from doing the right thing, as they agreed Kronk did when he pushed investigators to check out what he feared could be the body of a missing child.

"Will they think twice?" Commissioner Scott Boyd said. "I would hope not."
