UPDATED: 1 Year Ago: Caylee Reported Missing
Casey Anthony Remains Jailed On Murder Charges
POSTED: Wednesday, July 15, 2009
UPDATED: 5:16 pm EDT July 15, 2009
<snipped>
On July 15, 2008, Cindy Anthony called 911 and reported her granddaughter Caylee Anthony missing. The following day, news broke that the toddler had been missing for a month before her mother, Casey Anthony, told anyone.

Before the 911 call was made, Casey Anthony picked up her former best friend Amy Huizenga from the airport. Earlier in the day, she cashed a forged $250 check from Huizenga's account, deputies said.

Also that day, Casey Anthony's father, George Anthony, paid $400 to retrieve the car she had abandoned weeks earlier. In an interview with investigators, George Anthony, a former police detective, said the car smelled like death.

"So I do know what it smells like. It's a smell you never, never get rid of," George Anthony said. "When I first went there to pick up that vehicle, I got within three feet of it, I could smell something. You look up and you say, 'Please don't let this be. Please don't let this be my Caylee.' That's what I thought. That's what my heart was saying."

Cindy Anthony found Huizenga's phone number in the car and Huizenga helped her track down Casey Anthony.

Huizenga told investigators the call from Cindy Anthony popped "a big old bubble." She said George and Cindy Anthony were afraid either Caylee or Casey Anthony was stuffed in the trunk of the car, "because they had not talked to either of them. Because of the smell."

After finding Casey Anthony at her boyfriend's apartment, Huizenga said Cindy Anthony demanded to see Caylee.

Caylee Anthony Remembered One Year Later
Cindy Anthony Called 911 One Year Ago
POSTED: 6:24 am EDT July 15, 2009
UPDATED: 5:36 pm EDT July 15, 2009
<snipped>
It was one year ago on July 15, 2008, when a frantic grandmother called 911 to report her 2-year-old granddaughter missing.

Thirty-one days after last seeing her granddaughter, Cindy Anthony called 911 dispatchers to report Caylee Anthony missing. In the call, Anthony made the infamous quote, "It smells like there was a dead body in the damn car."

The little girl's mother, Casey Anthony, told investigators a nanny by the name of Zenaida Gonzalez took her daughter. It is a story she stands by to this day.

Deputies arrested Casey Anthony, and she was let go twice before a grand jury handed up an indictment on first-degree murder charges. Casey Anthony has been jailed ever since, and on Dec. 11, 2008, Caylee's remains were found by Orange County meter reader Roy Kronk in some woods near the Anthony home in east Orange County.

Soon after the discovery, prosecutors announced they would seek the death penalty for Casey Anthony for the slaying of her daughter.

2nd Headline:
What's Next For Casey Anthony?
New evidence is expected to be released within the next couple weeks, but Casey Anthony's first-degree murder trial will still be many months away.

By the end of this month, a spokeswoman for the State Attorney's Office said she plans to release more audio and videotaped evidence in the case.

Anthony's death penalty attorney Andrea Lyon is promising to file a motion to have the death penalty part of the case against Anthony thrown out before trial.

Also in question is the jail video of Anthony's emotional reaction to the news of a child's remains being found near her home. In one of his latest rulings, Judge Stan Strickland said the media does have a right to argue for the tape's release. No date has been set for that hearing.

Casey Anthony case began one year ago today
Casey Anthony's daughter, Caylee Anthony, was reported missing one year ago today.
7:32 AM EDT, July 15, 2009
<snipped>
One year ago today police and the public were introduced to what would become one of the most strange and bizarre cases to rock Central Florida in years -- it's the day Caylee Marie Anthony was finally reported missing.

Five months later, the skeletal remains of missing Caylee Anthony were found in a wooded lot less than a mile from the Anthony family home by an Orange County employee. The medical examiner determined the child had been murdered.

The first-degree murder trial is slated to begin next January, however a check fraud case (Casey Anthony is also accused of stealing money from her friend) may start before then.

Meanwhile, Casey Anthony sits alone in an Orange County Jail cell with no visitors and no phone calls. People from around the country keep a balance in her commissary account and the snacks, candy bars and junk food stocked in her cell.

The case is far from over.

Casey Anthony Case, One Year Later

July 15, 2008 was also the day that Casey Anthony told investigators that a nanny by the name of Zenaida Gonzalez took her daughter.

It's a claim she is still making today.

From there a massive search for the toddler began that ultimately ended last December when an Orange County meter reader found Caylee's remains not far from the Anthony's home.

Casey is now charged with Caylee's murder and the prosecution is seeking the death penalty.

Her trial was supposed to begin in October, but that has been delayed until next year.

She's has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

UPDATED: Death Of Caylee Anthony Still Captivates Year Later

The story of Casey Anthony and her little girl has become a soap opera of sorts over the last year, with plot twists and turns, and a colorful cast of supporting characters.

At the center of it all is the petite 23-year-old mother charged with killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. It's been one year since the toddler was reported missing, and while her body was found six months ago, authorities still don't know exactly how she died.

As much as Casey Anthony's story has transfixed viewers, Lezlie Laws, a professor of nonfiction writing at Rollins College in suburban Orlando, worries that the discourse about the case hasn't been constructive.

"What is it about us as a society that would cultivate a human being that would be capable of doing that? What are we doing wrong? Where do we need to put our time, attention, money and social services?" she said.

"I don't see that being raised," Laws said. "Instead, it's just a sensational, spilled guts on the concrete, kind of 'Look at this, isn't this gross?' story."

Casey Anthony: 'Today' marks first anniversary of Cindy's 911 call
posted by halboedeker on Jul 15, 2009 9:07:21 AM
<snipped>
"Today" threw a wedding this morning, but first the NBC program took note of a sad anniversary: Cindy Anthony called 911 a year ago today.

NBC's Kerry Sanders noted that "what makes the case so curious" is that Caylee had disappeared a full month before Casey alerted anyone. Sanders took note of the heavy media coverage and explored the case's costs.

Orlando attorney Cheney Mason estimated the cost to prosecution will be $1.5 million. With a change of venue, the cost could jump to $2 million, Mason said.

Sanders quoted experts who put defense costs at $2 million. Sanders asked how the unemployed Casey afford that defense, then added that she might file for indigent status.

If the state takes over, the court will tell Casey's defense team to significantly reduce costs, NBC's Dan Abrams predicted. The prosecution's case rests on how persuasive the circumstantial evidence is, Abrams said. Abrahams added that it's clear both sides want "a little extra time" before the case goes to trial.

You can expect many more reports today about the anniversary of Cindy's call.

Frantic 911 call launched year-long Caylee drama
July 15, 2009
<snipped>
The child's grandmother was frantic, talking a mile a minute. But her mother seemed unemotional, disconnected from the drama around her.

So began the Caylee Anthony case, a mystery that became a nightly fixture on cable television and captivated true-crime buffs across the country.

Her attorney, Jose Baez, has said that once all the facts are known, it will become clear that his client is innocent.

While reports of missing children are not unusual -- a Haleigh and a Haylee are two recent examples -- several elements came together in the Caylee case to make it a high-profile news story, said Robert Thompson, who heads the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University.

"The fact that it's a toddler had that really dramatic, 'this is our worst nightmare' thing. It doesn't get any more dramatic than that," he said. "Then, of course, there's Casey herself."

But Thompson, the pop culture professor at Syracuse, cautions that the final curtain hasn't fallen on this drama.

"It isn't necessarily a slam dunk," he said. "We have the JonBenet Ramsey case to show that we may think one thing, and it isn't so." Early in that investigation, authorities said John and Patsy Ramsey were "under an umbrella of suspicion" in their daughter's death, but they later were cleared.

"These things are capable of twisting around," Thompson said. "But that's another element that makes them interesting."

Casey was taken into custody on July 16, charged with child neglect, making false statements and obstructing an investigation. Her bond was set at $500,200. She was bonded out by a California bounty hunter on August 21.

On Friday, August 28, she was re-arrested for uttering a forged instrument, fraudulent use of personal information and petit theft. The bounty hunter that first posted her bond rescinded his offer, making it virtually impossible for her to be released on a $503,200 bond with her additional $3,000 bond on new charges.

She was arrested for a third time Monday, September 15 on new check fraud and theft charges. Casey was released shortly after on a $1,250 bond and was again escorted out of jail by her attorney and two bodyguards.
Anthony was arrested Tuesday October 14, 2008 on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter and four counts of lying to investigators about the disappearance of her daughter.

On Wednesday October 15, 2008 Casey Anthony made her initial court appearance on charges that she murdered her missing 3-year-old daughter, Caylee. Anthony went before Judge John Jordan, who read the charges against her. Dressed in a blue jail jumpsuit, Anthony made no comment during Wednesday's 90-second hearing.

Casey Anthony: Stations recap strange case on first anniversary
posted by halboedeker on Jul 15, 2009 12:48:42 PM
<snipped>
Central Florida stations today marked the first anniversary of the Casey Anthony case. It's a story that has kept many viewers watching -- and annoyed many others -- during a tumultuous time in television news.

"One year ago, the start of the case that made headlines around the world," WESH-Channel 2 anchor Scott Walker said at noon. "The case against Casey began on July 15 with a 911 call."

That call, of course, was came from Cindy Anthony, Casey's mother.

WKMG-Channel 6 anchor Erick Weber said that the station would have a report at 6 p.m. It will come from Tony Pipitone -- "the very best investigative reporter around," Weber said. That tease went straight into another to an "Inside Edition" report about "the book that predicted Michael Jackson's death, the bombshells everyone's talking about."

News organizations keep turning to the Anthonys because they, like Jackson, are just so confounding.

1 Year Ago, Caylee Case Went Public
Search For Toddler Began 1 Year Ago Thursday
POSTED: Wednesday, July 15, 2009
UPDATED: 3:52 pm EDT July 16, 2009
<snipped>
At 4:11 a.m. on July 16, 2009, Detective Yuri Melich with the Orange County Sheriff's Department recorded a conversation with Casey Anthony, which took place in her parents' east Orange County home.

Melich suggested to Casey Anthony that she admit she was lying about leaving Caylee with a baby sitter name Zenaida Gonzalez, a woman who has never been found.

"If you're basically, if you're trying to fabricate a story to kind of make something look a little bit better, now is your time to tell me. Are you telling me that this is a story you want to stick with?" Melich asked Casey Anthony.

"That's the truth. It's the story I'm going to stick with. Yes," Casey Anthony said.

Later that morning, Casey Anthony led Melich to places she claimed the baby sitter had ties to. She then led him to Universal Studios, where she claimed to have a job, but then once inside the building she told him she left the job in 2005.

At 1:20 p.m., Casey Anthony participated in another recorded conversation, this time with Sgt. John Allen.

"We got all the way into the building, into the hallway out here before you finally say, "Well, I really don't have an office here.' But we were walking to your office, right?" Allen said.

Casey Anthony said yes, and when asked if it made sense to her, she told Allen, "I understand how all that sounds."

Based on the expert testimony the state attorney has assembled, prosecutors are prepared to argue that Caylee's body was already rotting in a swamp a few blocks from the Anthony family's home and that Casey Anthony dumped the body there after putting it in the trunk of her car.

Casey Anthony Case -- One Year Later
Thursday, July 16, 2009 8:36:47 AM
<snipped>
The 911 call may end up being a key piece of evidence for prosecutors.

They will likely have to fight to get forensic air samples from the trunk of Casey's car admitted into evidence.

Casey was arrested roughly 24 hours after the 911 call.

Thursday will mark one year since we all first saw video of Casey being arrested, and heard Caylee's name and saw her face for the first time.

A year later, there is a court file in the homicide case against Casey. She's also facing criminal charges of check fraud and a civil defamation case.

Casey's all-star defense team faces the most immediate task of trying to delay the check fraud case until after the criminal case.

The defense has yet to reveal why they believe Casey is innocent.

One on one with Jose Baez
Updated: Thursday, 16 Jul 2009, 6:16 PM EDT
Published : Thursday, 16 Jul 2009, 6:10 PM EDT
<snipped>
Jose Baez agreed to sit down with FOX 35 reporter Holly Bristow and answer a firestorm of questions but he wouldn't get down to the nitty gritty of the case.

On the low side

Jose Baez: “One would think a high profile case would give the public the opportunity to learn about the system, our public justice system and the law. Unfortunately I've learned that it’s more about entertainment than what actually transpires in the criminal justice system.

More than 6,000 pages of documents and hours of DVD's have been released during the discovery process. They've revealed everything from jail house interviews between Casey and police to scandalous pictures of Casey dirty dancing while her daughter was missing.

Holly Bristow: Has it changed your opinion of Florida's public records laws?

“I'll be honest with you, I've never gave much thought to public records laws. While I've utilized them to gain information on many of my cases I have never realized the double edged sword and the harm it could do to our system. I think what's important with the Casey Anthony case everyone realized no matter how you feel about the case or its participants you should always remember that what happens in her case, specifically because it’s a high profile case, affects us all.”

Right now there is no official trial date set for the murder case against Casey Anthony. Baez says that by this time next year the trial should be over.

UPDATED: Baez Wants To Ban Bounty Hunter From Testifying
Attorney Says Leonard Padilla's Statements Privileged
POSTED: 5:22 pm EDT July 16, 2009
UPDATED: 3:07 pm EDT July 17, 2009
<snipped>
Attorney Jose Baez has filed a motion for a protective order that includes privacy agreements Padilla and his employees signed last August, which was when nephew Tony Padilla bailed Anthony out of jail. Baez argues that Padilla and his employees were working for him at the time so their statements made to the police about what they heard from Anthony are privileged and should not be released to the public. He also says that attorney-client privilege should ban Padilla and his employees from being witnesses for the state.

One criminal defense attorney WESH 2 News spoke with said lawyers and bail bondsmen cannot enter in to confidentiality agreements and he does not think Baez' strategy to keep these statements out of court will work.

While she was out of jail and Caylee was still missing, Anthony allegedly blurted out, "They haven't even found the clothes she was wearing." In November, Padilla confirmed the statement.

What else Anthony may have told McLaughlin and other employees remains a mystery.

McLaughlin to this point has maintained a very low profile and turned multiple down interview requests.

Baez filed the motion now because the statements from Padilla and his employees were due to be part of an evidence release from the state attorney's office later this month.

Late Thursday afternoon, the defense in the case against Casey Anthony filed motions to delay Casey's check fraud trial and to keep Leonard Padilla from talking about their conversations while he was involved in Casey's case.

The defense also received 800 pages of documents, much of which focused on Casey's ex-fiancé, Jesse Grund.

The documents included Grund's personnel file from the Orlando Police Department and lab reports on evidence from Casey's car.

Anthony's Defense Files New Motion
Defense Seeks To Block Testimony From Bounty Hunter
POSTED: Thursday, July 16, 2009
UPDATED: 5:59 pm EDT July 16, 2009

Anthony's defense attorneys filed the motion Thursday afternoon. They said Padilla and his partners had a privacy agreement with the defense, so anything they learned would be considered privileged information.

The defense is also seeking access to documents created by Texas Equusearch and its founder Tim Miller. The search group assisted in searches for Anthony's missing daughter, Caylee Anthony.

The documents the defense is seeking are in Texas and are not subject to Florida circuit court subpoenas, but the defense is seeking to have Miller certified as a material witness. The defense hopes to add more weight to the their argument that Miller and the records he maintains identifying those who searched for Caylee's body should be produced.

UPDATED: Defense Wants Padilla's Casey Conversations Thrown Out
Thursday, July 16, 2009 9:48:04 PM
<snipped>
Several new motions were filed by the defense that they hope will give Casey Anthony an advantage when the case eventually goes to trial.

One hundred and ten pages of motions were filed by Casey’s attorneys late Thursday afternoon.

The motions cover three main areas.

*The defense wants to delay the criminal check fraud trial\

*They want documents from Tim Miller and Texas EquuSearch

*Jose Baez and team wants bounty hunter Leonard Padilla and his associates to not be able to talk about their conversations with Casey Anthony.

The defense team also wants videos, photos, maps and charts. It’s everything that Texas EquuSearch has relating to their search for Caylee Anthony.

The judge denied a similar motion in late January.

But in the new motion, the defense is able to offer much more background and what they see as relevant information to try and get the judge to approve their request.

Defense sources said Casey never made any incriminating statements to Padilla or his people.

But the defense doesn't want them on the witness stand or have any of their interviews released to the media.

Attorneys Jose Baez and Andrea Lyon argued that they're too busy preparing for Anthony's first-degree murder case to handle a fraud trial. Anthony faces the death penalty in the death of her daughter, Caylee Marie Anthony. Trial is delayed until next year at the earliest.

In a separate motion, Anthony's defense asked that testimony from bounty hunter Leonard Padilla be barred from her murder case. Padilla bonded Anthony out of jail and signed a privacy agreement with Baez preventing him from taping Anthony's statements. The agreement also emphasizes Padilla does not represent Baez's law firm, according to court documents.

In another motion, defense attorneys asked Tim Miller, head of search group Texas Equusearch, be certified as a material witness in the murder case. Miller's group helped search for Caylee Marie Anthony. The defense motion argues Miller has crucial information on how efforts were conducted.
