Casey Anthony: In a movie, the big scenes would be Cindy’s
posted by halboedeker on July, 12 2010 8:10 AM

A savvy producer could use the public record and tell a riveting story. No money would ever need to go to any of the Anthonys.

The challenge would be telling the story, because in a Casey Anthony movie, the central character is a cipher. The mostly mum Casey is charged with first-degree murder in the death of daughter Caylee.

The better way to go would be to focus on Cindy Anthony, Casey’s mom, who has delivered the most dramatic moments in this headline-making case. It’s a role that would appeal to actresses of a certain age. Done the right way, the role could have Emmy written all over it. (A colleague suggests Edie Falco would be perfect after all those years on “The Sopranos.”)

Anthony Evidence Inspection To Begin This Week
POSTED: Monday, July 12, 2010
UPDATED: 12:03 pm EDT July 12, 2010
<snipped>
Last week, Anthony's defense team and the state attorney submitted a list of the pieces of evidence they want to inspect this week.

The list has not yet been made public because Judge Belvin Perry was out of the office. He returned on Monday and may release the inspection request soon.

Anthony's defense attorney said most the items on his list were collected in the woods near where Caylee Anthony's body was found.

Deadline Set In Casey Case For Release Of List

Updated: 12:27 pm EDT July 12, 2010
<snipped>
If attorneys in the case against Casey Anthony want to block a list of evidence from being released to the public, they must submit a new motion by 4:00pm Tuesday.

Last week, Casey's attorneys met the judge's deadline to turn over the list. The list is public record, but the defense did not file it with the clerk. Instead, it was sent it directly to the judge, who was on vacation.

Now, if either party wants to keep it private they must file a request by July 13 at 4:00pm; if a motion isn't filed, it will be released.

CASEY EXPECTED IN COURT THURSDAY
WFTV will be there when Casey Anthony's mother and brother testify at a hearing later this week. The two were subpoenaed to discuss the panicked 911 call Cindy Anthony made where she claimed Casey's car smelled like a dead body.

That call launched the murder investigation against Casey.The hearing is scheduled for Thursday afternoon. WFTV.com will stream it live online.

Experts In Anthony Case View Evidence
POSTED: Tuesday, July 13, 2010
UPDATED: 7:21 pm EDT July 13, 2010
<snipped>
The experts, including defense witness Dr. Henry Lee, who worked in the O.J. Simpson murder case, gathered at the Orange County Sheriff's Office to review about 100 items, most of which were collected in the woods near the spot where Caylee's remains were discovered in December 2008. "Once the evidence is examined, it's not longer diverging evidence," Lee said.

Two other forensic scientists, Richard and Selma Eikelenboom, who have traveled to Orlando from the Netherlands, specialize in "touch DNA," which is DNA left behind by a killer on something they handled with their fingers.

A fourth defense expert arrived at the Sheriff's Office Tuesday afternoon. Dr. Tim Huntington is a world-renowned entomologist. Prosecutor Linda Drane-Burdick plans to use her own insect experts to prove a body had been decomposing in Anthony's car.

Anthony's defense team, led by attorney Jose Baez, is also trying to keep the 911 call placed by Anthony's mother, Cindy Anthony, out of court. The call, in which Cindy Anthony said it smelled like a body was inside her daughter's car, was made two years ago this week. Cindy Anthony is expected to testify about the call this week.

Anthony Defense Evidence Review Under Way
Casey's Car, Duct Tape Amid Items Examined

POSTED: 11:54 am EDT July 12, 2010

The defense team are reviewing items of physical evidence including hairs collected from Casey's car and the duct tape found on her daughter Caylee's skull.

The car, the trunk, the duct tape, the items found with Caylee's remains which could tie them to her grandparents home. All are expected to be reviewed by Anthony's defense experts at the sheriff's office on Tuesday and Wednesday.

So far, the list of items submitted by the defense to Judge Belvin Perry has not been released. "They want to know what evidence is relevent and which evidence is not going to be relevant," criminal defense attorney Tom Luka said.

Luka has been representing Casey's brother, Lee Anthony. According to Luka, these inspections give Casey's defense experts a chance to see much of the evidence for the first time and make sure there are no surprises. "Basically the defense is saying you have to show us all the evidence nine months prior to the trial, so we can properly prepare the case," Luka said. Because this case is so circumstantial, observers say it could come down to a battle of experts. So what these experts see and observe about the physical evidence is crucial.

Casey Anthony: Defense wants evidence to stay private
Last Updated: Tuesday, July 13, 2010 1:08 PM

Cheney Mason, Casey Anthony’s death-qualified attorney, was the first to arrive at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, ready to inspect nearly 100 pieces of evidence.

He was soon followed by attorney Jose Baez, DNA experts Selma and Richard Eikelenboom, and renowned forensic scientist Dr. Henry Lee.

Assistant state attorneys Jeff Ashton and Linda Drane Burdick were also expected to take part in the review, which is being recorded on video.

The Eikelenbooms traveled to Orlando from the Netherlands for the case.

“We’re here just to get insight, just to look at some evidence,” Selma Eikelenboom said.

The defense has said it will concentrate on evidence collected from where the remains of Casey’s 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, were found.

Details on what that evidence is, however, were not immediately released.

Casey Anthony defense team objects to release of evidence details
12:10 p.m. EDT, July 13, 2010
<snipped>
Casey Anthony's defense team has filed a motion in court today opposing the release of documents that would reveal what evidence the team and its experts are currently reviewing.

The objection, filed today, states Casey Anthony and her attorneys "object to any preliminary release to the news media, or other public, of the records relating to intended inspection of tangible evidence."

Today and tomorrow, Casey Anthony's defense team and a series of high-profile experts are reviewing evidence collected in the murder case and held by the Orange County Sheriff's Office. Anthony's attorneys, Jose Baez and Cheney Mason, left the Sheriff's Office around noon after spending several hours with experts there reviewing evidence.

Baez declined to talk about what type of evidence the team has reviewed so far. He did say that they plan to take another look at Casey Anthony's Pontiac Sunfire. The two lawyers left separately. Baez may be going to pick up another expert. Experts Henry Lee, and Selma and Richard Eikelenboom did not leave the building.

In their objection to the release of documents that would reveal what evidence the team and its experts are examining, the attorneys wrote: "This is a case of the state of Florida versus Casey Anthony, this is not a case of news media and John Q. Public."

"To allow the news media to continue to have what has turned out to be, in many instances, 'first look' at evidence, publicize otherwise uninformed speculation and conclusions about evidence, utilizing 'talking head' lawyers who have neither the experience, knowledge, or predicates for their public comments, promises to continue to infuse this case with public bias, prejudice, misunderstanding, and error," the objection says.

Kealing added: “So far no word from Judge Belvin Perry’s office on a ruling.”

WFTV-Ch. 9 looked at the “dream team of experts,” but anchor Vanessa Echols added, “It may be a long before we know anything about the evidence being inspected.”

Casey Defense Team Reviewing 100 Items
Defense Attorney Says Inspection Will Take All Day

Attorney Cheney Mason said he and the rest of the defense team will be reviewing close to 100 items of evidence. Mason said they will only be taking a look at the evidence – not testing or analyzing it. He said many of the items come from the scene where Caylee’s remains were found. He acknowledged that he filed an objection to Judge Belvin Perry in regards to his releasing a list of evidence the defense team plans to inspect.

Inside the sheriff’s headquarters, Jose Baez shook hands with Yuri Melich, the investigator who has been on the case since the beginning.

Henry Lee, the defense forensic evidence expert, deflected prosecutors concerns that he misplaced a key piece of evidence in the recent Phil Spector case. “Well, I was just in Washington, D.C., testifying and no one said, nobody mentioned that,” said Lee.

Also in attendance this morning was Richard Eiklenbloom, a Dutch trace evidence expert; his wife, Thelma, a Dutch coroner and defense evidence expert; and Jeff Ashton, a prosecutor.

Anthony's experts examine the evidence
Last Updated: Tuesday, July 13, 2010 6:21 PM

Experts from all over the world are here in Orlando to review evidence collected in the case. "This is a case of the state of Florida versus Casey Anthony, this is not a case of news media and John Q. Public," said Anthony’s defense.

That's why Casey Anthony’s defense doesn't want the public to know exactly what evidence Anthony’s so-called ‘dream team of experts’ are looking at Tuesday. They filed an official objection to the release of the list. "Well we're here just to get insight just to look at some evidence," said DNA expert Selma Eikelenboom. Joining late Tuesday afternoon is forensic entomologist, or insect expert, Dr. Timothy Huntington.

The team of experts, including Dr Henry Lee who has worked on the O.J. Simpson and Phil Spector cases, are expected to look at nearly 100 pieces of evidence. The defense had earlier said it will center around evidence collected near the area Caylee Anthony’s remains were found. The state, as well as forensic and crime scene investigators with the sheriff’s office, are also watching the experts.

“It’s been placed in 3 individual bays where they can conduct that examination without any contamination,” said Orange County Sheriff's office Capt. Angelo Neives.

Casey's Lawyers Begin Evidence Examination
Posted: 11:51 am EDT July 13, 2010
Updated: 6:20 pm EDT July 13, 2010

Casey Anthony’s lawyers started a two-day evidence examination Tuesday. They brought in their own experts from as far away as the Netherlands to review stacks of evidence in the case.

Casey's attorneys are fighting to keep the list of evidence private. They turned over the list last week laying out what evidence they planned to inspect and a famous crime expert looked over some of it Tuesday.

Both members of the defense and prosecutors were at the Orange County sheriff’s headquarters Tuesday. The defense team is trying to keep the specific evidence they're looking at, which prosecutors already know about, secret from the public. Meanwhile, the sheriff's office is videotaping the evidence examination so there can be no question as to what happened there.

Evidence from the three possible crime scenes is being examined in separate bays at the Orange County Sheriff's Office: the car, the house, and the woods where Caylee Anthony’s remains were found.

The defense filed a motion Tuesday slamming the media in its effort to keep the items of evidence it's examining this week sealed from the public. One of the arguments it makes is that the media will not get to see the defense inspection of the evidence, but that's not really true; it's being videotaped by the sheriff's office and the judge said WFTV will get a copy of the videotape.

Casey Anthony: WFTV defends Kathi Belich’s style

Mason, an attorney for Casey Anthony, ripped the persistent Belich by saying, “I’m worried about you always bothering me.” He called her questions “too stupid.” Mason said he’d have to talk to Belich’s boss if she didn’t back up and leave him alone. And that’s not all. Mason called her boss “stupid.” When Belich said she had obviously struck a nerve, Mason replied, “You are a nerve.”

So what does Belich’s boss have to say? “I don’t know what all the hubbub is about,” WFTV news director Bob Jordan said. “Kathi was polite. Her questions were relevant and on point. His demeanor speaks for itself — as does Kathi’s.”

Day two of evidence review in the case against Casey Anthony begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday. In a rare moment Tuesday, the lawyer trying to spare Anthony's life, Jose Baez, shook hands with the detective who has been leading the charge for capital punishment, Yuri Melich.

Cheney Mason, an attorney for the Anthony defense team, said Tuesday that he expects to review around 100 items of evidence. “We'll all be together looking at it, so it's all going to be done controlled and orderly,” Mason said.

The team of experts includes a husband and wife from Holland who specialize in trace evidence. Tuesday afternoon, the team’s entomologist arrived. Dr. Tim Huntington has testified about maggots and microscopic insects in more than 50 death cases.

Sheriff's officials said they have set up evidence in three locations. They're following the judge's instructions to videotape what goes on and most of all, preserve the evidence.

Casey's Latest Jail Purchases: Crackers & Cocoa
Jail Account Records Show Numerous Deposits From Parents

Casey Anthony’s latest jailhouse purchases include cocoa butter, hot cocoa, and saltine crackers, newly released records from the Orange County Corrections Department show.

On a June 11 order from the jail’s commissary, Anthony’s bill was $65.04, according to documents. The order contains hygiene items like shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and cocoa butter as well as six ponytail holders and various food and drink items. Anthony purchased 10 bottles of water and hot cocoa packets, a package of Starlite mints, peanut butter, and three packages of saltine crackers.

As of October of 2009, Anthony had spent more than $2,200 in the jail’s commissary. In past orders, Anthony has purchased hot peanuts, hot and spicy corn chips and chili with beans.

Orange County Corrections records show George Anthony, Casey’s father, deposited money into her jail account as recently as last month. He made two separate deposits in the amounts of $50 on June 3, and $100 on June 5. In recent weeks, George Anthony has stopped attending his daughter's court hearings. Cindy Anthony deposited $115 into the account on May 11, according to the documents. As of July 13, Anthony’s jail account had a balance of $5.

UPDATED: Casey Anthony: Judge rules state can use 911 calls during trial
The 911 calls from Casey Anthony's mother, Cindy Anthony, were the topic of a more than three-hour hearing now under way before Chief Circuit Judge Belvin Perry.

5:23 p.m. EDT, July 15, 2010
<snipped>
For the first time in more than a year, the entire Anthony family is in court for a hearing in the first-degree murder case against Casey Anthony. Lawyers are battling over the 911 calls Casey Anthony's mother made in July 2008 reporting her granddaughter, Caylee Marie Anthony, missing. Casey Anthony is joined by defense attorneys Cheney Mason and Jose Baez. Also in court are parents George Anthony and Cindy Anthony, who testified, and brother Lee Anthony, who is testifying. The defense team filed a last-minute memo Wednesday arguing against using Cindy Anthony's 911 calls at trial.

Cindy Anthony testifies
Baez called Cindy Anthony to testify this afternoon. She described picking up Casey Anthony's car from the impound in July 2008, and George Anthony telling her it smelled like something died, or the car had a dead body inside. Anthony said it was her husband, George Anthony, who told her it was his initial thought that a dead body had been in the car. Cindy Anthony said she had no experience in smelling decomposing bodies in vehicles.

Assistant State Attorney Linda Drane Burdick then questioned Anthony, a nurse, about previous statements she made to law-enforcement about smelling rotting flesh and having been to a morgue. Drane Burdick asked Anthony if she connected the dead body smell with the discovery that Caylee was missing for 31 days. "If that's what connected in my mind, yes … I said what I said. I can't analyze it," Anthony said. When questioned a second time by Baez, Anthony also said she still thinks Caylee is alive.

Lee Anthony testifies
Just before 4 p.m., nearly two hours after the hearing began, Lee Anthony was called by Drane Burdick to testify. Lee Anthony also was questioned about what happened the day they realized Caylee was missing, and what the interaction was like with his sister.

Judge addresses defense issues with Texas EquuSearch
After a lengthy sidebar at the beginning of today's hearing, Chief Judge Belvin Perry resolved the EquuSearch deal. Casey Anthony's defense team will get to review the documents again, and a special magistrate will be appointed to supervise. Everything will be spelled out in a subsequent order.

Casey Anthony: How did defense examination of evidence go?
posted by halboedeker on July, 13 2010 5:56 PM
<snipped>
The public couldn’t see the most important part of the latest episode in the Casey Anthony saga, but it sounded like a medical story. If the public felt deprived, drama materialized elsewhere when a defense attorney ripped a reporter. Defense experts had to “gown and glove up like surgeons before an operation,” WESH-Ch. 2’s Bob Kealing reported tonight. “These two sides — Casey’s defense and the sheriff’s department — not a lot of love lost there, but today, despite that, we’re told things are going smoothly.”

WKMG-Ch. 6’s Mike DeForest reported that defense attorneys Jose Baez and Cheney Mason gave a big thumbs-up when departing this afternoon.

At a hearing Thursday, Judge Belvin Perry will take up the defense’s motion, filed this morning, to keep the defense team’s list of evidence that was examined from being released to the public. That hearing will explore whether Cindy Anthony’s 911 calls will be admitted at trial. Cindy Anthony, Casey’s mother, and Lee Anthony, Casey’s brother, will testify at the hearing.

WFTV’s Kathi Belich reported that evidence “from three possible crime scenes is being examined by the defense in separate bays at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.” She listed those scenes: the car, the house and the woods. Belich said that defense attorney Mason “bristled and blustered” when she asked about controversial defense expert Dr. Henry Lee. “I don’t intend to answer your questions — they’re always too stupid,” Mason snapped at Belich.

Casey's Defense Wants More Testing On Evidence
Posted: 8:30 am EDT July 14, 2010
Updated: 6:29 pm EDT July 14, 2010
<snipped>
Lawyers in the case against Casey Anthony wrapped up their examination of evidence Wednesday evening, but they say they're not done with it yet. Lawyers told WFTV they found things in the evidence that the FBI missed. Casey’s lawyers want a new round of testing at taxpayer expense. Defense attorney Jose Baez claims his experts have made some discoveries over the last two days and he will to ask Chief Judge Belvin Perry to allow defense testing of the items in question.

Defense testing of evidence is not unusual, but in this case, the taxpayers would pay for it. “I'll answer your questions. Let them go in and check in,” defense attorney Jose Baez said. Baez ran interference Wednesday for other members of his team after WFTV asked them some tough questions a day earlier about defense expert Dr. Henry Lee; a California judge criticized Lee for mishandling key prosecution evidence in the Phil Spector murder case, which resulted in evidence disappearing.

Jose Baez told WFTV he and his team saw some things in their first-hand examination of the evidence that will probably lead them to request doing some testing of their own. “How many tests would you say that you are going to ask for based on what you've seen so far?” WFTV reporter Kathi Belich asked Baez. “I don't know. I'm not the experts. They tell me what they think, we take it from there and I make the decisions,” he replied.

WFTV ruffled feathers again on Wednesday when they asked whether Baez will ask taxpayers to pay the travel expenses for the defense experts who've come here from the Netherlands. “Are you going to ask taxpayers to pay for their transportation?” Belich asked. “You and your taxpayer nonsense,” Jose Baez replied. Eventually, Baez said he won't ask taxpayers to pay for their travel from the Netherlands.

Thursday, Casey’s defense team will try to convince the judge to seal the list of items it's been looking at it. They do not want WFTV to know exactly what they're looking at, even though the sheriff's office is videotaping and that tape will eventually be released.
