The program's unusual approach is "shameful," said Al Tompkins, an instructor at the Poynter Institute, a school for journalists. "We have a system in the United States that works pretty well. It's a system of discovery, of hearings, of cross examinations, and it's worked pretty darn well for a long time. We have no business trying this case."

Local 6 Obtains New Casey Anthony Party Photo
Picture Shows Mom Partying Weeks After Daughter, Caylee, Disappeared

The photo was taken on July 4, 2008, as Casey Anthony and friends walked to a fireworks celebration. It shows her with a plastic beer cup held to her lips as she smiles.
Now, with the photo taken by Will Waters on July 4 and provided this week to Local 6, the state has obtained a piece of evidence that fills in part of that gap.
Waters said he revealed during his deposition earlier this month that he had taken photos of Anthony, but he was only able to retrieve one from his computers. He said he turned it over to Detective Yuri Melich on Monday.

Defense Says Impartial Jury Cannot Be Found In Orange County

In a response to Perry filed today, Anthony's attorneys say it would be impossible to seat an impartial jury from among orange county residents.


"The community has shown extreme hostility toward the defendant, " they wrote.


The filing notes Perry already granted a change of venue in May 2010, finding then "it is likely that a fair and impartial jury cannot be impaneled " here.


Since then, the attorneys say, "local media coverage has only intensified."

Friday, Judge Perry said “There’s going to be some press in that area, not as much as you see here because of certain limitations.
But there will be press, not in that area, but they’re going to be press generally throughout. Very similar to what’s here. And if you look at the venues, one of the things it says, you can try to see if you can get a jury someplace," Perry said.

Perry also said the hotels come cheap at this secret location.

Earlier this week, prosecutors filed more paperwork saying the defense has already dropped one of its two new experts, but wants the other to testify about something Casey says happened to her years before Caylee's murder that prosecutors say might be inadmissible.

However, at Friday's hearing, the defense announced they would not be using either of the mental health experts, so the issue immediately became moot. Prosecutors had argued Casey Anthony is a murderer and a liar, but not mentally ill.

The defense team lost in a key ruling involving a heart-shaped sticker and a tattoo. The judge ruled both will be fair game in the trial.

Florida judge rebuffs bid to bar cameras at Casey Anthony's trial

(CNN) -- A lawyer for Casey Anthony, pushed Friday to prohibit cameras at his client's upcoming trial -- a motion that the presiding judge said he would have to consider, but was not likely to support.

"We don't live in Egypt. We don't live in Libya," Judge Perry Jr. said about the idea of restricting news coverage. "There's a thing called the First Amendment. Whether we like it or not, it's in the Constitution."Casey Anthony, faces a capital murder charge in the death of her 2 yrs old daughter, Caylee, plus six other charges including aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child and misleading law enforcement.

Residue from what appeared to be a heart-shaped sticker was found on duct tape stretched across Caylee Marie Anthony's mouth, investigators have said.

The defense also objected to photographs of Caylee and Anthony taken at a former boyfriend's house. The state wants to use those pictures because they show the toddler wearing a shirt found where her remains were located.

Perry denied all but one the defense team's photo objections: Prosecutors will not be allowed to show a picture of a smiling Anthony, taken in July 2008 when Orange County sheriff's detectives questioned her about Caylee's disappearance.

Perry's ruling on the other photos means they could be used at trial but it does not mean jurors will see them. When the trial starts, the state still must go through the normal process of admitting evidence.

Perry predicted that the news media would quickly get such a decision reversed — he mentioned a 48-hour reversal.

Tattoo, Sticker In For Casey Trial, Mental Health Experts Out

The defense was shut down in an attempt to have its mental health experts tell Casey's story for her about why she kept Caylee's disappearance a secret for 31 days. All because, if they went through with it, the state would be able to have its experts examine Casey.


Prosecutors say Casey Anthony is a murderer and a liar, but she is not mentally ill.

Once it became clear Casey would have to undergo a state examination, the defense gave up on the whole idea.


The defense team lost in a key ruling involving a heart-shaped sticker and a tattoo. The judge ruled both will be fair game in the trial.

Prosecutors say the tiny, heart-shaped sticker was found on duct tape that covered Caylee's mouth.
The defense does not want the jury to hear about the heart sticker investigators found with Caylee's remains that matched up to residue that was later destroyed by fingerprint testing done on the duct tape over Caylee's face. Investigators found similar stickers at the Anthony home.

Baez filed new paperwork Friday objecting to the idea of an Orange County jury, if one can't be seated in another jurisdiction.

Perry insisted that he is willing to stay in the secret location to select a jury, if things are moving along.

"If we're making progress, we won't stop," he said.

Perry said that only one person from each side will know the location of jury selection early on, up until one hour before jury selection begins on May 9.

Prosecutor Ashton said he wanted his family to know where he was going.

Judge Perry said, "If you can't abide by that I suggest you see (District Attorney Lawson Lamar) to see if he can replace you."



There Were Photo Setbacks For Defense, Anthony's Bella Vita tattoo and heart-shaped sticker evidence will be allowed at the trial

Ashton said of the 400 to 500 photos from Caylee's autopsy, his team selected only a few which show specific things.
Judge Perry did exclude one photo of Casey Anthony smiling, but said that if her happiness is a matter of testimony at the trial, the photo could be used.

"She's been portrayed as an evil person," added Cindy Anthony.

"It's very unfair of the media to go and harass people and that's...exactly what the media has done," said Cindy.

Confronted by a constant barrage of questions from reporters outside her home, Cindy finally lashed out:

"I've asked you guys to respect my privacy," she yells. "All of you leeches, all of you parasites, all of you maggots out here. OK? That's true. Because that's exactly what you guys are. All of you guys."


"There's no proof that Casey had anything to do with it," added Cindy.

It's an opinion strongly shared by Baez and Mason have given "48 Hours" an inside look at the defense as they prepare for her upcoming trial.

"It's an unprovable case because it's not true," says Jose Baez.


"This is not a death penalty case, in my opinion. And I've been trying murder cases for 40 years," Cheney Mason says. "There is no...evidence linking her with the death of this child. Period."


Baez's concern is finding jurors who he feels haven't been swayed by the constant reports of seemingly solid evidence against Casey Anthony - media coverage that has been going nonstop for nearly three years.

ORLANDO --Judge Perry could decide at any moment what scientific evidence will be allowed at Casey Anthony's upcoming trial.

But one important piece of evidence that has not come up at all during recent hearings were Google searches on "neck breaking," and "how to make chloroform".


On the laptop was a cartoon drawing of a little girl starting at a teddy bear hanging from a noose, with the caption:

Why do people kill people, who kill people, to show people that to kill people is bad?
The image was in a folder on the desktop of Casey's computer, and was last saved on July 8, 2008 -- one week before her daughter, Caylee, was reported missing.


Cawn said she also found the term "chloroform," but not on Casey's laptop. That came later, when investigators seized the Anthony family's home computer, to which everyone in the house had access.

But Cawn and her supervisor, Sgt. Kevin Stenger, could not see anything besides that word, chloroform, and they needed help to find out more.

At a computer conference in Orlando in 2009, Stenger met John Dennis Bradley, a Canadian computer expert.

Bradley worked for three days, for free, to try and extract the information from the Anthonys' computer.
He finally cracked it at 3 a.m. on the Friday he was set to fly home.

"I found two results," Bradley told lawyers in his deposition. "One was for 'chloroform,' spelled 'c-h-l-o-r-o-f-o-r-m,' and that was dated March 17, 2008, at 14:43 p.m., 41 seconds.
And there was one visit. And the second entry is for 'how to make chloroform,' and the same spelling on the 21st of March, 2008, at 3:16 p.m. and 30 seconds. One visit."

There was also a Google search on the same computer for the term "neck breaking," Bradley said.

Judge Perry could exclude the computer searches from being introduced at trial -- if he also excludes the evidence of chloroform found in the trunk of Casey's car.
