Media Links **NO DISCUSSION**

The last lap in the marathon murder trial of South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius gets underway Thursday.

And when the race is run, Pistorius will either be a free man with a ruined reputation — or a fallen Olympian facing years behind bars.

Clues about the looming verdict could emerge during the reading, but Pistorius will only know the judgment for or against him at the end of what is likely to be a long reading that will grip the world's attention.

The judgement at his trial is likely to be well over 100 pages. The judge will go through each charge, summing up the prosecution and defence cases and analysing the evidence.

Regardless of the verdict handed down on Thursday, it is likely to be appealed by either the defence or prosecution if either disagrees with it. Even after the four months of the trial, and over a year and a half after Steenkamp was killed, the trial could last even longer.

After the sentence is delivered, Pistorius will have a chance to appeal both conviction and sentence. He can also be granted bail at the judge's discretion. However, these bail conditions will come with heavy conditions such as house arrest or reporting to a police station once a week.

Pretoria, South Africa (CNN) -- The night he killed Reeva Steenkamp, Oscar Pistorius did not commit murder, the judge at his trial said Thursday.
He did not intend to kill her, Judge Thokozile Masipa said.
But his conduct was "negligent," she said before adjourning for the day, suggesting she will find the Olympian guilty of culpable homicide.
