It was a week that began and ended with heartache.
As the families of two North County teenagers found some closure, the criminal justice system moved ahead in the prosecution of registered sex offender John Albert Gardner III and politicians began calling for investigations and new laws.
The deaths of Amber Dubois, 14, of Escondido and Chelsea King, 17, of Poway continued to draw national attention as their families planned memorial services.
Several thousand people attended a sunflower-filled memorial yesterday to celebrate the life of Chelsea, who disappeared Feb. 25 while running in Rancho Bernardo Community Park. Her body was found five days later. Gardner, 30, of Lake Elsinore has pleaded not guilty to murder and rape.
Amber’s family began planning a similar service after police announced last Sunday that her remains had been found the day before. Amber disappeared 13 months ago while walking to Escondido High School. Escondido police have said Gardner is a focus of the investigation.
*Note: Timeline of the news breaks, how it unfolded in both Amber & Chelsea's cases!
